Can't get this off my mind...
MommyToAshley wrote: Ever since I watched the Oprah show where the guy accidentally killed his wife when he left his car running in the garage, I haven't been able to get something off my mind. I have been thinking about our car keys... on the key chain, we have the remotes to start our cars. (which are great when we are out in the winter) However, Ashley loves to push the buttons, and I have nightmares about her starting the car in our garage and us not knowing it. Although we put our keys up, I have decided to get rid of those remotes so I don't have to worry about it any more. Have you ever thought about that or am I just paranoid?
mckayleesmom replied: I saw that episode too...I don't have a car or remote start...but I would be worried if I did...that is really scary and something most people don't think about.
kit_kats_mom replied: Oh god. I sobbed through that whole episode....so sad. I would probably worry about that if I lived somewhere where they sell remote starting cars. whew! One thing I can check off of my "worry list".
kimberley replied: i didn't see the show but that would worry me for sure. senseless tragedies really make you think twice about things.
Becky74 replied: I don't have one and I missed Oprah, how did it actually happen?
mckayleesmom replied: There was a man that was leaving for work in the morning. His wife was asleep still in the house. He went to start his truck and it wouldn't start...so he used her car to jump start his....then he forgot to turn off her car and left for work closing the garage behind him. She had gotten carbon monoxcide poisoning. When he came home he found her and their 2 dogs dead.
MommyToAshley replied: OMG, it was the saddest story ever. His battery was dead and he had to jump his car one morning. He used his wife's car in the garage to jump his car, took the cables off, closed the garage, and went to work. He didn't realize he forgot to turn his wife's car off. He got worried when his wife didn't call (or show up, I forget which) at lunch time, and he had tried to call her the rest of the day. When he returned home from work, he found that his wife and their two dogs had died in their sleep from carbon monoxide poisoning. I cried through the entire show.
mummy2girls replied: Yes ive seen that one before. its a repeat! I cried throughout that show! I have a remote strter but i live in apartment buliding so i dont have to worry if she did accidently start my car.
A&A'smommy replied: That is SO sad!!! I don't have one of those either
ediep replied: I saw that episode twice and I cried both times!! I don't have the starter but if I did, I would worry too. I don't even park in the garage because of that. We keep our cars in the driveway
Kirstenmumof3 replied: OMG that is so sad!
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Wow, how awful!
We dont' have one... but my out-laws do. They don't havea garage though, so I'm not worried.....
Kaitlin'smom replied: OMG how horrible, I dont have a remote starter, thought about getting it but decided against it. I never even thougth about that. Really glad I did not get it since my car is the one in the garage
Boys r us replied: I usually don't park in the garage b/c I get so scared of that too!
Question, if your car is outside and it's running can it hurt you if you're inside the car?
Mommy2BAK replied: I saw that episode too. And that only happened like a few weeks before that show, so he had just lost his wife recently.
M2A, that is pretty scary, I think you are doing the right thing by getting rid of it, at least for now, or until Ashley is a little older.
3xsthefun replied: OMG! That sounds so awful! I didn't see the show.
Our cars park outside since there is no room her at his parent garage. They have way to much junk no room for cars.
If we ever get a garage it will never be attached to the house.
chloe&tysmommy replied: yeah, I had seen that episode before. That was soooo sad and very scary....I think I would get rid of your remotes for sure! I never thought about that but you made a great point....I would have nightmares too.
I think all kids love playing with keys and remotes...once Chloe took my keys off the ledge at my moms house and pushed the panic button and my horn was going off...I looked out the window (not even realizing it was my vehicle) and my lights were blinking and it was soooo loud! How embarrasing
Maddie&EthansMom replied: That is incredibly sad Scotty's friend's wife died this way as well. It was a couple of years ago. She went out with some friends one night and they were all drinking. She got home around 12 or so and her DH was asleep. She wasn't a wild person at all and rarely went out, however her DH didn't worrry about her. She pulled into the garage, closed the garage door behind her, but must have passed out in the car and she never turned it off. He found her the next morning. They had a small child.
I hate hearing stuff like this, but Cary is right, it really makes you think. I'm glad you are getting rid of your remotes.
My2Beauties replied: OMG that is so sad I would never even think about that sort of thing. I dont have a remote start on my car nor do I have a garage, but this will make me think twice if I ever do have one! I know one thing I wouldn't want my car warming up in the morning for even 2 minutes in a garage...that is so dangerous!
~Roo'sMama~ replied: OMG that's so sad! Did he get charged with anything? I hope not... the poor guy. I never would have thought about the danger of having the remote control starter when you're car is parked in the garage ~ you're probably right to get rid of it for now anyways!
I've wondered about this too... I don't think it can as long as it's not running for too long, and if you're exhaust pipe is working right and pointing the exhaust away from the car. I'm not sure though.
DansMom replied: Another safety measure you can take is to install Carbon Monoxide detector alarms in several places, especially the garage and the bedrooms. A firefighter once told me that the kind you plug into an outlet are better than the battery operated fire/carbon combination type. I haven't done this yet, and although we don't have a garage we do have a furnace, and your post reminds me that I really want to purchase at least one of the high quality CM detectors.
gr33n3y3z replied: I can understand your point but I think your just paranoid.
If the keys are up no big deal Even if she did turn your car on you would hear it or smell it before it had any effect.
chloe&tysmommy replied: Ohhhhh I didn't know this! I'm always paranoid about things like this happening so I bought a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detector all in one but it's not the kind you plug in...it's the one on batteries. I wonder why the ones you plug in are better?
I would suggest everyone buying one of these though..
even though we don't have an attached garage I'm always worried about our furnace too
MySweetBabies replied: I saw that show and was crying the whole time. Just so scary to think what could happen.
MySweetBabies replied: If the exhaust pipe gets blocked you could die from the carbon monoxide. I don't remember when it was but I heard a story about a guy whos 2 yr old daughter died from carbon monoxide. She was waiting for him in the car and he left it running to keep her warm while he shoveled snow. Snow blocked the exhaust pipe and she ended up dying. It was so sad.
DVFlyer replied: Never thought of the keys/ kids starting the card thing. We don't have a need for something like that out here, but it's good information to keep in mind. Thanks.
