Flu shot? - Who qualifies? Are you getting one?

I was going to call about them next week...do you know who's the first in line to get them? My DH said kids under 8.....he wasn't sure though.

Thanks smile.gif

mckayleesmom replied: Here on post...its just infants right now...Russell gets his later this month.

six_kids_at_28 replied: Ok. I'll call the doctor's next week and see when kids under 6 can get it...

moped replied: Here it is children between 6-23 months and their families and seniors.....................yesterday was the first day here and we are going today

mommy2owen replied: Alyssa's preschool did the flu-mist on Tuesday. She is the only one so far for us! Owen gets his shot next Thursday, if the doctor ever calls back.

six_kids_at_28 replied: biggrin.gif YESSS!!! We have 3 kids under 23 months...does that mean all my other kids/me/dh/ SIL all get them as well?

jcc64 replied: Usually, if there's a shortage- it's people with chronic conditions (asthma, etc) or compromised immune systems first. Then a targeted age group, and I can't remember what it is- younger than 2 and older than 65 or something like that. After that, anyone can get them. I haven't heard anything about a shortage this year. If you want one, you can probably get one.
I can't recall the flu shot being routine for healthy people until recently. The suspicious part of me believes they aren't as essential as the drug companies would like us to believe. The only person who gets a flu shot in my family is my ds, who has asthma. As crazy as this sounds, I kind of want my otherwise healthy kids to get sick occasionally so they can strengthen their immune systems.

six_kids_at_28 replied:
Not crazy at all. My mom brought up her kids like that..and I'm fine tongue.gif

DansMom replied: Daniel's egg-allergic, so shouldn't get the shot for that reason, but he also has reactive airways with respiratory viruses, so I'm pretty worried. In past years I haven't been for it, but this new development changes things, and I debated getting the shot myself as a protective measure, as it was offered here at work.

kimberley replied: never have. nor have my kids. nearly everyone i know has gotten the flu after the shot rolleyes.gif

six_kids_at_28 replied:
hug.gif Aww I hope it all works out. What does your doctor say?

Debra replied: It is mandatory for DH to get one (he's military). And the kids & I also get them. My daughter & I are asthmatics & it has always been recommended for us to get them. My son will also receive the shot since he is in public school & that is one of the criteria here.

punkeemunkee'smom replied:

ITA!!! Not crazy at all!

My2Beauties replied: I never get one and I don't plan on getting one for Hanna, everyone I know that gets one gets sick afterwards and I don't think they're so fullproof! rolleyes.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
Was he contraindicated for everything? Tay is so that is why I wonder. As far as the respritory distress I know this sounds crazy but coffee is a natural airway anti-inflamatory...you don't add milk but can add sugar to make it palatable for them. It really does help. Just in case you need it this winter-I hope you do not!

redchief replied: I'm personally not real crazy about the flu vaccine unless you're very young, respiratory compromised or elderly. Recent studies question the effectiveness of the shot anyway (and considering each year's vaccine is nothing but an educated guess anyway, that's understandable). I'm actually considered high risk (working in emergency medicine) and, according to the CDC, should get flu shots. I never have, and I've only taken one sick day in 10 years working on an ambulance. But that's just me... I hate needles. LOL

~KARA~ replied:

Plus with me being egg allergic. And as of right now I dont have kids between the age of 6-23 mo so my kids dont qualify yet. Youngest wont untill February.

coasterqueen replied:
same here. wink.gif DH was even suggested to get one before going to Louisiana but he chose not to. His doctor thought he was nuts. tongue.gif My understanding is they gave them to all volunteers that went down south.

elvisfan replied: Well, being that I have a newborn my family will be getting them this year. My oldest three next week and dh and I after that. I guess we've been lucky that we've never gotten the flu after having the shot! I hope it stays that way.

MyLuvBugs replied: I never get one. I don't believe in them. I have gotten them in the past, and both times, I ended a getting the full on flu. Yet when I don't get the shots, I never get the flu. Go figure!! I might get one for Lorelei though. Although she seems to have a better immune system than I do. smile.gif
