Looks like Mattel is getting ready to announce yet another recall for a toy manufactured at a Chinese factory due to excessive levels of lead!
It really makes me wonder how many toys have just 'snuck by'... the toys that are supposedly safe because they were bought before May 1st... I'm not so sure I buy that anymore. I'm just about ready to toss Diego in the trash
I have a feeling they are going to be losing a lot of business from this. I saw a bunch of Dora/Diego/Sesame street toys in Big Lots today and my first instinct was to run away.
Calimama replied: Again!? Didn't they just have a recall? Ugh. TFS!
MoonMama replied:
Thanks for posting.
ZandersMama replied: I'm just going to stop the kids from playing with anything, give them pots and spoons.
gr33n3y3z replied: good idea
gr33n3y3z replied: It doesnt matter the Chinese factory just got caught again and they will continue to do so for as long as they make toys.
The best way to hit Mattel dont buy their toys Just as long as ppl. keep buying them they will continue to put lead in them .....that what keeps the cost down having it in Chinese factory in another country paying sweat shop prices to the employees and buying the lead based paints from the Chinese
I say move the Factory to America and give the americans the jobs
Hillbilly Housewife replied: 'Tis why I like to buy Canadian made merchandise.
gr33n3y3z replied: when I can
jcc64 replied: As someone who is now not only without a job but without a career as a direct result of Chinese labor and manufacturing practices, I certainly have alot of opinions about all of these recalls. My message to each and everyone of us is this: There is a reason they can do everything cheaper than we can- actually, alot of reasons. Not only are they willing to exploit the physical and mental well being of their own workers, some of them children, but they have no problem compromising the integrity of the products they are selling. They bank on not getting caught, and most of the time, they don't. These few incidents are the tip of the iceberg, believe me. I worked in textiles, and by now, virtually all textiles sold by "American" companies are now being manufactured in China. When we sent a pattern over there, with exact design specifications about fiber content and quality, it is far from certain that what we got back is what we asked for. In addition, it is standard practice that the factories would blatantly steal our patterns, manufacture a cheap knockoff, and sell it as their own in some other part of the world. Occasionally, the stuff accidentally winds up back over here. I was recently in a Target, when I saw one of my best selling patterns on lawn furniture- altered just enough so I knew someone had messed with it, but it was absolutely my artwork. My company, now driven out of business by cheap Chinese imports, is obviously not in a position to sue, and so someone over there is making lots of money on my unemployed back.
So, we all like our cheap prices at Walmart and Target, etc. But remember what it's cost us as a country. If you want to buy American or Canadian, be prepared to pay more. Most people or company buyers aren't willing to do that. But they don't want to think about the big picture. And for that, we can't blame the Chinese. They're doing what's best for their own economy. We, on the other hand, are devouring our middle class. Ok, I'm ranting, I'll stop now.
punkeemunkee'smom replied: I honestly believe that if we were to bring jobs back over here...to our soil that the rise in costs would be offset by the fact that more people would have better jobs and be earning a fair wage.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I think so too. And I agree with everyone else as to what they said as well. I'm going to go look at the list now. I better not see anything that Tanner has on there.
Kentuckychick replied: It's really difficult. We own so many fisherprice things (along with other things manufactured in China I'm sure) starting from when my parents were children things that Connor plays with even now and we love them all!
In the last year since Caydence was born I've made a couple of rather large purchases for our home including the FP jumperoo and infant to toddler rocker and I wouldn't even think about going and throwing those in the trash... but I do worry.
I worry more about the toys listed in those recalls that we do have that weren't sold in the time frame. Fisherprice is apparently offering to test any toys that parents are concerned about but still...
I know we've discussed it with Nichole (my best friend/Connor and Caydee's mom) and have decided that when my mom takes Caydence for her one year appointment on the 28th Nichole wants her tested for lead. It's just made us all nervous.
What made me so nervous about those toys yesterday in Big Lots is that I swear some of them were from that list. It makes me wonder what FP is really doing. And what stores are really doing. After seeing nearly all of the toys still on targets clearance shelves days after the recall and then this I wonder how well the last recall was truly handled and if those toys are still being sold...

There's the actual mattel recall link for anyone who's interested. I was amazed when I saw the news that they are recalling 9 MILLION toys this time. But it appears the only toy they're recalling for lead is the Pixar diecast of Sarge which once again Connor has and again we're left with the issue that he has all the others and it makes us wonder...
The other recalls were for magnets again with the polly pockets and some batman toys and a barbie. This concerns me a little less than the lead paint but is still highly annoying because I know this is not the first recall they've had of that and makes me wonder why the heck they didn't stop putting the magnets in after the first one!?!?
Yeah... a mattel boycott is sounding better and better with each passing minute.
BAC'sMom replied: Thanks for that update
holley79 replied: Thank goodness again nothing on the recall list Annika has. It's very scary though.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Jeanne, have you considered sending stuff in to Ikea? I just received their newest catalogue, and they have their designers displayed all over the place. Well the designers' artwork, not them.
jcc64 replied: Don't you just LOVE Ikea?? I don't know where their textiles come from- I'd like to check into that. From a purely style perspective- their stuff is great looking. But I worry when they're selling fabric for $3/yd- I can't imagine it was European made for that price?
