Flu shots - Who's doing them?

Our Lil' Family replied: Well because DH is in the Healthcare industry he has to get one and I will get one for Thomas. I won't be getting one though, only did the winter I was pregnant.

boyohboyohboy replied: I usually got them for myself, and last yr did caleb due to his asthma, but with all the research I have been doing, it appears that the flu shots are one of the few shots that DO contain mercury.
so we wont be doing those again.

jcc64 replied: yes they do still contain mercury (at least the ones in my ped's office) , and no, we won't be getting them. Don't really believe they're all that effective, tbh.

FluMist, the nasal spray form of the flu vaccine, has been used as an alternative to getting an injected flu shot for many years for ages 5 years through 50 years. This week, FluMist was just approved for use down to age 2 years.

Does the nasal spray have any advantages over the shot, besides being pain-free? It has been shown to be more than 50% effective than the flu shot. However, the nasal spray also has a slightly higher rate of flu-like side effects.

A major advantage of the nasal spray is that it is mercury free. Many brands of the flu shot still contain mercury. The single-dose vials of the Fluzone brand of the flu shot are the only flu shots that are completely mercury free.

MommyToAshley replied: I'd be sure to ask your ped and check the container about the mercury, as I just came from the Ped's office (to test Ashley's hearing) and the flu shot that they offer DOES NOT have mercury in it. The ped said this is supposed to be a bad year for influenza, they predict a strain that has commonly led to pneumonia.

lovemy2 replied: Yep we are getting them - DH always gets one - he is a sheriff in the jail - lots of nasty there - Olivia has always gotten them - my Ped gives the no mercury ones - have checked and seen the bottles EVERY year just like I with all the other vax and sinced Olivia is in school and bringing home nasty - Dylan will get one too - I probably should but other than the two winters I was preg I haven't ever gotten one.........

mom21kid2dogs replied: I'm getting one this year since I see 700+ kids a week at school now. There's already been several kids hospitalized this school year already for pnemonia but I think that's a seperate shot. O never has had one and I'm not planning on getting her one.

PrairieMom replied: Its gonna be a fight with my DH, but I am leaning towards no. I never get them, even tho I work in the hospital on Peds. I never get the flu. I had gotten them for my son in the past, but i think I will avoid it this year.

Same here, I've never gotten it myself and neither has Hanna, Aubrey will not get it either, I thin it's an unnecessary vaccination.

redchief replied: Not to add fuel to debate but I heard on the news that the medical community is strongly recommending that teen juveniles especially, and to a slightly lesser extent, younger kids be vaccinated against influenza this year due not so much to the danger of the flu, but because of MRSA. Doctors state that MRSA is extremely difficult to treat while a child has the flu, and that deaths attributed to MRSA last year occurred in children who had the flu.

Boo&BugsMom replied: No flu shots here. I don't find them all very necessary and I don't think they work all that great. The one and only time I did get one, I got the flu anyways. No flu any other time.

MoonMama replied: This one was a HARD one for me. I haven't had one in years. The 2 yrs I did get them like Jennie I got the flu anyway. DH has NEVER had one and has NEVER had the flu. On the other hand a good friend I grew up with, her 14 month old son didn't get one because she was over in Germany where her DH was stationed. Not sure if they don't do them there or what. Anyhow she came home to visit because her DH was in Iraq and she was lonely. Her son got the flu and passed away from it. This was a couple years ago but it was hard and it was a BIG back and forth thing for me. DH of course leaves it all up to me. In the end yes he is getting a flu shot. He had his first when he went for his 12 month shots, and he gets his 2nd Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving, because they have to be 4 weeks apart and didn't think about this....oh joy ).
