Circumscision complication

EvesMom wrote: Soon after I brought Jesse home from the hospital he developed a rash in his diaper area which I thought was diaper rash. After using triple paste on it for a few days it was still worsening and spreading. I took him to the pediatrician and he said it was a staph infection, took a swab sample and sent us home with antibiotics and ointment. After a few days it appeared to be getting better and then it got worse again. On memorial day weekend I took Jesse to the ER. The ER ped said my doctor was wrong and that it was a yeast infection. He sent us home with nystatin cream. Two days and no inprovment passed. The rash was spreading leaving peeling red raw skin and pustules. I went back to the ped on tuesday, they had gotten back the lab results and it was MRSA. For those who don't know what that is, it's a strain of staph that has become resistant to most antibiotics. The doc sent us to the hospital for IV antibiotics. MRSA can be very dangerous and life threatening, especially to a newborn. I was a complete basket case. Jesse received a dose of IV antibiotics every 6 hours for 5 days. The antibiotic burns going in. Also, when they ran his CBC's they found that Jesse has neutropenia (low white blood cell count). The hemotologist is not very concerned about it at this point. we will be going for follow up this week. I stayed in the hospital the entire time and we were released yesterday evening. The rash is cleared up and hopefully will not return. Jesse's pediatrician said he probably contracted the infection while in the hospital.

indywndy_04 replied: hug.gif so sorry to hear all this, hope he is feeling better.

boyohboyohboy replied: ohmy.gif HOw horrible! I know that MRSA is mostly hosp aquired, but I think I would be writting to the board asking how a new born gets it? did the staff not wash their hands, was it the dr? That is so serious. I am so glad your son is doing better.
I would think that with an infection his wbc could have been high not low....i really think I would follow up with the hosp. and demand they check on whats going on in the nursery and update the staff, and ask the dr how that could have happened.
I know as a nurse that MRSA is common in the hosp. but this was a new born nursery so someone wasnt following precautionary measures.
good luck

hoosier momma replied: OMG how awful. I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that, but am very glad that he is doing better. I agree with Stacy that you should do some follow up with the hospital about how he contracted the infection.

jcc64 replied: wow, how scary! MRSA is usually a hospital acquired infection. Apparently it's also now on the rise in the general population due to irresponsible antibiotic overprescription. A little toddler girl I know got it without any reasonable explanation about its origins. She was very ill for a few weeks, but is fine now.
I'd be asking alot of questions about proper procedures being followed in the nursery. I hope that he recovers quickly and without complications. hug.gif

lovemy2 replied: So scary to think that the one place we think our kids (or anyone for that matter) are safe is in a hospital then that...many prayers that he continues to improve - poor baby hug.gif

jcc64 replied: My brother, who happens to be an attending physician at a major teaching hosptial with a first rate reputation, tells everyone that the last place you want to be if you're sick, is a hospital. Pretty scary, huh?

PrairieMom replied:
this is very true. The first place I would look to place blame is the Dr. I never see Dr's wash their hands. I take that back, I HAVE seen a few of our Pediatric dr's wash, but I don't remember ever seeing an adult doc doing it. Or washing their stethoscopes for that matter. Its sooooo gross. I NEVER touch a Patient or anything in the Patients rooms with out gloves. puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif puke.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Oh you poor thing...and poor Jesse. Hope he is healing and that things get back to normal in no time. Hang in there. Good to see you back to PC by the way. How's Evelyn...that's your DD right? hug.gif

EvesMom replied: Thank you everyone for your PT&P's . Jesse went for his follow up today and all looks well except for a nasty candida infection from all of the antibiotics. At least he doesn't have thrush. I'll have to give him nystatin oral solution and nystatin ointment for a bit to clear it up.

I can't point a finger at anyone in particular at this point. Because of the complicated pregnancy, Jesse was seen by a lot of doctors while we were in the hospital. He also spent a lot of time in the nursery.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
Typically that is the case, high white blood cell counts when there is infection present. However, I've seen cases where the body kind of exhausts it's supply and the WBC count decreases. Hopefully things will stable out now that he's beaten the staph.

MyBabeMaddie replied: Omg! I am so sorry to hear that! We learned about MRSA and MSSA, MRSE, MSSE this semester in my microbiology class, how scary! Poor baby! Here's some ~~~~~~~Get well vibes!

MommyToAshley replied: I am so sorry.. that sounds so horrible and scary! I am so glad to hear he is doing much better now. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif
