Changing times.... - hospitals, etc during/after birth

MamaJAM wrote: I don't know why - but I was thinking today about how different my experiences were in the hospital/etc for my kids births. So - I was wondering if things were different all over.

So - here's what I want to know....and please answer for each of your kids because I'm not just curious how different things are around the country/world...but I'd love to know how things have been changing since we all started having kids....
1) Year and section of the country/world you live in
2) Did the hospital have one room you stayed in for Labor/Delivery/Post Partum...or did you move from room to room during your stay.
3) How long were you in the hospital.
4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.
5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.
6) Was an announcement of your bbay's birth printed in the newspaper -- did you have to request it or ask for it not to be printed.

Thanks for answering. smile.gif

For DD and DS (Both are the same)

1- Northern Minnesota
2- Switched rooms (I had c-sections with both my children), but had private room both times.
3- Stayed 2 nights
4- I had a choice if I wanted them with me
5- Yes we filled out the forms before leaving
6- We could have had it in the newspaper, but we forgot blush.gif

danahas4monkeys replied: DD #1 was born in Germany (ex husband was in the army) labor and delivery was in a small room with only a midwife and my ex no drugs no option she kept telling me in very broken english it didnt hurt that bad and i didnt need drugs. within half an hour of delivery they made me go take a shower! then put me in a community room which had 2 rows of beds on opposite sides of the room there were about 20 or so beds there were like 10 other women in there with me. the baby stayed with me all the time cause the only idenification the babies had on them was a beaded (seriously) bracelet on their wrists with the last name only. it was a german hospital we were almost 2 hours away from the nearest military hospital and didnt have a car. I stayed like 5 days not sure why cause when i asked to go home they were like "oh you want to go home" uh yah! well it was in the military news. had to go to the american consulate and get a birth certificate, got ss card once back in states.

DS #1 we lived in KY but he was born about 10 minutes away in Ohio. I labored in one room then ended up with a csection. he was in the room with me alot. 3 days in hospital. yes in paper , filled all papers out in hospital.
DD #2 and DS #2 (we are in Ohio but a different part than DS #1 )were both scheduled csections, so after the csections they were with me all the time DH didnt want them going to the nursery lol (his first babies) he didnt want them to get mixed up or lost lol so they only went to the nursery if they absolutely had to lol! stayed 8 days first time dd was very sick at first and ds stayed 2 days got out ASAP! not in paper but online, filled all paperwork for ss card and birth certificate out before leaving.

2) The hospital had several rooms you were to move to....I was lucky in that I was able to labor/deliver in the same room (because I was induced). They also had mostly shared post-partum rooms...they did have 2 private rooms but you had to pay extra for....again, I was lucky in that all of the double-rooms were full when I finally gave birth and I got a private room (since I had no choice - I wasn't charged extra).
3) 2 full days after delivery
4) The hospital was just starting to do 'rooming-in' because I had had a very rough delivery - DD was with me only about 50% of the time while I tried to recover.
5) Filling out the forms while in the hospital was optional -- if you did fill them out the hospital would mail them for you. I filled them out while there to save myself the headaches of trying to remember later.
6) The hospitals in the area all supplied list of the babies born to the local paper. If you didn't want you baby listed - you had to fill out a form asking to be omitted.

DD#2
1) 1996 - eastern PA
2) The hospital had converted to LDR rooms and single post partum rooms. You only ever had to move once during your time there.
3) 1.5 days after delivery
4) The hospital was mostly rooming-in.....DD was with me about 80% of the time.
5) Filling out forms was still optional....I did it while there because they still mailed them for you if you did.
6) The newspaper still printed baby lists...though you had to fill out a form in the hospital requesting that your child be included.

DD#3
1) 1999 - eastern PA
2) LDR and separate post partum units. Only had to move once during your stay.
3) 1.5 days after delivery
4) Mostly rooming-in....but due to breathing problems after delivery - DD spent a little more time in the nursery for the first day. She was with me about 60% of my entire hospital stay.
5) Filling out forms was still optional - they still mailed them for you.
6) To be included in the paper - parents had to fill out a request form.

DS#1
1) 2002 - eastern PA
2) The hospital we've always delivered in moved the maternity ward from one building to another. The main change was the triage-area where you were to be checked out first to see if you really were in labor when you arrived at the hospital. All rooms in the entire maternity dept were now private. Then you were moved to an LDR room - a while after delivery you were moved to the post partum unit on another floor. I was lucky again - since I was being induced - I was able to avoid the triage area completely...and only had to move rooms once.
3) almost 2 full days after delivery -- due to genetic testing he needed done
4) Rooming-in.....DS was with me most of the time I was there.
5) You were required to fill out a birth certificate form and the social security forms before leaving the hospital.
6) The newspapers no longer printed any baby lists.

DS#2
1) 2003 - eastern PA
2) Same as the year before.
3) 1.5 days after delivery
4) The hospital still was mostly rooming-in...but - due to me being exhausted - I had them keep DS in the nursery the entire first night. I planned to have them keep him the second night as well...but there were 2 sets of twins born and the nurses were needed elsewhere.
5) Again -- all forms were required to be filled out before leaving the hospital.
6) Newspapers no longer print that info.

EvesMom replied: 1) 2005, New Jersey, USA
2) Labor and delivery suite, then a recovery room. (all private rooms)
3) Total of 3 days, 2 postpartum.
4) Rooming in only. They baby only would go to the nursery for evaluations, or if you wanted to take a shower.
5) All forms were taken care of in hospital.
6) As far as I know, no anouncement was made.

Bee_Kay replied: I forgot to add the date.

Started out in triage, moved to labor room, moved to OR which is standard for twins in case of emergency c-section

3) How long were you in the hospital.
4 days, I could've gone home after 3 but the nurses talked me into staying and resting up as much as I could

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.
I had a choice, they stayed in a lot but when I wanted to sleep the nurses took them and brought them back when they were hungry

5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.

3) How long were you in the hospital.
2 days

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.
Had a choice, she stayed a lot more than the twins did. Smaller hospital, fewer nurses.

5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.
Same as above for twins

6) Was an announcement of your bbay's birth printed in the newspaper -- did you have to request it or ask for it not to be printed.
Announcement in paper 2 months later, small town newspaper behind the times! Automatically gets birth records from hospital, you have to tell them if you don't want to be included.

Both times got a private room with a shower!!! biggrin.gif

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was. 5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital. yes to both - we didn't have to do it before we left though.

2) Did the hospital have one room you stayed in for Labor/Delivery/Post Partum...or did you move from room to room during your stay. I was induced so spent my labor time in one room and then when I was ready to start pushing I was moved to a delivery room. I then moved hospitals to our local one and had my own room (lucky) where I stayed until I left.
3) How long were you in the hospital. Only until the day after I had Abby. I hate hospitals.
4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.
She stayed with me the whole time. They don't have nurserys as far as I know. They do for prem babies/NICU babies. The only time she left me was when I needed some good sleep and the midwife offered to take her for an hour or two. She slept in their office I think.
5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.
No. As far as I know they don't do that in hospital anymore. We had to fill in the forms that we requested NZ Births, Deaths and Marriages to send us and then we had to send them back and then they sent out the Birth Certificate and IRD number.
6) Was an announcement of your bbay's birth printed in the newspaper -- did you have to request it or ask for it not to be printed.
They don't do that as far as I know. My mum took the details and phoned the paper and told them what we wanted and they printed it at our cost.

3) How long were you in the hospital. 2 days, but I could have left 14 hours after Logan's birth except for his heart condition

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was. ]Rooming in, but I could send Logan to the nursery if I wanted and they asked that he be in the nursery when I was sleeping so he could be closely monitored (heart

5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital. Filled out birth certificate information but had to request it from Boise after we got home, filled out SS information, but it was optional to wait

When I got to L&D I was taken to the big L&D room. I labored, delivered and recovered in that room. I was moved to a slightly smaller room closer to the nursery.

3) How long were you in the hospital.
I got to the hospital at 1205am on Dec 28th and checked out Dec 30th at 125p.

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.
We had rooming- in at our hospital but you also had a choice. I choose to have Annika in the room with me. I did, however, send her to the nursery the second night for a couple hours after I nursed her to give me a break.

5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.
We had a lady come to our room to fill out everything. Some stuff was filled out when we first got to the hospital. All the fill in the blank stuff.

6) Was an announcement of your bbay's birth printed in the newspaper -- did you have to request it or ask for it not to be printed.
We were asked if we wanted it printed in the newspaper. Thanks for reminding me of this, it's only March I need to contact the newspaper and get a copy. We live in Escambia county and it was printed in Santa Rosa county where she was born. blink.gif

2) Did the hospital have one room you stayed in for Labor/Delivery/Post Partum...or did you move from room to room during your stay. IT WAS A BIRTHING CENTER ... LOCATED NEXT TO A HOSPITAL FOR EMERGENCIES TECHNICALLY IT WAS THE HOSPITAL. IT WAS ONE ROOM THAT YOU LABORED, DELIVERED AND POST PARTUMED IN. IT HAD A PRIVATE BATH, A PLACE FOR THE BABY, A PULL OUT BED FOR HUBBY, TWO ROCKING CHAIRS FOR MOM, GRANDMA OR DAD OR WHOEVER. IT WAS A VERY NICE PLACE.

I DID NOT SEND HIM TO THE NURSERY FOR ANYTHING ELSE ALTHOUGH THEY WOULD TAKE HIM FOR HIS BLOOD TESTS THAT HE WAS HAVING EVERY FEW HOURS. WHEN HE WAS 5 DAYS OLD THE NURSES TOLD ME TO LEAVE THE HOSPITAL AND TAKE A BREAK AND THEY TOOK HIM TO THE NURSERY.

3) How long were you in the hospital.: Too long...7 days because the pediatricians wouldn't let Wil go home because his bili wouldn't go down. DH and I stayed with him the whole time.

4) Did the hospital have rooming-in (did the baby stay with you much of the time...or go to the nursery a lot) -- did you have a choice of where your baby was.: I definitely had a choice...the first couple nights, he roomed in with us, but since we were there so long and I thought it was important we all got some rest, I believe he stayed in the nursery for at least 1-2 of the nights.

5) Did you fill out a birth certificate form with your baby's name....did you fill out a social security card form (or similar forms for your country if not in the USA) -- was it optional to do so before leaving the hospital.: I filled out the forms at the hospital, but I don't remember if it was a choice to do then or do later. 1. We live in Colorado. Edward was born July of last year
2. There was a labor/delivery room, I went into the OR room for my c-section (obviously) and then I went into a post partum room.
3. I was in the hospital for 4 days. I went in at 2 pm on a Thursday, gave birth at 6:33 am on Friday morning. Since I had the c-section, I was there until Monday.
4. We had the choice of having the baby room-in with us. Since DH went home at the end of the day, he would take the baby to the nursery and come back and say good bye to me. During the night, the nurses would bring Edward in for feeding. But I didn't want him in the room incase I fell asleep and I feared waking up with my baby gone! ohmy.gif But Edward was with me all day.
5. We filled out froms for the birth certificate.
6. We were never asked if we wanted his birth announced in a newspaper. We didn't even think about it!

Our hospital had those security bracelets if teh baby left the maternity ward the alarm woudl sound and doors would lock down. In teh entire hospital. Only one small flaw.. kathleen wore hers home. the alarm never sounded and we had to go back the next day to have ti removed!! Imagine their shame. We left her hospital bracelet on so they woudl know it was really her.
