DH has been asked...
MamaJAM wrote: A few months ago - DH was asked by a former student of his (he teaches at the Hebrew high at our synagogue) to speak at a convention (for teens). It was to be one speech sometime during the weekend-long convention. The girl called again yesterday - not just to confirm that he was coming -- but to ask him to be the key-note speaker for the entire conference! They want him to give one speech Friday night during services - then another during the main service Sat morning and to be around for a Q&A session Sat afternoon. The conference is about two hours away - they'd put him up in a hotel right there - as well as provide all of his meals during his stay. He'd only be gone one night....he'd head home right after Shabbat ended (sunset-Sat) -- the conference goes through Sunday but he'd come home. I'm very excited for him - and, honestly, proud that he's been asked to do this. The kids at the convention actually have to apply to come (submit letters why they want to be there, etc)....so it wouldn't be a group of kids 'forced' to be there. DH actually debated doing it though -- he feels guilty about leaving me and the kids on Shabbat (there's no way we can all go with him). I told him to go...he says he's going to do it.

MamaJAM replied: The kids LOVE him. He teaches an elective and every kid signs up trying to get in each semester. He has a blast with them.
Actually - I wish I had had teachers like him in school ('regular' or religious school). He's a dynamic speaker - and comfortable in front of a crowd. He's actually been working on a few speaking engagements in our area for teens and adults on various topics.

Shabbat is the Jewish sabbath - celebrated from sunset Fri through sunset Sat. Just as on the 7th daywhen G-d rested during creation....as Jews we also 'rest' - meaning no work, cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc -- it's a day set aside for worship, study, and rest. It's also a day to be with family and 'unwind'.
