Crib Bumpers are out?

MyBabeMaddie wrote: I was at a parenting class offered by our hospital yesterday where the lady said that the American Academy of Pediatrics states that parents should NOT use bumpers in the cribs. Is that really necessary? Do you still use your bumpers anyways?

Jamison'smama replied: Well I did but my son is rarely in his crib---we co-sleep most of the time (also against APA smile.gif )

jacobsmama replied: I used the bumpers on Jacob that was 2 years ago but he did just fine with them. Did they say why you shouldn't use them...Suffocation issues???

AlexsPajamaMama replied: We used crib bumpers 2 years ago also. They are softer than them rolling around into the bars of the crib. I suppose suffocation could be an issue....I wonder if thats what they are thinking.

Jamison'smama replied: I have heard that if you want to use bumpers, weave them in and out through the bars to make it less of a suffication issue---so they aren't so loose.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: I did a little looking around on the web and found this

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I used them with Logan. Never did the weaving thing. I only removed them when Logan was starting to stand and I didn't want him to be able to use them to climb out. I never found him with his face against them either. There is so much advice now that our parents never heard of. It's hard to believe we all survived childhood sometimes.

Our Lil' Family replied: I used bumpers for a few months. With the mattress at the highest, the bumpers were too tall. While it was on the middle level I used them, and now they are more trouble than it's worth when I'm changing the sheet.

It's a SIDS issue, suffocation. I'd think they would be ok until the baby can roll over, then once they are about 9 months the SIDS risk is really low.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I used a bumper with Wil and plan to use it again with the new baby. I took it out when Wil was around 7 months or so and started to roll everywhere. When they're really tiny though, I believe in swaddling (if your child likes it), plus I use those wedge things to hold them in place (on their back of course). JMO.

If you're concerned, One Step Ahead sells a mesh like bumper.

moped replied: Never used and never will sad.gif

MyLuvBugs replied: yep! Used them with Baby #1 and will use with Baby #2. With Lorelei I took them out when she was around 6-7 months and was more active in her sleep. Before then they don't really move around all that much. JMO! smile.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: wow! I read the attatached article and have decided to remove my bumpers. My son is 7 months old and is just starting to stand up in the crib, I was concerned because they are starting to get stretched out and I was afraid he might stick his head under the bumpers. I am worried he might start really bumping his head on the rails when he slips down, he is just learning to stand, and sit, but I guess its not worth the risk.
thank you for the info.

hollisterluva92 replied: [B] I use the mesh bumpers underneath my regular bumper. I took out the regular bumper once my dd started to stand on her own. She's 7 1/2 months old. Their also called Breathable bumpers. My doctor said that these aren't as much of a suffocation hazard. I never weaved mine in and out though. wub.gif

holley79 replied: Yep use bumpers in Annika's bed. Keeps her from putting her feet between the bars.

lisar replied: I do. They keep her from bumping her head on it when she rolls over at night. She rolls around alot when she is sleeping. I have never heard that.

CantWait replied: I used the bumper. I wasn't concerned with SIDS only because Anthony slept on his back so he was always getting air.

luvmykids replied:
Exactly what I was thinking, by the time they're moving to the bumpers they're also able to turn their heads and maybe even pick their heads up. Mine stayed in until we took the cribs down unsure.gif

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I didn't use a bumper with Jade because I was told that this was a SIDS risk. When we were in MD and Jordan was sleeping in the same crib I still didn't have bumpers in there. Well we are at my Mom's house and she found this nice white metal crib at goodwill. There is a bumper in there. It looks nice and it's keeping Jordan from rolling into that cold metal.
