Caring for a wound in the mouth?

luvmykids wrote: Kylie slipped off a stool and busted her mouth up pretty good, poor baby. I remember the doctor telling me the last time I took a kid in for this kind of thing that since the mouth is so dirty they needed to rinse...

But I can't remember, rinse with what? Salt water? How often, just after eating?

She busted her lip right in the corner of her mouth and then also bit right below the lip pretty good. I didn't take her to the ER because the bleeding stopped pretty much right away but I'm wondering if I should use antibiotic stuff on it or just leave it alone?

Nina J replied: Poor Kylie sad.gif hug.gif

I would rinse it several times a day with warm, salty water. I would do it morning and night, and after eating.

mckayleesmom replied: Maybe some duluted Peroxide...I know you can gargle with it to fight infections...so I would do that before salty water.....at least for child because of the stinging factor.

A&A'smommy replied: goodness poor thing!! I don't know but the other ladies had good suggestion!! hug.gif

amynicole21 replied: We went through this with Sophia a few months ago. Honestly, we didn't do much because everything hurt her, but I did make her rinse with regular water after we ate. It healed VERY quickly. Mouth injuries usually do. You'll be shocked wink.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Due to the rich blood supply your mouth has, mouth wounds heal very fast. I don't really think you need to do anything. Just keep an eye on it for swelling.

My3LilMonkeys replied:
dito.gif Brooke smashed her head into mine accidentally a few weeks ago and we both had nasty gashes inside our lips. I didn't do anything for either of us and they were gone in 2 days.

redchief replied: I agree with the folks that recommended monitoring for infection only. The mouth heals very quickly. If I had a dime for every time I busted my mouth open when I had braces as a kid...... Good luck.

BabyOwen427 replied:
biggrin.gif your mother took all your dimes and gave them to your orthodontist. biggrin.gif

CantWait replied: I wouldn't worry to much about infection. Regular water should do fine, the saliva in your mouth is a natural rinsing agent, and since it's not an infection or canker sore then salt water won't do anymore then regular water. Other then the annoyance when eating etc...it should heal quickly. Hope it didn't dampen her spirit to much. hug.gif

luvmykids replied:
She milked it at church today emlaugh.gif but it actually looks MUCH better already.

Thanks for the advice guys, it seems to be healing perfectly fine.

MoonMama replied: sad.gif Try some Glyoxid (I know that isn't spelled right) but if you go to walgreens they will know what I'm taking about. And I am pretty sure its okay for kids above 2 although not 100% (if not they probably have something like it for kids). My niece busted the inside of her lip a couple years back pretty good, and this it what her doctor told my SIL to get her and she was 3 at the time. Anyway its not the best tasting (I've used it too) but it help heal it and numbs it, use a Q-tip to apply it. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon. hug.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Actually, Peroxide mixed with water - a 1/10 solution, a couple times a day.

Peroxide is a miracle liquid. rolling_smile.gif

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:

ITA, it cleans wounds and gets blood out of blue jeans.
