Calling all Wii Owners!

Boo&BugsMom wrote: We are biting the bullet and getting a Wii as a family present this year. I earned $225 in Target gift cards through our rewards checking program at our credit union...YAY! So, needless to say, that is where I will be purchasing it.

My question...the bundle I will be getting comes with a regular remote, a sensored remote, Wii Sports, and Wii Sports Resort. What are the other "must haves" that we will need and what games would you recommend??? I will be getting at least one extra controller on Black Friday when they are half the price. I can't go hog wild and get all the perks and bells and whistles, but I want to get things that will make it enjoyable for all of us until we can afford to puchase a few more things.

So...what would you recommend, at least to start???

msoulz replied: Game called Animal Crossing. It's very family friendly. Does take some reading but even a non reader can fly through the words and carry on fishing, catching bugs, etc.

MommyToAshley replied: If you all like to sing/karaoke, then I would recommend one of the singing games... Disney Party Hits, American Idol, or Lips (but I think the Disney one is more age appropriate songs). You can get a game with the mic or you can use a compatible mic if you have one. Ashley also likes the dance games too.

Also, I seem to recall you have some Mario fans in the house, right? Then, definitely Super Mario Galaxy.

If racing games is more your style, Mario cart is fun... you get one wheel with the game but would have to purchase another for two player game.

We also like "family game night".

I would wait to see what Black Friday brings.. video games are almost always on sale during this time.

Have you purchased the Wii yet? If not, you may want to look at the Xbox Kinect. It is like the Wii but you don't need controllers. It is better because it picks up on you whole body movement. And, the graphics are so much BETTER.

We have a Wii but all of us like the Kinect better, and you don't have to worry about buying all the different controllers for the different games. The only thing is that there is limited games out now, but it just came out so I am sure that will change. Just a thought as I think they are around the same price.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
We looked at the Kinect, but you need the 4GB Xbox for it to work. A general XBox 360 is not compatible. That is what we have. I'm not going to go out and buy a whole new Xbox system just for the capatablities when we already have that similar system. Would be kind of a waste in my mind.

I am going to wait for Black Friday to get games and accessories, but nobody is selling a Wii bundle at a decent price so I am going to pick up the bundle at Target before next weekend. Walmart has a red one on Black Friday, and I don't want red, and it's actually not much of a savings either.

Animal Crossings...gotta check out that one. Same with Super Mario stuff and Family Game Night.

Thanks for the help! Keep the help coming please. biggrin.gif

bluebear replied: There is a new Wii game called Flingsmash that just came out, $50 but it has another controller. Looks like it's aimed towards little kids.

The red Wii has everything a regular Wii has, it just has Super Mario Bros Wii instead of Wii Sports resort.

moped replied: Yep you need at least 2 controllers

MarioKart and/or mario Bros

Wii resort is good

If you get wii sports you get a controller included I think

That is a good start for sure!

You guys will have a great time with it!

coasterqueen replied: I don't know about for boys, but my girls and I LOVE LOVE the Just Dance game for Wii. All of Kylie's friends loved it too when they came over for a sleepover. There is also Just Dance for kids and Just Dance 2 out now. I didn't like a lot of the songs for Just Dance 2, so I think I'm getting the girls the Just Dance for Kids and the regular Just Dance as part of our family gift. I thought it was a LOT of fun.

We also like Carnival Games thumb.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied: The bundle (black console) I am getting has 1 remote (the censored one for motion sensored games), 1 regular remote, Wii Sports, and Wii Sports Resort. biggrin.gif

I wish the black one came with Mario Cart. I wouldn't mind getting the red bundle, but I really do not want red. It will stick out like a sore thumb in my living room and I don't want that. I know...picky picky. laugh.gif

Flingsmash...will have to look that one up. Sounds fun!

msoulz replied: Super Mario World - a bit of a flashback for the older crowd but still fun for the younger ones too!

my2monkeyboys replied: We have Super Mario Brothers, and LOVE it, along with the Resort and Sports game... we have Monopoly, too .. very fun on the Wii! Check out games at Kohl's too. They have a shelf of them near the bathrooms and most of the time they're only about $20-30.
You will love the Wii - it's so very fun!!

boyohboyohboy replied: we love animal crossing and mario cart.
I have wii fit that the kids enjoy too. carnival games all the kids play even andrew..
we play wii sports alot too.
we are big wii bowlers.
The kids do the star wars lego games, and its nice since its not violent, when the character hit each other with the light saber, the blocks just break away...
that is calebs favorite.
if you have wifi, the kids can race other people in the real world in mario cart.
we have 4 controlers, and we could not live without the charger...I cant stand batteries.
there are a lot of lego games, batman, starwars, indiana jones, I assume they are all pretty much the same.

Our Lil' Family replied: You actually don't need a steering wheel for Mario Kart, we have one and Thomas prefers to play without it.
The Lego games are good too, Batman, Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the ones I can think of right now.
Thomas also has Hot Wheels Battle Force 5, Ben 10, Super Mario (big hit with Tim and Thomas both).

I'm still looking for a game I'd like.

stella6979 replied: I agree about the charger. It is a must! I don't really have any suggestions for games as we mostly play baseball or bowling but if you have a Gamestop near you they sell tons of used games for $10.00.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
YES, we have two Game Stops! biggrin.gif Great idea. I do try and get our games used when we can.

Tanner LOVES the Lego games...he has quite a few of them for his DS.

Looks like Animal Crossing is a huge hit with a lot of people, along with the Mario games. I love me some Mario! biggrin.gif I will have to check out the Carnival Games one, as Aiden isn't use to this kind of thing so it would be nice to have a few things he can do to start out with.

I would like to get as many 'active' games as possible, over the non physical games because we do already have the Xbox and quite a few games for that.

What does the remote charger look like? Is it something you plug into the wall then it charges the batteries for you using rechargables? Troy has something like that for his Xbox remotes.

bluebear replied: I have this charger:
http://accstation.com/gninwiixtc07.html

I have Animal Crossing. I got really addicted to it and played it every day for over a year. Donkey Kong Country Returns is coming out on the 21st, that game is also good.
Mario Kart does not come with the red system. Super Mario Bros. Wii comes with the red one.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: my kids love Animal Crossing and wii fit games. its a toss up which one gets used more

coasterqueen replied: We have a charger and absolutely LOVE it. Ours is flat and you just lay the remotes on it. It plugs into the wall.

MommyToAshley replied:
thumb.gif Yes, agreed, the charger is a must have.

Calimama replied:
Big Lots (I don't know if you have one near you) has Wii games for $10 usually too.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
The nearest Big Lots to us is about an hour away. sad.gif

Ah well. I plan on hitting the Black Friday sales all day so I am bound to find some good stuff somewhere.

Thanks for everyone's help! I will get the charger too!

boyohboyohboy replied: I was thinking that our youngest one also really like diego..its very interactive and he can actually follow the directions and run the game...he started that at about 2 1/2.
Its really good exercise...but if your boys are like mine (and I think they are!) they jump all around with these games anyway...even the lego ones.

Maddie&EthansMom replied: We were thinking about doing this very thing for Christmas and were really excited. When we mentioned it to the kids they said NO--they don't want a Wii! We tried to get one last year, too, but they just aren't interested. tongue.gif

And they've played on them before--all of their friends have them. But we aren't really a video game playing family. Maddie had rather have board games.

Anyway--all of that to say--I'm no help! laugh.gif

coasterqueen replied:
Aimee,

Our kids are really the same. They will play card games and board games all day, but electronic games, not so much. They get them out every so often, play for 1/2 hour and then they are done. Now the one Wii Just Dance game the girls had a lot of fun with, but when they had friends over, that's it. Mine don't even play the DS's they have. growl.gif Waste of money.

Do you have a lot of board games, if not get more! I'm inclined in the winter, especially, to get lots of board games, crafts, etc that we can do as a family and my kids LOVE that.

Boo&BugsMom replied: We do board games as well. Both boys usually get about 3 board games every Christmas. With that said, I don't want to get the same board games for the Wii that we already have either. If we have the board game, why get the video game, is my line of thinking. Although some board games on the Wii I am sure are very fun, I also want to be practical about things that I buy and not waste a bunch of money. I enjoy the time we get sitting around the kitchen table as a a family, playing a great traditional board game.

Tanner has been begging for a Wii since they first came out...how ever long that is. We never could afford it until this year. Tanner is my video game techy kid. He has a DS that he plays on all the time, and he plays the XBox with Troy. Aiden is inbetween...he can take them or leave them. Whevener Tanner is playing something though, Aiden automatically wants to play it too. So, I have a feeling once he sees Tanner playing the Wii, that he'll want to join in too. Both boys have tried out the Wii before at friend's houses, and they both are glued to it...so I think it will be a good investment for our family. biggrin.gif

I checked out that Flingsmash game...looks SO MUCH FUN! I am waiting for a Target coupon to come in the mail for $20 off the system and another coupon for $10 off a game and probably use it on a game that comes with an extra remote already.

Thank you everyone for your help! The boys are going to LOVE IT! wub.gif

bluebear replied: I'd get it now or get it on ebay or somewhere because in 1 week there will be none left!

Boo&BugsMom replied: Sunday...that is when Target will have a $20 off coupon out. wink.gif
