Carly has thrush!!
Jackie012007 wrote: I was at her dr's today (also my dr) and of course I didn't notice the nastiness in her mouth until I got home! My mom had thrush after her gastric bypass so I knew immediately what it was. Anyone have experience with this? I'm waiting for my dr. to call me back and tell me what to do... I feel just awful, did I do something wrong???
hoosier momma replied: I am sure they will give her an antibiotic. But, you could start by boiling all of her pacifiers and bottles to sterilize them. I know my sister in law had to do this when her daughter had thrush.
Edited for spelling and to add that Tara should be able to give you all kinds of advice.
Miranda1127 replied: if you bf there is a higher chance of the baby getting thrush mostly b/c you don't sanitize your nipples (kwim?). i'm not sure what you would do in this case but ask your doc when he calls you back
good luck
lovemy2 replied: We have a resident thrush expert here on PC - Prairiemom - Tara - I am sure she can help
Boo&BugsMom replied: Yep...PM Tara and ask her. I know she'll be able to help.
PrairieMom replied:
You didn't do anything wrong. Babies get it all the time. It lives in dark damp places, and hangs out on bottle nipples and paci's.
DON"T TAKE AN ANTIBIOTIC FOR IT. it is a fungus, not a bacteria. Antibiotics can actually give you thrush by killing off you good flora in your digestive tract.
you can treat it with gentian violet which you get over the counter at the pharmacy. Walmart carries it. They keep it behind the counter tho, you have to ask for it. I swab the mouth once a day, (at bedtime) with a q-tip dipped in the stuff, and do that for 3 days. Put her in old clothes that you don't care if they get ruined, cause they will. GV stains everything purple, and it won't come out. Everything her drool touches will get ruined, so watch her sheets, toys, your carpet, bibs, and your clothes too. Al was usually purple for 4 days durring treatment. it eventually wears off.
Also, boil her nipples and paci's. wash every toy you can, I would stick Al's plastic stuff in the dishwasher, wash her plush stuff in the washing machine, and wipe everything else off with sanitizing wipes.

I just wanted to add and to say it's not your fault you did nothing wrong.
PrairieMom replied: yeah, you did nothing wrong. wanted to stress that again.
Jackie012007 replied: thank you!!!! My parents have been calling me hourly basically telling me what a crappy parent I am ... the dr was no healp, she told me to watch her closely???? When my mom had thrush she was in agony, but carly seems completely unaffected by it, other than she has been sleeping 24/7. The dr didn't offer any advice, no prescription - said to watch her closely, boil everything and if it escalates to give her a call?
MyBabeMaddie replied: Don't feel bad apparently Madison had thrush for about 8 months straight we thought she had acid reflux and her Dr. was treating her for it but one of the times we were at Childrens the ER Dr. there said she had thrush, as soon as we started treatment her "acid reflux" stopped...
PrairieMom replied: Did I mention this isn't your fault? Good thing you have support here. Go get the gentian violet, and put away all her pretty things for a few days so they don't get ruined. Post a pic of her all purple. I find it hillarious!
This was Al

Of course, I was BF at the time and had to put it on my nips too, so she got extra purple from that.
MyBabeMaddie replied: Tara, you're halarious! I love that mustache!
PrairieMom replied: if we don't laugh we cry. right?
Mommy2BAK replied: Aww, I'm so sorry! I'm sure everything will be back to normal soon! Oh- and your definately not a bad parent!
A&A'smommy replied: You are NOT a bad parent it happens all the time I hope she gets over it quickly!!!!
Tara that picture is hilarious!!
luvmykids replied: I'm guessing there are no pics of that
It's nothing you did, Jackie, and your mom having had it should know that
