Bryan was in the hospital

redplaydoh wrote: Bryan started running 103+ temp Thursday and stopped eating and drinking. As hard as I tried to get something into him he would just throw up. We took him to the doctor on Saturday and they did some type of a blood test called CRP that tests for a protein that is present if there is a virus or bacteria in his blood. The normal for him should be around 8 and the machine at the doctor's office kept giving them an error message. They called the manufacturer of the machine and the error message is for when the number is higher than their limit which was 160. So the doctor sent us to the Children's Hospital in Aarau. There they weighed him and he lost 2.4 kilograms (2.2 lbs is 1 kilogram). They did blood cultures and several other blood tests, put an IV in him and stuck us in isolation.

He's still SO sick... poor guy. He's miserable to say the least. They took the infusion away Sunday night and we MADE him drink so we could go home. He still doesn't want to eat much or drink much but he's keeping stuff down when he does. He had a semi-solid poop yesterday which was exciting... if he would've had diarrhea again they would've kept him another night. After we got home he had two more episodes of diarrhea. I'm glad his little body saved it for when we were home!
They still don't know what it is, nor where it is, and probably won't know the answer to that. They did blood cultures, stool cultures, urine cultures, throat cultures and I'm sure many tests I don't know about as much blood as they took from the little guy. It seems to be viral and not bacterial although his white cell count was up a little, just not enough to warrant antibiotics. So far all the rest of it has come back normal. So we're just waiting to see when he gets better.
If he's not better in 3 days we have to take him in for further testing... what I don't know, because he seems to have had every test under the sun now.
It's so sad to see him weak and not himself, and he's SO skinny... he didn't have weight to lose in the first place. Before we left they weighed him and he is 26.4 pounds and is 2 1/2 years old!!! He's down from around 33 pounds and he was skinny then!
It was interesting that the doctor that saw him was American and practicing here. She's from Boston. I asked her why she was here and she said it was much easier that she doesn't have to pay huge malpractice insurance bills, and she can treat the patients how they need to be treated without the insurance companies coming back and telling her she's prescribing medications that are too expensive. She was telling me how in the US the doctors are told by the insurance companies how to treat and what to prescribe and so much of it has been taken away from them. This is sad because she seems like a wonderful doctor and holds the Chief of Pediatrics position so she must be.
I'm still so worried about him. A mother KNOWS when her kids are sick and Bryan is SICK.

Bryan showing off his IV... he was so sick he didn't even cry when getting it put in.
