Did I hear that correctly????

mckayleesmom wrote: Today I was watching General hospital and I got up to do something and there was a news break.....I didn't catch it all, but did I hear they are thinking about giving out economic stimulus checks again?

Did I hear it wrong?

Maddie&EthansMom replied: As far as I know not everyone has received theirs. They are just now releasing the last of the stimulus checks.

lovemy2 replied:
People that filed their returns on extension will now be receiving theirs - if they didn't file a return by 10/15 they won't get one.

mckayleesmom replied: Oh...But the thing I saw I could have sworn said that they are toying with the idea of doing it again and that President Bush is ok with the idea....It didn't say anything about people that just hadn't recieved theirs.

Kaitlin'smom replied: not that we cant use the money but huh????

mckayleesmom replied:
thats what I was thinking....Sure everyone can use the money, but most people didn't even spend it like they thought they would...so what makes them think they would again?

MommyToAshley replied: Yes, but it is the democrats this time that is toying around with the idea of a stimulus check. Nothing has passed yet, but I think it's just a ploy to get more votes at election time. However, they are proposing that not everyone will get this one, it will mostly go to the unemployed from what I understand.. or at least that is what Nancy Pelosi said in an interview.

Obama is on record as saying that as part of this economic plan,
"That’s why I’ve called for another round of fiscal stimulus, an immediate $50 billion to help those who’ve been hit hardest by this economic downturn – Americans who have lost their jobs, their homes, and are facing rising costs and cutbacks in state and local services like education and health care."

Personally, I hope it doesn't pass. I'm not sure why republicans haven't picked up on this and come out against it as another ploy to "redistribute the wealth" and give the tax dollars paid by those who do work to those who don't. Maybe they don't want to be on record as being against a stimulus check at election time?

Kaitlin'smom replied: so if it did pass mine would cancel out? they take my money I work for and give it to DH who lost his job?? sorry that sounds funny laugh.gif

I dont think it would be a very good idea either I mean ya 300 per person is nice but its really not going to stimulate anything. Its not enough for anyone to pay rent or a mortgage with. Even if married 600 would not have cut it either for 1 month for the average rent and mortgage.

there are better ways to stimulate things

mckayleesmom replied:
Like a bake sale.... laugh.gif

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Today was the second time I have heard something about a second stimulus package. This is the breaking news alert I got today from our local news channel.
Dow Surges 413 Points On 2nd Stimulus Talk
The Dow closes 413 points up following Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's
call for a second economic stimulus plan.

mammag replied: Haven't they learned that throwing money at every problem is not the answer. I definitely think it is an election time tactic.

PrairieMom replied: I heard it too, how scary. We can't just keep Throwing $ out there, did you know that the Dollar used to be the #1 ranked currency in the world and now we are #11!?! huh.gif mad.gif This whole thing is such a mess, and the more the people in charge keep trying to "help" it seems like things just get worse. sad.gif I think another stimulus check is the worst idea. Good grief. Mine will go directly into savings again. rolleyes.gif

momofone replied: Democrats also are considering a second round of tax rebates to follow the $600-$1,200 checks most individuals and couples got earlier this year. That money, going directly to consumers in hopes they would spend it, could push the price tag much higher.

This is what i just read. i copied and pasted it.

my2monkeyboys replied: I totally agree with you, that it's a redistribution of wealth. It's such a waste of money - OUR tax money- but here at election time no one would want to be against 'helping the country,' even if it really is hurting us.

Calimama replied:
Couldn't have said it better myself.

What a mess. rolleyes.gif

jem0622 replied: JMHO...I think that pinning it on a political party is definitely not proper. I say that because you have to look at the people who are losing profits right now...businesses, banks, etc. They all have something to lose...a lot to lose, actually...by the American publics worries and tightening of the pocket book.

Do I think more stimulus is the answer? Definitely not. We are trying to dig out of a mess...not throw more dirt on top. And I don't think it will fix any of the serious issues we are facing now. They need to focus, collectively, on long-standing reforms to work towards a very slow resolution.

Hiring is down, groceries are costing us more, furloughs and layoffs are on the horizon, and foreclosures continue. States are running out of unemployment money. This is a nationwide problem. Pointing fingers does nothing in a time like this. I honestly think (regardless of who I intend on voting for next month) that neither candidate is equipped to fix this...just like our current President and his political appointees/administration do not. They do not know where to start...other than taking over the worst of it and auditing it profusely.

MommyToAshley replied:
I think you misunderstood me. I didn't blame the current financial crisis on the democratic party, but they are the ones on record as proposing the stimulus package. The original package that was proposed was to go to unemployed only, but now they are considering a package similar to the last one that was passed. This one is to go out around Christmas time to stimulate the economy, although I don't know how they would distribute it by then. Bush is now on board as saying that he would consider it and most likely would not veto it. I still think it is a ploy to get votes. And, you are right, it really doesn't matter who proposes it as it looks like it might pass before there is even an election -- I am against it either way.

I was also 100% against the bail-out of the banks. So what if the responsible banks ended up buying the ones that made bad loan decisions. That's capitalism at it's best. I think the bail-out will come to be known as one of our biggest mistakes. People and companies need to know they will be held accountable for making financially irresponsible decisions. I'm not talking about people that lost their jobs (there should be and there are programs in place to help those folks), but I think it is ridiculous that people spend beyond their means and then expect to be bailed out -- that goes for corporations too.

lisar replied:
this is true because I havent gotten mine.

MyLilAngel replied: I heard this recently on the news. I wasn't really paying attention at the time. This isn't the first I've heard about the possibility of another check. With our government.....we always have to wait and see what the final verdict will be.
