Dust? - Need some ideas, please

MommyToAshley wrote: How often do you dust?

The dust in our house drives me nuts. I can dust and then the very next day, I need to dust again. Is that normal-- do you need to dust every day?

We use the higher end furnace filters that are supposed to pick all that stuff up and we also use air purifiers/cleaners in all the rooms. I just bought a different brand air cleaner hoping that would help, but it hasn't. (I think we've tried jsut about every brand air cleaner there is!) The only thing I can think of is that they are building new homes a couple of streets over from us... but would that dust really carry this far and get into our homes?

I'm open for suggestion.... help, I hate dust!

lisar replied: I dust my house about every 3 or 4 days. As for how to keep the dust down. I havent figured that out for myself yet.

amynicole21 replied: Have you checked the seals around your windows and doors for leaks? It's the only thing I can think of right now...

Kaitlin'smom replied: well the first question not as often as I should (mostyl due to my allergies)

and yes the construction can do that, our grandparents had a awful time with the dust when they built houses a few streets over.

what helps....for me the swiffers seem to keep it a way longer, espically if i use that first then follow up with something like pledge, but I dont get to do that often

MommyToAshley replied:
Good point...

We do need new windows. happy.gif We are at that point where we'd like to sell our house in a few years and not sure we want to make that investment. But, I think we are going to have to do it in the spring.

amynicole21 replied: You could always just get some of that silicone sealant and just do a temporary fix...

luvmykids replied: I have to dust everyday but do use a feather duster and only do "real" dusting once a week. The feather duster really does a good job if you get a higher end ostrich feather one...it does attract the dust until you shake it out, doesn't just spread it around.

Boo&BugsMom replied: I dust once a week, but there are items in our house that collect more dust that I dust off more often. That, or I just notice it on certain things more, like our entertainment center. I wipe that off about 3 times a week. I'd like to try those Swiffer dusters!

moped replied: If they are building on your street - forget it until they are done trust me!!!!!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Totally agree. Arg! A couple years ago they were redoing our road and it was aweful! It was also in the summer time and I could barely keep the windows open without having to dust everything a couple times a day. It was terrible.

Calimama replied: I dust with the Swiffer duster every other day. If we didn't have dark furniture I wouldn't have to. dry.gif

stella6979 replied: I usually dust once or twice a week, however dusting is my least favorite chore so sometimes I might let it go longer than I should.

redchief replied: If you simply let the dust build up, after a few weeks you can no longer tell whether the coating is new dust or old. Of course I'll get a dirty look from Lisa for this. rolling_smile.gif

I wish I had an easy answer for you. Here are some other tips (besides the windows):

Do you have ANY bare concrete in the house?.. If you do, this always gives up dust. You should coat it (not to mention that concrete dust is harmful to your respiratory system).

Is your clothes dryer vented to the outside? If not, clothes dryers will just toss dust right back into your home. Along the same lines, if you can hang laundry to dry outside, this will cut down on dust considerably.

Do you have any bare walls in the house (unpainted)? Unpainted surfaces, especially plastered and Perfa-taped, will give up lots of dust.

Most of the dust we clean comes from living every day. Cottons tend to give up more dust than synthetics because cotton fibers are short and pull away from the threads easily. People and pets also make a lot of dust in the forms of dead skin (I know, yuck, but it is what it is) and dander.

The only other real suggestion I have is to make sure you have a good vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter system. Otherwise, there's always suggestion #1.

Cece00 replied: Honestly, I probably only dust every 2 weeks sleep.gif

But the dust just isnt that bad here. When I tried dusting every week, there just wasnt much to dust. At our old house, I used to have to dust ALL THE TIME.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Yes, it's probably from the construction that you're getting more dust than usual. I dust about once a week. My house here in Colorado Springs doesn't get as dusty as my house did in Denver. I'm thinking it's because we have carpet (which catches the dust), where the old house had hardwoods. Plus, we have more lawn here, so less dirt outside to kick around and come inside. We don't have any air purifiers or anything like that in the house. I have no idea what type of vents we have. happy.gif Do you guys have pets? I know that we had more dust and dog hair floating around when we had Owen. But it's better now. We also take off our shoes before coming in the house, that has helped some.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Oh, thank God. I thought I was the only one.

Our Lil' Family replied:
So is this why my cherry wood furniture looks grey now? huh...

wink.gif

Nina J replied: I would say it's because of the construction.

We have a animal feed place (I can;t think of the proper name blush.gif ) a few blocks away, and the dust is terrible, especially with the wind. 100 giant silo's full of cattle feed + wind = dust, dust, dust.
