Elementary school student allowed to leave with strangerBoy's mother demanding answers
By Gene Apodaca
(4/14/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A mother wants answers after her five-year-old son was sent home with a stranger...and it turns out the child's school let it happen. The incident happened at Horn Elementary School a couple of days ago, but that mother claims that since then, the school is refusing to tell her anything about the stranger who picked her child up.

Two days after little Gaquinn Jackson was sent home with a stranger, his mother is frustrated because she's unable to get the answers she wants.

"I want to be able to talk to him and for him to explain to me where he took my son to and what went on," said Chevette Brimm, referring to the man who picked up her child from school.

Brimm got the call Tuesday. Her son was sick and needed to be picked up from school. But when she got to the school, she was told a man claiming to be a friend of a parent had already picked him up.

"She was like, 'He just left with some dude,'" recalled Brimm. "I'm like, 'Some dude? What do you mean, some dude?'"

Forty minutes later, that man would return, claiming he mistakenly went to the wrong school and picked up the wrong kid. It turns out the nurse who released him never checked his name in their files.

"I'm not going to pretend to make it OK," said Alief ISD Assistant Superintendent Paula Smith. "I am going to tell you, these people are dedicated to children's safety, to their lives."

What troubles Brimm the most is that school officials refuse to put her in contact with the stranger. All she's been able to gather from her son is that he took him to his house, played video games, and even stopped by Chuck E. Cheese.

Since the incident, school officials have apologized for the mistake, but for Brimm though, that's not good enough.

"An apology is not acceptable," said Brimm. "It's not going to help me at all."

Since the incident happened, the district has tightened its policies about releasing children. But Brimm wants more. She's now considering legal action, demanding both the principal and the nurse to be fired.

Not the first time

Back in March, we told you how a seven-year-old was able to wander away from Hicks Elementary School in Alief ISD. Andrea Gonzalez wandered out the back door and into the street. She was found by a school volunteer about 20 minutes later. Alief ISD apologized to the student's family for the incident.

growl.gif What in the world is wrong with that school??? wacko.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: OH
MY
GOSH!!!!! ohmy.gif

I would be LIVID!!!!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif Something serious needs to happen to those people at the school and the man who kidnapped that poor little boy! growl.gif

MyLuvBugs replied:
ITA!!!!

What if that child had not been returned, or found dead?!?!?! growl.gif OMG! mad.gif I would totally go ballistic on those people.

JP&KJMOM replied: I missed the news Abbie but did you hear about the one here earlier in the week? The teacher kept the kid after school and caused him to miss his ride. She never told the parents he had to stay and then she sent him home with another parent that he did not even know? That mom was LIVID to!

That almost screams child predator to me!

BAC'sMom replied: OMG I didn't heard about that. This Mom would be pissed! growl.gif

gr33n3y3z replied: your joking right about this statement

"I'm not going to pretend to make it OK," said Alief ISD Assistant Superintendent Paula Smith. "I am going to tell you, these people are dedicated to children's safety, to their lives."

Ummm yeah right geeze what next

Brias3 replied: You can tell how dedicated they are- so dedicated, they couldn't even check this guy's ID/the child's file! What is WRONG with this world? That's too scary to even think about. What's weirder yet is what the guy meant by "I went to the wrong school and picked up the wrong kid." Who gets sent to a school to pick up a 5-year old they don't know but suddenly realizes it after a couple hours at THEIR HOUSE?? growl.gif

That whole story boggles my mind. How scary mad.gif

jem0622 replied: Nice growl.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: everything about that is questionable. From a "friend" of a parent being sent to a school, only to pick up a kid that he apparently did not know from Adam. Why would a parent entrust someone to do that, that did not know your child well?

huh.gif some dude?? could you be more specific here, that is SOMEONE's child you are referring to that was picked up by "some dude" growl.gif

Is there not a system of checks and balances so to speak? If the nurse releases a child, should the front office still check id of potential people from the beginning when they first walk up and inquire about a child, comparing that to the authorized p/u people of children?

GGGRRRR...... growl.gif

holley79 replied: I would be so livid. growl.gif

amynicole21 replied: That makes no sense to me... he didn't know the kid's name? They just gave him whomever was sitting around at the time?? growl.gif I don't even know what I would do. growl.gif

MommyToAshley replied: ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif
The entire story makes no sense to me and is really scary. The school made a HUGE error.... not even that, they were careless and neglectful... and is now trying to cover their own butts.

I hope the Mom can get some answers and the school starts thinking about the child instead of themselves. I am glad the child is safe at home and I pray nothing really happened to him.

MamaJAM replied: That district needs some SERIOUS employee training (and some firings as well). How in the WORLD do you send a child home without checking who the person is picking them up...and if they are allowed to pick the child up!?!?! Thank goodness the boy was returned....hopefully, he really is unharmed.

luvmykids replied:
WTF? Excuse me it slipped.

How could anyone buy that BS that he "mistakenly picked up the wrong kid"?

TOTALLY INEXCUSIBLE to not even check that he was ok'd to pick up that child. growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif

And if he is so harmless why isn't he offering to talk to the mom and answer her questions? growl.gif
