Flu shots?

lisar wrote: I was curious on who all gets flu shots for themsleves and thier kids? Both of my kids got flu shots, but I didnt get one. I was wondering if I should. Lexi goes back today to get her booster for her flu shot. It was her first one ever. Raygen had one last year. I was just curious on some opinions on it. Thanks.

Calimama replied: I didnt get one. But my daughter isnt school age so she's a little bit less likely to get it.

Jamison'smama replied: I got the flu mist this year. Jamison can't get the shot d/t an egg allergy. Jack is scheduled to get one today....I am still debating. The only reason we do it is because my kids are asthmatic and when they get a cold or flu it compromises them quite a bit and ER trips are common so anything to avoid an ER trip or oral steroids!

holley79 replied: I am waiting till Annika is better then I will probably go get her one. I had been putting it off because I just couldn't make up my mind.

MyLuvBugs replied: None of us get the flu shots. Not even the kids.

3_call_me_mama replied: None of us get them. Vitamin C and Hand washing like crazy is a great preventitive measure that works well for us. KNOCK ON WOOD but non of us has had the Flu in the 5 years since I have been with DH. And that is including me owning and running a daycare center!

3xsthefun replied: No, we don't get them. The fire department offered for the members and their family have them done for free. But I just told Rob, I didn't really want one, and besides not really sure you can when you are pregnant anyways?

redchief replied: Just me this year. The kids are old enough to decide for themselves, and they nor Lisa wanted the shot. I got it because we work with a lot of immune compromised elderly folks and many are unable to get to the flu shot clinics. I would feel awful if a bug I had made a patient sick.

CantWait replied: Flu shots here still haven't even come in. I don't know what the point of getting them now is anyway even if they do.

I try to get the kids and mine but the cost is rediculous.

redchief replied:
Marie, the point is that if you haven't gotten the flu yet, getting the shot could prevent it or at least reduce your symptoms. I'm not sure about Ca., but flu hasn't reached high proportions anywhere around us yet.

moped replied: Yes - just got them last night
I say if one person is getting it then everyone should - sort of defeats the purpose IMO

redchief replied:
In practice, I agree. My employment makes me more dangerous to others if I'm contagious which is the only reason I got the shot. Lisa is allergic to eggs, so the only immunization she can receive is live virus, which is quite a bit more risky health-wise, so I don't blame her for declining. The children just don't like needles.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: No no no no and no. (5 no's for 5 people... lol)

moped replied:
I totally understand Ed.........

C&K*s Mommie replied: I have never rec'd one, not have the girls or my DH. But depending on where I end up working (in a medical office through my externship and employment) I may get one next season, just to be safe.

Similiar to "3 call me momma" {fka cam&katsmom}, we load up on the Vitamin C and natural prevention. So far so good, I have not had the flu in a long time.

DansMom replied: George and I got the shot, Daniel did not (egg allergy). I work in an office where everyone comes in sick and works---this year and last, we were offered free flu shots at the office and I decided to get one. Daniel has asthma with chest colds too, so like others in this situation I want to minimize his exposure, especially since he can't get the shot himself.

(We do immuno-support supplements too, and I think it helps because he's much healthier this season than last.)

I'm very conflicted about vaccines in general---for instance, I do wonder if the vaccines Daniel received actually caused his immune system issues. I'll never know.

coasterqueen replied: Nope, we (all 4 of us) won't be getting them and never have.

lisar replied:
Rocky,
Just out of curiosity why? I havent never heard anything bad about them so you have me wondering. All the Dr's reccomend for Raygen to get one because she was 6 weeks early. And Lexi needs one because she has a weaker immune system than most kids her age. When she was younger we were in and out of the hospital because she was always sick. They always put her in the hospital to give her a really strong antibiotic thru an IV and to keep her from getting dehydrated. I was just curious on why some people are against them. I know everyone has thier choice on them I was just wondering.

ediep replied: I got mine at my last OB visit, I was till preg with Emma. Jason got his at is 4 year well vivit

1lilpeanut2love replied: My DD got one last year and this year. I think the benefits out way the risks. I don't want to take any chances. Just my honest opinion! smile.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
I'm not "against" them, they're just not for us... I've gotten them in the past, and I've bene sicker WITH it than WITHOUT it. So I don't bother.

And we take colloidal silver. Not to get into it with anyone... but I'm a firm believer in herbal and holistic medecinal practices, they seem to work for us, and are conjunctive mostly with my Native American ancestry. tongue.gif

If I had to get them for some reason, I would. happy.gif

jem0622 replied: The girls have to get a flu shot because they were born early. Initially, we all had to get a shot. Now it is up to us. I got one at work. My eldest DS got one at school. My youngest DS got it during his 4 yr checkup. The girls will get theirs during their 2 yr checkup. DH hasn't gotten it.

I never grew up getting them and don't really feel they are helpful unless you are at risk (elderly, frequently ill, infant).

lisar replied:
Thanks Rocky. I was really just wondering. I see why. The herbal things. Some of them I use. I dont know alot of them. I have tried them before some do work. But like I said I dont know many and I dont know much about them. Thanks for letting me know though.

paradisemommy replied: my last visit to the doc i had to get a tetanus shot so i figured i'd go ahead and get the flu shot too - being in the military the past 6 years, we HAD to have them - i've never had any bad reaction and it seems the only time i got really sick is about a year ago when they had the shortage and we weren't required to get them cause priority was given to the guys going overseas - by the time they were available, i was just about due to have skyler and passed on it..

Nina J replied: We all get our flu shots. I get my pneumonia shot every year too.

mom21kid2dogs replied: Nope, we haven't. No one here is in any risk group, luckily!

jcc64 replied: My dh is severely asthmatic, and he refuses to get one. He thinks it's a scam. I'm not quite as paranoid or suspicious as my dh, but I'm not sure how effective it really is. It's always just a best guess as to which virus is going to be THE virus in any given year. I'll take my chances.

DansMom replied: For anyone interested in the herbal approach to immune support, the significant ingredient in what we take is aloe vera (a dried version of the gel). It's been known to help with all kinds of immune disorders, even Crohn's disease. After a few months of taking the supplements (we take Ambrotose made by Mannatech), we've had very mild versions of viruses or none at all. Daniel had a sinus cold that moved into his chest, and he needed albuterol only for one day---and I wasn't sure he really needed it. There were only three days that I gave him Claritin for seasonal reactions, all of those involving heavy leaf-raking or leaf-pick up days. The difference between this year and last is so striking that I'm becoming a believer in the immune support approach to treating disease (rather than symptom relief/suppression).

Rocky, I'm going to google colloidal silver---never heard of it!
