Dang it! Lauren has something
kit_kats_mom wrote: Lauren has been extra clingy and kind of fussy since Monday. Monday night, she didn't go to sleep unitl 3:30am. I attibuted it to teething and gas (she had some serious gas going on whew). Yesterday, I picked her up after her nap and she was on fire. I took her temp and it was 101.7 axillary. I had an aha moment and thought, it all adds up, ear infection. So I called the ped and scheduled an appt.
We get there and our regular ped is off so we see a new lady...who I now HATE and hope I never have to see again. After she decided that L's ears were in fact fine, she stuck the popsicle stick in Lauren's mouth to get a look at her throat and she gagged her so I was covered in barf and holding a squirmy baby and trying to calm K down because she was freaking that her sister was so upset & barfing. Oh, K was also wearing her dragon costume...Thanks Amy! Lol
So the ped decides that there is no obvious reason for the fever and she gives Lauren tylenol and tells us to wait a bit. They come in 45 minutes later and now Laurens temp has gone up to 103.8 but she's still acting ok. Kinda fussy but pretty normal. So I'm not terribly worried. Until the ped tells me that it could be an infection and she wants to catheratize Lauren to get a urine sample for testing. Well we do that, much to Lauren's dismay and K's disbelief. "why are they sticking that tube in Laurens bahgina mommy?" asks the little dragon with fear in her eyes, who I'm SURE will NEVER go to the doctors again without a fight.
That came back fine so the ped sends us to after hours urgent care for blood work and x-rays. I'm still thinking that it's all a bit extreme but when the ped is talking about possible blood infections and stuff...it's hard not to worry. We get to urgent care and they take L's blood (which she hated of course) and then they put her in that baby xray torture contraption (the little plastic tube with her arms in the air? way too much for me) all to have the dr tell me that it's something viral and to follow up with the ped today.
We have an appointment at 1:55 with our regular ped who I love. I'm really ticked off about tortuing poor L for nothing.
DansMom replied: Egad, that doc must be fresh out of med school or something. Poor Lauren! I hope she burns this off quickly, whatever it is
Kaitlin'smom replied: oh shessh thats sounds terrible, poor thing, sis and mom for haing to endure all that. I hope your reg ped can figure it out and then I would tell them all about what they put her though for NOTHING.
jcc64 replied: That sounds mighty traumatic, Cary. Was the new dr young? They tend to be overly cautious and test happy. I mean, I guess it's good to rule the big stuff out, but man, at what price? In any event, hope she (and you) recovers quickly! (We're sick over here too- Corey's been home from school all week)
luvmykids replied: Poor baby! Hope she's over it quickly, and glad you get to see your REAL doctor!
Sarah&Mackenzie replied: awww poor thing, I hope that she gets better soon!!
~Roo'sMama~ replied: Wow, poor Lauren! I'm sorry she went through all that for nothing. I hope she's feeling better soon!
amynicole21 replied: Holy moly! What the heck? That is a nightmare. I'm sorry she's not feeling well, and all of that probably made it even worse.
Glad the dragon costume is getting some use though
NEWMOM05 replied: Oh geez, that's crazy. I guess it's better to be safe than sorry but that seemed a little extreme. I know what you mean about not having your reg.ped. My office has pacs that we see alot. I found one that we really liked then he left. A diif. one told us had to get her to an eye Dr. right away. I hassled with my insurance and made the appt, then we see her reg dr and she says no need. Sheesh all that worry to be told the pac jumped the gun. We were told by the pac when she was 2 weeks old.

coasterqueen replied: Ahhhh your post brings back too many painful memories for me...but Kylie was just 2 months old. She even did the barf thing but NOT because someone stuck something down her throat, but just because she was crying so much from all that crap you described and she did it all down my shirt in the ER, which I wore for hours later. Stupid people couldn't catherize a baby and it was the worst nightmare either. Went to the ped the next day and they said "ER was wrong, just viral, go home, don't EVER go to the ER again". That's exactly what my doc said. It was the worse thing ever. We wouldn't have even taken her in but her temp was very high for quite some time and she was really lethargic.
Sorry to steal your thread.
Hope she feels better soon.
kit_kats_mom replied: Coxackie (I know I slaughtered that spelling) virus. Our regular ped recognized the two distinctive spots on each tonsil right away.
amynicole21 replied:
Aaaaaargh! Did you complain about the other doc? Any treatment for that other than "wait it out?"
kit_kats_mom replied: no. I should have complained but she's a new doc, just a year or so out of school. She was very nice, just over reacted. I talk a big game but when it comes down to it, I hate telling on people. LOL
No, just wait it out. it's hand foot and mouth disease. basically fevers & mouth sores for a few days along with fussiness. just tylenol & motrin
jcc64 replied: The spelling was pretty close, Cary- it's Coxsackie, and I only know that b/c the town for which it's named is right near here, and my granny grew up there. That's alot to go through for that diagnosis. Maybe I would mention it to your reg ped, not in the spirit of getting the other one in trouble, but so maybe she can learn from it. My brother used to be pretty test happy back in the day, suspecting all sorts of exotic things I'd never heard of (and wished I hadn't) and unnecessarily freaking me out in the process. Anyway, lots of ice pops- that's my Rx for Coxsackie. She's not gonna want to eat with the mouth sores (at least mine didn't).
How much does K weigh these days, btw? I just had Corey at the dr, and she's still 28 lbs even. Won't eat a thing, ever. Starting to drive me nuts. And I can't even stuff her full of dairy b/c of her poopy issues. ugh!
DansMom replied: Bummer---that's a no-fun virus. Sorry little Lauren had to go through all that too.
kit_kats_mom replied: she seems to want to nurse a lot but she's off her solids for sure. She's chugging an apple juice slushee as we speak.
K is still a tiny little thing. 28 lbs. She is eating a little better but she's also very active.
ediep replied: oh no!!!! How horrible!! I am so glad that you got an answer though, hope she is feeling better soon.
There is a ped at the practice that we use that I refuse to see for that exact reason. She sent us to the ER twice and tried to do it a third time but we decided to wait it out and jason turned out to be fine.
DansMom replied: Jeanne and Cary, Daniel was 28.6 pounds last week. He's still really tiny too!
kimberley replied: i woulda lost it. all three of you are troopers going thru all that. i hope Lauren feels better soon.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: I'm so sorry, Cary. That must have been awful on everyone. I'm glad you got a diagnosis and I hope she feels better soon.
