Carsick vs Airsick

MamaJAM wrote: Does anyone here deal with motion-sickness of any kind? I used to be fine as a passenger in a car -- but now I have to drive everywhere because even a 5 min trip makes me queasy. I have been on airplanes before (last time was when I was 16)....and didn't have any problems -- but that was when I was fine in cars too.

If you get carsick -- will you definately get airsick? Is it possible to only get sick in a car (or on an amusement park ride...which I have problems with too now that I'm "older")? I'm in trouble, aren't I? unsure.gif
Any tips on what I can take to help me feel better that won't make me sleepy?

I'm not leaving for 5 months -- but now that I have my airplane ticket I'm getting worried. blush.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: I get horrible motion sickness. Cars (have to drive), planes, boats, amusement park rides, if it moves..I get sick. I kid you not. I can't drink very much, either b/c I throw up if I get the slightest spinning feeling. sad.gif It's awful. I get nauseated very easily.

When I'm in on the plane I sip ginger ale (haven't been on an airline yet that doesn't have this) Ginger snap cookies help, too. Anything with ginger. wink.gif I take an herbal motion sickness pill. It has no side effects and is completely safe. It works so well.

I can't remember the name of it, but if you have a whole foods they may carry it. I just found this online. Hyland's Motion Sickness Tablets I wasn't aware Hyland's made a motion sickness med, but their teething tablets work so I would trust it. thumb.gif I'm sure they all have pretty much the same thing in them (the natural remedies anyway) Also, it's less expensive than those I bought. It's worth a try. wink.gif

I went ahead and bought some for my trip in June...I'll let you know if they work. wink.gif

kimberley replied: bad motion sickness here too. i am ok on a plane for some reason, but any car ride or boat ride and i am as green as can be puke.gif it gets worse if it is sunny and the windows are up blink.gif laying down and gingerale are the only things that help. even gravol can't save me on a boat blush.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I don't get sick from airplanes really, although I hate the pressure, but definitely from cars, boats and even swinging on swings! Have all my life! Aimee has some great suggestions - sipping giner ale does help me or anything with a bit of bubbles. Also, I must be in the front seat and focus on something outside at all times. People that can read in cars are lucky IMO!

Maddie&EthansMom replied: The sun is my worst culprit. I can't get hot and I need fresh air as well. I can't bend my head down in the car (like dig for something in the floor) puke.gif I can't even look behind me to tend to the kids. That's why I like to drive. wink.gif

Yep, people that can read in the car ARE lucky. It makes me sick just to look at someone reading. laugh.gif

luvmykids replied: I'm more prone to it as a passenger in a car, but I went on a cruise and had zero trouble, and planes only if it's super bumpy. Try the motion sickness wristbands, I think they're called SeaBands. They're like sweatbands but have a magnet or something in them, my super car sick stepd uses them and they make all the difference.

C&K*s Mommie replied: So as a driver you do not feel ill, but as a passenger you do, is it because your mind is more focused as a driver?? I am sorry if this is an elementary question, but I am curious about motion sickness now. blush.gif

Maddie&EthansMom replied: Nicole...I don't get ill when I'm driving. It could be b/c I'm more focused...I've never really thought about it. It used to be that I couldn't be in the back seat..only the front (or I would get ill) But now that I have children I have to be driving. This could be b/c I'm moving around more, tending to them and not focusing on the road.

kimberley replied: wavey.gif i can drive and not get sick. i think it has to do with the fact that i am not in control when someone else is driving so i don't know when the turns and bumps are coming so i can't brace for them.

ediep replied: I get car sick if I am reading or if I am in the back seat. I got very sea sick on a cruise too.

The only time I feel queasy on a plane is if its a really bumpy flight...but its is nowhere near as bad as the boat

C&K*s Mommie replied: okay, I see. happy.gif Thanks Aimee and Kimberly! I never have had motion sickness, but I have a better understanding now. thumb.gif

MamaJAM replied: Thanks everyone. Looks like there might be hope that I'll be ok on the plane (unless it's really bumpy).
Since I have a bunch of time between now and when I leave - DH and I talked about me experimenting with motion sickness stuff on car trips. I'll definately try the SeaBands....and I'll check out herbal stuff too.

And Nicole - like the others said...I'm fine as a driver. It's when I'm a passenger - in any seat - that I feel sick. I wasn't like this before having kids...oh well- they're all worth it. happy.gif
