DH and I had an interesting convo tonight - any input?

kit_kats_mom wrote: My DH is quite a bit more conservative than I am. I tend to be somewhat conservative in fiscal matters but I'm way more liberal than he is when it comes to social issues. Put it this way, he's a fox news/AM radio fella whereas I am more NPR. rolling_smile.gif

So tonight he's going on and on about how the media is so biased. I guess one of the conservative guys on the radio was quoting some newspaper article that basically said that the small business owners are upset and losing money because of our countries low unemployment rate. His point was that's dumb and that it's just another example of the liberal media trying to make GW look bad. Everyone is happy when the unemployment rate is down because they all have jobs.
I usually just "ummm hummm honey" but I was feeling a bit fiesty and so I decided to play devils advocate. happy.gif My point was that small business owners would likely feel a pinch in their bottom line due to lack of labor at a cheap wage. They'd have to raise wages to get people in which would basically take the money right from the owner. DH said I was being a twit. rolling_smile.gif

So, what ever happened to fair and unbiased reporting? Is there such a thing anymore? Where do you guys get your news?

I really hate that I'm pretty much tuned out these days from the media but frankly, I'd rather feel kind of stupid at a dinner party than become paranoid and anxious all the time KWIM? If I knew that what I was being told was just the facts and I would be able to form my own opinion based on said facts, that would be different. Instead, when I do watch or listen to the news, I am just feeling like it is some kind of puzzle. "Listen closely and then pick the part of this statement that is not biased in some way." Drives me nuts and I just don't have time for that kind of deep thinking right now. Seriously, I forgot that I needed shampoo during the 2 minutes it took me to walk from the shower to the shopping list in the kitchen. I went shopping and then had to go shopping again just for shampoo. growl.gif

Anyway, thoughts?

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Sorry Cary, I'm a Fox news junkie, myself. blush.gif

mom2my2cuties replied:
Yup - Fox News Family here too smile.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: Fox News Channel here as well. I watch other channels because FNC tends to dwell on some topics, when all I want is the news in a nutshell but the majority of my news is from FNC.

my2monkeyboys replied: I do like FNC, too, bc they seem a bit less bias than the others. I'm sure they all have they're leanings though. They are run by humans, with power! laugh.gif
While I am very conservative in almost all areas, I still want to hear truth though, whether it goes with my ideals or against them, KWIM?

DansMom replied: I get my TV/radio news from The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert and Air America. Basically, I have time only right before bed and in snippets while driving. If it's going to be slanted, I want the slant in my direction (insanely liberal truthiness) and the fact that it's done with some humor makes it digestible for me. I occasionally get to see clips from FOX news replayed and mocked on my shows.

Mostly, I read the paper while reading between the lines. I stopped listening to NPR, even though I appreciate NPR reporting---I ended up angry and depressed first thing in the morning.

grapfruit replied: I tend to hope around internet sites and read about the news. The only real watching I do on a regular basis is the Today Show. tongue.gif And a lot of that is fluff, there's only a little bit of "hard" news.

cameragirl21 replied: i go to yahoo.com everyday to see what's happening in the world and also cnn. sometimes bbc. obviously i'm rather left leaning so i don't relate well to fox news except when it comes to middle east issues which is where i lean to the right and can find some common ground with fox news.
the media is always biased because people are biased, which is why i like to check out many different sources so i can judge for myself. i even go on to arab news networks which are very biased, like al jazeera for instance, just to see where they're coming from. the best way to make progress IMO is to understand the issues from every side.

paradisemommy replied: i personally try to watch the news maybe once a week but try to avoid it otherwise - i don't think i have to know about all the toddlers that were beaten to death, all the casualties of the war, someone shot down, robbed, raped, etc.

i'm a happier person not knowing.. wink.gif

My2Beauties replied: I get my news from our nightly Local News blush.gif laugh.gif

luvmykids replied: I don't watch/read a lot of news anymore, partly due to lack of time and partly for the same reasons you gave, I just don't have the time to try to figure out the truth dry.gif If there is some big story I'm interested in following though, it's usually fox news.

MommyToAshley replied:
It's no secret that DH and I differ on our views as well, but Wow... I think you and your DH may differ even more than myself.

I have to agree with your DH that most media tends to be more liberal... both television and most major papers. I like Fox News, but I have to admit that while they claim to be "fair & balanced" I think they lean to the right.
