Flu shots - anyone get them?
moped wrote: They are starting to give them this month and because Jack is 16 months our family is free - anyone have any thoughts of offer?
CantWait replied: No thoughts except to say it can't hurt. We got them last year cause we were also free because of Anthony's age.
The Family centre on base is providing a free flu shot clinic this year, so we're going to get them again for sure.
Sarah&Mackenzie replied: I have never gotten one. But I am sure the doctor will give Mackenzie one since she had Influenza B and was in the hospital for 2 days this past January. I have no idea how she got it, because neither I or DH got the flu.
gr33n3y3z replied: My family doesnt get them bc it isnt nessary But I'm also allergic to eggs and ppl. that have egg allergies cant get it
~Roo'sMama~ replied: We won't be getting them even though Dh's work is giving them out free to employee's and their families. I've gotten them a few times and it never made a difference so I figure why bother. I have always gotten the flu a few times a year, so if the shot kept me from getting sick I might get it but it has never helped! And I just read this month in a parenting magazine that even though regular vaccines don't have mercury in them anymore, the flu shot still does. I don't know if this is true or not but again why bother.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I got mine on Monday. They are free to hospital employees and with Logan and his heart condition, I sure as heck don't want to bring it home to him.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I'd be getting one too in your case. Can Logan get one too or is he not able to get vaccines because of the heart condition?
I hope the flu stays out of your house this winter!!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: No flu shots for our family. For adults, you typically get it anyway. And I completely agree with what's said above...I wouldn't take that risk. I know some people may argue and say, well why would you take the risk of having a child with the flu, but I'm still not going to do it.
This is a very personal decision that I don't talk about with many moms because some get mad about it. But I'm being honest. I also space a lot of my vaccines out, because even if peds claim that all vaccines are thermerosal free, I'm still way too nervous. My ped completely supports me on this.
Kaitlin'smom replied: nope dont get them. I have not had the flu in I dunno since I was a kid, if I get sick its with an uppper respitory infection. So I dont bother. Also just cause you get the shot does not mean you cant carry it or still get sick with the flu
ammommy replied: I get them and so will the kids. Alec got his 2 years ago with no reaction. Unfortunately, last year, with the shortages, the kids were unable to get their shots. Megan came down with the flu (thankfully a mild case) and it was very scary. We will be getting the vaccines this year.
ediep replied: Jason got the flu shot last week and he has to go back to the doc next month to get another. I had the flu last year and and I was completely knocked out for 4 days. I mean 103 fever, aches, coughing, ..the works! I was so miserable I just cried and cried....and I definately don't want Jason getting that this year, especially with him being in school now and picking up every germ out there.
The flu shot is not thermosol free, unfortunately, but Jasons ped explained it like this.....there is more mercury in a serving of fish and you wouldn't be worried about giving that to him, right? I though about it and I agreed with him, so we went for it
DansMom replied: I've always been against them but am considering it this year for the first time for me and DH. Daniel can't have the shot because he's egg-allergic, but since his reactive airways are induced by respiratory virus, I'm doubly afraid for him to get the flu this year. If I can minimize his exposure, hopefully we'll dodge the bullet. I'm still trying to decide.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Nope, nope, and nope.
I will leave it at that.... because my kids haven't ever had any other vaccines than the ones given at 3 and 6 months, and the ones at 12 months for Zach.
And it's not because I'm cheap - cuz they're free here in Canada....
Anyhoo...
mom21kid2dogs replied: IIRC correctly, doesn't Jack have some upper respiratory issues? If so, I wouldn't hestitate to get them for him. When Olivia was in what was considered the "high risk group" (under a year) I got them as opposed to her. She was not in day care so her exposure risk was lower than kids who are. I used to get them when I worked because I had such a high exposure to kids and families. I had a reaction (hives) once and the flu once. Give me the hives ANY DAY!!! Just be aware that it won't protect him from all strains of the flu.
coasterqueen replied: So far I'm totally against them. They are not for our family and there are just a large number of reasons why I wouldn't subject us to them.
A&A'smommy replied: Well I was going to get one this year but i haven't thought about getting one for Alyssa... Jeremiah is required to one because he works inside the schools I don't have to because I work for 21century I don't think I'm going to get one now..
TeagansMom609 replied: Yes, Shawn, Teagan and I will definitly get the flu shot. It doesnt hurt to have. ESPECIALLY since Teagan goes to daycare. It makes me feel safer to have Teagan get the shot, then to not get the shot and have her chances be higher and getting the flu and possibly dying from it. Even if it only makes a 1% difference I think its worth it. The flu is a horrible, horrible thing and I will take any measure to lessen her chances of getting it.
MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Logan can get one, but he isn't supposed to have any vaccines within 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after surgery, so we'll have to wait until the end of November and hope they still have vaccine left.
