FDA approved cloned meat this week - How do you feel about it?

Celestrina wrote: This week the FDA approved the sale of cloned meat and they don't even have to label it. What are your feelings about it? Would you eat it? Do you think it should at least have to be labeled?

5littleladies replied: The very idea of cloned meat creeps me out. I think it should absolutely have to be labeled. As soon as we can afford it we are switching to locally raised meat!

punkeemunkee'smom replied: It freaks me out...I will be sticking with the local meat market. I don't think anyone around here is cloning ol' Bess before she goes to slaughter laugh.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
I COMPLETELY agree!!!!

jcc64 replied: Totally freaks me out. What is the matter with us??
We're not supposed to engage in any cloning for scientific research and/or possible medical advancements, but it's ok to eat it?
This country's whacked, I swear.

Kaitlin'smom replied: I will pass

stella6979 replied: I think EVERYTHING that we put in our bodies should be labeled as it is OUR choice what we want to put in them. mad.gif As for the cloned meat....NO WAY JOSE!!!

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I can tell you that there is a HUGE faction of beef producers who DO want MUCH stricter labeling on meat! They want Point of Origin labels for all beef, that would include cloned or lab beef....It is not easy but I know that the beef industry is working to legislate much tougher labeling laws....

boyohboyohboy replied: so how will we know that meat markets are not serving cloned meat?

punkeemunkee'smom replied:
Most of the time your local meat market is going to slaughter their own meat and most of the time it will be from local producers. They don't get a truck load of already butchered meat and just re-package it like the big chains do.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Local meat markets? Or grocery stores?

Our local meat markets raise their own meat and slaughter it themselves, or they get it from a local farm, exclusively. That way you know where it's coming from. I'm sure any meat market you walk into will tell you exactly where they are getting their meat.

Wal-Mart and larger chain grocery stores, not so much. Fast food restaurants...no! Those are the places where you will be finding cloned meat. Unless you buy organic from these places.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: Ok I just called Bill and asked him emlaugh.gif He said it is not the cloned animal we would be eating...It takes too much $$$$ to clone them. It would be their offspring. In other words there will be a Bull that has perfect genetic markings to produce a good steak and they will AI a herd of cows with his semen to produce what should be a genetically superior steak on the hoof laugh.gif It really is not terribly different from what is already done in choice breeding programs...They already take the best of the best and breed those 2 to birth a superior calf. Our friends actually have some mommas right now that are having bucking bull babies that aren't theirs. They were implanted with embryos but the parents of these calves were hand picked because of previous performance...Genectics is HUGE in the cattle industry and as science advances their ablities to produce bigger and better-this will be the tip of the ice-burg.

Calimama replied: No way. blink.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: Like I said in the other post
They can eat it I dont trust the FDA

BAC'sMom replied: I am not a fan it TOTALLY freaks me out!

I will keep on buying from our local meat market. We know the owner and know exactly where the meat is coming from.

Maddie&EthansMom replied:
Well, Bill would certainly know..since he's the beef farmer and all. wink.gif rolling_smile.gif

So are they going to clone Kobe just so people will buy it b/c they think they are getting "the best"? Eeeeek!!!

I'll stick with the meat market...

MommyToAshley replied: That's interesting info ... thanks for the insight in the biz.

I posted my thoughts on cloned beef in this thread. http://forums.parentingclub.com/index.php?...topic=70453&hl=

The main gripe I have is with labeling the product.

MommyToAshley replied:
What can we do to voice our opinions on stricter labeling on meat? Is there legislation that is trying to be passed? Would writing our congress person make a difference?

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: The thought of it makes me shiver. noooooo.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied:

rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif You will have to call for the word I used when I saw that comment! rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif

jcc64 replied: I think I may have shared my experience on this board before about the whole bovine growth hormone and milk thing. Many years ago I was listening to a story on NPR about a very similar situation where Monsanto, the chemical company responsible for producing BGH and the dairy lobby successfullly prevented mandatory labelling of dairy products containing BGH, despite its well established side effects and health risks, especially with regard to children. I was aghast that our elected leaders could and would put the interests of corporate profits ahead of the health of our children. It was, as Oprah calls it, a major "a-ha" moment for me. Since then, I trust no government agency to reflect or protect the interests of my family, and realize I am the only thing standing in between my kids and our over-chemicalized, often toxic food supply.
I'm all for some sort of collective action. Count me in, Dee Dee.

Mommy2BAK replied: puke.gif (thats how I feel, although all meat grosses me out)
