Does Your Child Have a Lovey?

Maddie has her blankie. It is this pink blanket with satin trim. It is very soft (when it is clean). It is just a blanket that we happened to get home with on a cold night when we were leaving my parent's house. She was only about 5 mos old at the time. It was originally left at my grandmother's house by one of the kids she kept (many moons ago). I don't know how my mom ended up with it. Anyway, I just kept it in Maddie's blanket drawer. When we moved here DH was putting her to bed and saw the blanket and wrapped her up in it. He put that satin next to her face and in her hand. (She was 10 mos old) Ever since then she hasn't been without it. He said he had one just like it when he was a baby. (Every now and then I will catch him cuddling with her blankie) LOL!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I honestly tried to steer away from that kind of thing.... too much conflict should it ever be forgotten, broken, ripped...etc... my DH's niece and nephew each have a blankie..and holy geez - if you make the mistake of moving it from the pile in the middle of the floor to folding it to put on the couch - they scream and scream and scream.
Not for me.
So.... he has comfort things, but it's more like a particular song (which we have a copy of on cd and on tape in his bag, it goes everywhere we do. We have a copy of said cd and tape in our car, and in our house, and at the sitters. So it's always with him in one way or the other.)
He also likes to have a sippy cup on hand or within reach at all times. That's our fault though... lol so even when he's older, we'll be dragging around a water bottle with the suck spout thing... and he can keep that with him always. It's not something that he'll be embarassed about later on anyways - could you see a 5 or 6 year old in school with a blankie?! lol Makes me think of thaty character on Charlie Brown. and besides, it's a good thing to always carry a water bottle.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not knocking the use of a lovey... I never had one, and I don't want the hassle/worry that comes with the responsibility of always making sure that extra item is always around the child.
aspenblue1 replied: Isabella favorite thing is her Care Bear she takes it everywhere. She just got it recently.
MommyToAshley replied: I am surprised that Ashley doesn't have a comfort item. Maybe because she BF, I have been her comfort item. LOL But, she's cut way back on BF and she still doesn't have one. She never used a paci or sucked her thumb either. It's not that I discouraged it, it's just that she never wanted one.
mummy2girls replied: Jenna has a blanket she calls "Baba" .its a very soft winnie the pooh blanket. My mom got it for her for her first christmas (6 weeks old). She didnt really get an attachment to it until she reached 4 months when she started daycare. She has to have it to sleep at night and for naps. Plus if she is sad or drinking her bottle she needs to hold it. I can see her dragging that thing for years..LOL
juliajaj replied: Olivia has her blankie. My sister-in-law crocheted it for her & gave it to her on her baptism. Is probably 4 ft. long, so it was the only blanket that she would remain swaddled in. She sleeps with it at home or when we're on a trip (she has another favorite blanket to sleep with at daycare). For the longest time, she would sleep with part of it covering her face. I was always nervous about this, but the ped. said since it was crocheted there was plenty of breathing room. She probably put it over her face as a comfort. Now she cuddles with it at night & ends up using it as a pillow. Besides Mom or Dad, it's the next thing she cuddles with in the morning. I'm going to have to request that my SIL keep the pattern & make another one for us when we have another child. It means a lot knowing that SIL made Olivia lovey.
mckayleesmom replied: Not really,,,Mckaylee loves blankies, but it doesn't matter which one and she doesn't HAVE to have it. She does have a little chickie toy that she LOVES...its from old navy and when you squeeze it, it chirps. She also has a pig one, but the chickie is her favorite..She had a horse too, but she threw him out of the cart at the grocery store and we never found him.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Luckily, Maddie will leave blankie behind if we go to the store or something, but it goes on trips and she HAS to have it to sleep (so she takes it to preschool for naps). I don't have to worry about keeping up with it...she knows exactly where it is at all times.
Maddie never liked pacifiers, either. Nor did she suck her thumb. I was grateful for that. When I was little I had one of my mother's gowns that I used as a lovey. It was one of her nursing gowns and it had her scent on it. She said that when she nursed me I would rub my fingers through her gown (it was soft and silky) And when she weaned me she put it in bed with me to make it easier for me to sleep. I slept with it for the longest time.
Since Maddie was almost a year old I really thought she wouldn't grow attached to anything like that. It might have been the fact that we had just moved out of town and back in with daddy. That could have been her way of comforting herself in a new place.
kit_kats_mom replied: She didn't used to. Since she started a part time daycare away from home though, I have noticed an increasing attachment to a particular pink bunny.
Kirstenmumof3 replied: Oh yes Claudia has a blanket! It's the size of her crib. I'm not sure if it is knitted or crochet, but it is beautiful! Claudia likes it because it has tassles on the sides and she rubs them between her fingers until she falls asleep! The sad thing is a lady I used to work with, someone I absolutely did not get a long with made it for her!
chloe&tysmommy replied: Chloe has a blankie that she loves, but its not like she cries if its not around kinda thing. She likes any kind of fuzzy soft blankets but the one she sleeps with is crochet'd and she got it from our friend
coasterqueen replied: I have tried and tried to get Kylie to take a lovey instead of a binky but she won't do it. Lately, though, I've seen her hug her stuffed animals more and carry them around from time to time which she didn't do before. So maybe she's "growing" into liking a lovey Gosh knows I've bought tons of blankets and stuffed animals trying to find one she would like
Heather replied: Ali doesn't really have a lovey either. However, at night she has this over-stuffed extremely soft kitty that she hugs onto before she falls asleep. Maybe this is her lovey?
MomToJade&Jordan replied: Jade actually has two lovies that she has to have. One is a Ty duck named Puddles. It was given to her by my Popo and his wife when we were in Florida. This duck has to be in her crib or she will not go to sleep. The other one is an actual Beanie Baby. This one is named Pappa and was given to her Dad from her on Fathers Day. He's like bright orange and funny looking, but she has to hug him at night. Jade never did take a paci or sucked her thumb so I'm glad that she has found something to comfort her at night.
amynicole21 replied: Same thing for us! I have tons of blankets and stuffed things that I thought Sophia would definitely form an attachment with, but so far nothing. She does like to hold onto blankets and her babies, but she'll forget about them in a second. I guess I don't mind so much, but I would REALLY love to get her away from that paci!
paradisemommy replied: no lovey here...possibly b/c i'm still bf. he never did take a paci or suck his thumb either. he'll grab a stuffed animal every now and then - a stuffed husky dog is his favorite and give it hugs and kisses but then throw it on the ground and walk away!! we don't use blankets over here cause it's so hot and he's always been such a hot baby anyways..
ediep replied: yup, Jason has a blankie and he needs it to go to sleep. Lately, if he doesn't have it in there, he'll cry
