Do You Believe in .... - religion and science mentioned
Crystalina wrote: evolution or that man was created by God? I'm not looking for a debate, just your opinion or beliefs. My sister and I were talking about this tonight.
I believe in both and I'll explain. I believe in the bible 100% and that God created us but I do not believe that God created humans as they look now. I think we were more ape-like this is where the evolution part would come into play. Have you ever looked at old pictures? The people in them look a bit differant then they do now. They were more ape-like, I'm talking about the very first pictures (that era). Imagine what they looked like hundreds of years before they were captured by film. That's what I think anyway. I'm just sharing this because I've been told you cannot believe in evolution AND the bible. This is how I think you CAN.
luvmykids replied: I believe in Creation and thats all I'll say! Well, maybe not, the only hang up I have is that the Bible says God created man in His image, I don't imagine God as an ape! Seriously though, my personal opinion is that Biblical descriptions of people are more human like than ape like, I know there are theories that Adam and Eve weren't the first humans on the planet but based on the Bible (which I believe) they were and their offspring and their's etc etc there wasn't enough of a time lapse for them to have evolved from apes to the way they're described in the Bible. JMO.
kit_kats_mom replied: Evolution totally.
kayla's mama replied: I believe in creation. Thats all I'm saying.

luvbug00 replied: I believe in God and Evolution. both have good arguments..
MamaJAM replied: I believe that G-d created the world...and everything in/on it. I do not think that a "Day" in the Torah is a 24 hour like we know it.
I'd rather just leave it at that.
EvesMom replied: I believe God created us, and I also believe in evolution. But I do not believe that man in a result of evolution. Evolution is based on, natural selection (survival of the fittest. If this were the case, wouldn't apes , monkey, or what have you, be extinct? KWIM? It's just one of those things that science hasn't been able to prove or disprove.

MyLuvBugs replied: This topic has always perplexed me. Why can't it be both? Why do there have to be sides to this issue? Why can't it be a "higher power" created life on earth, and it took 70 million years for it to become life as we know it? Both are valid to me, and a combination of both makes perfect sense in my book.
holley79 replied: I believe in God and in the bible.
I also believe that certain things to have to evolve to be able to live in the ever changing enviroment. JMO
EvesMom replied: Very well Said! We will probably never know the answer. Yes, man and chimp have similar genomes, but so does the dolphin and domestic pig. Maybe man was once a feeble minded primate and maybe man is man and monkey is monkey. Who knows, we could be a freaky alien experiment! I wanna be an amoeba! Sorry, I'm very tired, and can't sleep. Reaching the point of delirium!
ashtonsmama replied: I've wondered sometimes, I do believe that God created us, and I also believe that He gave us some ways of adapting and changing with our environments, etc. in an evolution-like way...so I can see where you're coming from with that. But I do believe in God 100%, and in the Bible...
I do know lots of people even at my church (we go to a Presbyterian church) that believe in aspects of evolution and are also strong Christians, so I do think that it could be possible!
ilovemybaby replied: We had a long deep discussion about Creation and Evolution at our last Homegroup and I decided that you cannot believe in both together. Not fully. Scientists believe it took years for some of the processes mentioned in the bible to happen. But the bible says God made everything in six days. They just don't work together.
There is a book on Creation and Evolution written by Graham Finlay. He is a NZer and he's a scientist who teaches at Auckland University. He is a Christian as well as a Scientist and believes that you can believe in both. I don't know if they sell his books in the US...
I just don't see how they can both go together.
EvesMom replied: There is a lot of symbolize in the bible, it's not to be taken literally. God's day is not like our 24hr day.
MyLuvBugs replied: LOL I like that idea. Can I vote for aliens instead? lol
ilovemybaby replied: I have heard that argument but I believe it means 24 hours because he made day and night. If we have day (light) and night (darkness) and then it is light again then that is one day. JMO There are a lot of stories in the bible where Jesus spoke about things in a way that confused people but I don't think this is one of those cases.
EvesMom replied: Lord's day = epoch http://www.biblestudents.net/library/bkscience.htm
5littleladies replied: I believe in Creation 100%. I don't know if man has changed at all since the beginning, and I don't know how long ago it happened. I have my opinions but, frankly, it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference. My belief in God is based on the Bible, and "minor details" aren't going to change my belief.
EvesMom replied: Believe it or not, that's another one of the many theorys about our exsistance.
ilovemybaby replied: Thanks but it was not just that one thing that made up my mind.
EvesMom replied: I can respect that. I still haven't completely made my mind up.
luvmykids replied: This isn't directed at you, just made me think of something:
There are a lot of things the Bible talks about that don't make "sense" or can't be explained scientifically, it's a matter of what you believe about God and what He's capable of in the sense of the miraculous, I guess. I don't know how long "six days" really was, I just know I can believe that the same God responsible for other things that are to the mind unthinkable, unimaginable , inexplicable, in my belief, was completely capable of creating the world and the people in it.
I'm not debating any one elses beliefs or trying to convince anyone, thats just what came to mind when I read that.
huggybugboy replied: wow this one makes me think... Ive actually done research papers on this. I believe in Creation totally and whole-heartedly. I also believe that creatures can adapt to fit their environment. However, if God made man in HIS image, then man would therefore be created PERFECT, which means we would not have to change, right?
ETA... But MAYBE in that perfect design, we are created to change...
This could go on and on and on...
luvmykids replied: Were you a philosophy major? lol
huggybugboy replied: lol... not at all, although I always thought it would be interesting.
luvmykids replied: I took one philosophy class and got so confused that after the first lecture I wasn't even sure if I existed or was just a theory lol
Crystalina replied: This is like when Cain killed able (not to bring another topic in here just making a point) he was banished to another land, excuse me for not remembering the name of it right now, but it was not a land at all but he was banished to roam nonstop until he finally found a wife which happend to be his sister. The land was not a land but a figure of speach in the bible because he was sent to this 'place' which wasn't a place at all. KWIM? It's a bit confusing but I watched a show about it on Discovery and it was very interesting.
Just like God making us in his own image. Why does it have to be physical image? JMO.

Edward's Mommy replied: I believe in Creation. If evolution was how we came to be, why isn't it still happening? I believe 100% in the Bible because there is no way I desended from a monkey or ape or dog or whale or bird. I think animals are amazing creatures but nothing like Darwin suggested. Even if we did evolve from animals, again, why isn't it still happening and the animals had to come from somewhere. A pregnant woman has a genetic test done on her baby and the doctor tells her that her baby has 99.9% chance of being a still born or brain dead. She has an option to abort the pregnancy and carry on with it. She prays to the Lord to help her child be born alive and healthy. The day comes that she gives birth. Her child is now 3 years old and is as healthy as a horse. I know that pregnant mother. That pregnant mother was a friend I had in high school who was raped and her child was the result. Think about all the women who drank while they were pregnant and they gave birth to children who didn't have fetal acholoh(sp?) syndrome. When I was 7 years old, I fell 16 feet from my bedroom window on concrete. The doctor told my mom, "I didn't believe in a God before you brought this child in. If there wasn't a God, your child would not have survived this fall without dying." Not only did I NOT die, but I walked away from that without a scatch! These are call miracles made by God. Not just a coincidence.
ilovemybaby replied: That's ok. I don't believe in Evolution What I was trying to say was that I don't think the bible and Evolution can go together because it says God created everything in six days. Whereas Scientists say that is impossible.
I know I don't explain things very well.
Edward's Mommy replied: For those who don't believe or those unsure, there is a book I want you all to read. It's called Rachel's Tears. It's about a Columbine victim who was so close to God, that she knew on April 20, 1999 that she would die that day! I was a believer before, but I believe a million times more now. I'm sure you can find it at a library or a Christian library.

DansMom replied: I believe that there is sufficient evidence to support the theory of evolution. My spiritual theories and beliefs are informed by all the religions I've studied, especially Buddhism---I don't interpret any regional, historical compilation of religious writings as literally true, but I do find spiritual truths within the stories of all religions that reinforce the principles I choose to live by.
My2Beauties replied: That is a good concept. I think it's a bit of both. I don't know if I believe in the big bang theory but if God created heavens and the earth a couple thousand years ago, how do you explain the dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago
Hillbilly Housewife replied: This is where day and night = light and dark becomes sticky...lemme explain
look at the North. I mean Extreme North- like Upper Canada, and the Arctic. Their winters are compete darkness for 6 months, and their summers are complete light for 6 months.
So for day and night (light and dark) it does NOT have to be a 24 hour period.
If day = light and night = dark, then in the Yukon, for instance, there is 1 day a year by your standards, since it is constant dark for 6 months and constant light for 6 months.
What with the evolutionary process over millions of years, well, quite frankly - if in a different part of our world as we know it today, there can be that much of a difference in the light/dark cycle between different hemispheres, millions of years ago it could have been a heck of a lot different.
So your argument of 6 days being six 24 hour periods because of the light/dark, I'm sorry, sucks, because in northern canada, it would be 6 years by your standards.
It could EASILY be a confusingn subject.

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I believe in creation. I believe God created man(and later took a rib from man and created woman) and God created monkey I don't believe that we came from a monkey...I think God did that because He has a sense of humor and he knew that he was going to keep some scientists busy chasing their tales... I also believe that God created the earth in 6 days-he created the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night and He saw that it was good and He called that the first day but quite frankly I don't care if it took Him 6,000 years to do it I still believe He did it!
Crystalina replied: nice
Edward's Mommy replied: That's a beautiful explaination! I you for that!
my2monkeyboys replied: As with this question of what a "day" is to God, I think you have to take into consideration that the bible was translated from it's original language. There are times when a multi-lingual preacher I know would be studying certain texts and as he researched, he'd find that a word was maybe translated a certain way, when it was possible to have had a slightly different meaning, and that in the context of the passage would have meant something different. (KWIM? sorry if that was confusing!) So I think that with things like this we have to remember that it has been translated, and while it is the ordained word of God, there are humans involved.
