Exposure to a form of shingles - while pregnant - question?
moped wrote: So, I am asking because our receptionist just said she has a viral thing that is like a bunch of blisters on her leg and the doc said it was from the same family as shingles, I seem to think tht pregnant women should steer clear of any form of shingles but I don't remember.......
All I could find was it was the same as Chicken pox and if you have already had it your body has the antibodies.
Anyone know anything about shingles or a form of?
A&A'smommy replied: Its viral
you should call your ob and let them know you have been exposed
At our class they told us to watch out being exposed to viruses, and that if we do get exposed to call call them and let them know.
redchief replied: Yep, same virus family as chicken pox (herpes zoster). You must have had chicken pox to develop shingles, but shingles isn't contagious to people who've had chicken pox, if that makes any sense at all.
moped replied: So I should be ok then?
A&A'smommy replied: did they say what "form" of shingles it was?
hoosier momma replied: My MIL had shingles while I was pregnant and my OB told me I was fine to be around her.
redchief replied: You should be OK.
moped replied: Well no she really isn't the brightest bulb iin the socket, so no she just said a form of shingles.......
A&A'smommy replied: oh well I agree you will be fine
moped replied: Ok good - thanks guys.........

Since you've had CP you're not at too much of a risk. Just don't come in contact with the infected area.
lovemy2 replied: You should be fine - especially if you had chicken pox - but it is one of those wierd things like someone said - you have to have had CP to get shingles but if you have had CP you are less likely to "catch" it - my SIL had it in her first trimester with my nephew and other than not being able to take any heavy duty meds to help with the pain - she was really ok - not fun though - just stay away from her....it is usually triggered by stress, etc.....
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh but I would stay away from her anyway Jen, if you can. Don't pick up her phone or use her stuff. It still scares me regardless if you can't get it, kwim? But at least your safe to be in her presence. Is she taking time off so that it clears up? I think she should, especially with a pregnant woman in the office.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: The virus and therefore the anibodoes remain in your body after you have the chicken pox,BUT the immunity can wear off. My Grandmother just got shingles after a long running viral infection. Her Oncoligist (she had breast cancer 5 years ago) said she probably got them because her immune system was down and the virus was able to flare up so to speak. ITA with Rae-stay away from her in any way possible!
redchief replied: The very idea makes me shudder... I've BTDT and ~~~ shudder~~~... Well there I go.
Brias3 replied: I've had shingles a few times before, all triggered by when I was going through my period of intense and frequent migraines. I always was prescribed topical creams for them. Yes, it is the same virus as chickenpox, however they are only contagious to people who have not had the pox. If you haven't had the pox, then you could get the POX from contact with shingles, however you won't develop SHINGLES from shingles, KWIM? If that makes any sense whatsoever.
All I know is that many of the lesions I had "scabbed" over quickly, so I don't think there was as much danger of exposure once that occured (as per my doctor's info). I'd stay away just in case- don't want to risk it.
