Does this sound like an odd reason - to open school late?

Celestrina wrote: This morning DS's school opened two hours late because of extreme cold. huh.gif Granted, it was much colder this morning that usual. Normally it is around 35°F (1.6°C) and it was around 10°F (-12.2°C) this morning. It is an elementary school so no kids will be walking to school. For some reason my number was not on the call list (the school sends out an automated phone call regarding things like this), so we had no clue it was opening late. I drive him in, and no one is there. So we go home and I check the website and that's how I found out.

HuskerMom replied: Yeah I've heard of schools closing because of extreme cold. I don't remember schools closing because of that when I was a kid though. I've noticed (here at least) that schools close more now due to weather than when I was little. dunno.gif Also I've noticed that even when the weather is in the teens there are elementary school kids walking home, hopefully not far.

MommyToAshley replied: They closed school here today, but it was -14 (-30F windchill) at 6am when they called it closed. I kind of understand as that is getting pretty dangerous for any kids that might have to wait for the bus or walk to school. Yesterday, it was only 0 and they had a two hour delay. I've noticed a lot of parents don't dress their kids for the cold, so it's probably a good thing that they err on the side of caution.

5littleladies replied: We had schools closed almost state-wide yesterday because of the cold, but it was anywhere from -25 to -40F. blink.gif We would never close for 10 degree weather-that would seem like a heatwave about now. tongue.gif

lovemy2 replied: Not in Upstate NY - its wierd if they DON"T open school late or close school for that very reason laugh.gif laugh.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Our local schools were all delayed Thursday night because temps were forecasted to be -10 to -20 Fri. morning.

Mommy2Isabella replied: We RARELY have delays. Our schools flat out close if it snows though. During August we sometimes have hurricane conditions and they will let out early or go in late...but it is rare!

danahas4monkeys replied: We had a a couple days this week like that they missed 2 days for low temps.

moped replied: Well first of all -12C would be a nice winter day and kids would walk here laugh.gif , so it seems odd to me, now if it were -40c (which I have experienced) along with snow etc, that would a snow/cold day and schools would close.......Canadian are funny eh? rolleyes.gif

Now in the SMALL town I grew up in, if it was -40 the bus kids wouldn't have school but the kids that lived in town and walked would, so I had to go still!

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Uh, yeah! I'd be thrilled with that weather! We'd be playing outside!!!! rolling_smile.gif rolling_smile.gif

jcc64 replied: We have delays constantly, mainly b/c the road crews need time to clear the mountain roads before the buses can pass safely. With the cold, many kids have to walk a decent distance to their designated pick up locations, in the dark, and could be out there for quite a long time if the buses are late b/c the roads are slick. My boys get on the bus at 6:45am--and believe me, it's a lot colder then than it is at 8:30am when my younger dd gets picked up for the elementary school. Everyone in my district takes the bus b/c it's so spread out- it covers 100 square miles.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: blink.gif Not here! Major cities would shut down in weather like that! rolling_smile.gif

moped replied:
Super nice day!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
I have no idea what that would even be in F degrees. laugh.gif When we visited Canada everything was in celsius and I had no idea how to convert it since we always use the Ferenheit system here. tongue.gif

Our schools closed last Thursday and Friday. With windchill it was -35F Thurs. and Fri. They were reporting cases of frost bite in under 10 minutes. blink.gif Growing up we NEVER closed school because it was too cold. However, I guess we have one of the coldest winters reported in the last 20 years. rolleyes.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Yeah, the US is one of the last few countries who haven't upgraded to Celcius.

FYI :

-12 C is about 10 degrees, Fahrenheit.

-35F is about the same in Celcius, about -38C - aka - Freakin Freezin!
