Bilingual?

MyLuvBugs wrote: Who here is bilingual? I know it's a strange question, but I was just sitting here watching Little House New Beginning, and this guy just broke out yammering in Chinese. I thought...THAT IS SO COOL!! smile.gif

I soooooo wish that could speak German and Spanish fluently. It's such a gift to be able to communicate in several different languages. smile.gif

Celestrina replied: I wish I were too. A friend of mine has a degree in French and says when she has kids she will teach them French as well.

MyLuvBugs replied: That's so cool. I only know bits and pieces of German and Spanish. I'm trying to teach Lorelei the stuff I know, but who knows....

ammommy replied: I understand most of Ukranian, but can't speak it anymore. I know about as much Spanish as a 3yo child, does that count? laugh.gif

Hillbilly Housewife replied: I speak (and read and write) fluent english and french, as does DH. My kids speak and understand both as well. I took some german and spanish in high school, though I understand it (spoken or written) better than I can speak it, my kids are learning spanish through Dora and Sesame street... and they will take spanish in school as well.

biggrin.gif

MamaJAM replied: We use both English and Hebrew in our house.

sunrosejenn replied: English is my second language. I can understand German but can't speak it well anymore as I don't know how to make a sentence.

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
With a name like Jeannette, I will assume your first language is French??

please correct me if I'm assuming wrong... unsure.gif

MommyToAshley replied: I'm not, but I think Ashley is going to be. laugh.gif She can count to 10 in Spanish, knows her numbers and most of the alphabet, can sing Merry Christmas and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and knows about 20 other words so far in Spanish. I think it's great, but she is going to have to teach me so that I know what she is saying. rolling_smile.gif

PhiMuMommy replied: i took 5 years of spanish and can read and hear it very well.. writing and speaking it i'm only so so.. i don't understand all the different grammer stuff..lol..

MyLuvBugs replied:
WOW!! That's awesome. That's a language I'd like to learn also (Hebrew). It's so cool hearing people speak it.

MyLuvBugs replied: Have any of you purchased the Baby Einstein Langauge Nursery? They use over 20 different languages on it. It's pretty sweet! My only fear is that Lorelei will start learning languages that I don't know, and start saying things to me that aren't nice when she gets older. lol laugh.gif She'll probably do that anyway, but I'd like to understand what I'm being called. lol laugh.gif

MommyofTwins replied: Well, I'm in the process of learning Japanese. From a friend. And as for Spanish...oh good gravy...I can remember those days...I hated it. All, I can do is conjugate verbs and irregular verbs and say a few words/phrase/sentences and numbers and colors.

to conjugate is like-

Jugar- to play

Yo Juego

Tu Jeugas

El/Ella/Usted Juega

Nosotras Juegamos

Vosotros Juegais

Ellas/Ellos/Ustedes Juegan

Probably innacurate but it's been years

My3LilMonkeys replied: I took 5 years of Spanish, can understand/read it very well and speak/write it mediocre.

I know certain key phrases in German and French - ones I learned from friends in HS - May I please have your pants, I am a jelly doughnut, stupid useless stuff that we thought was funny laugh.gif .

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
I know curse words in like 10 different languiages... but i didn't think those counted!!! muah ha ha!!!!

MyLuvBugs replied:
It's funny how those are the first words kids like to learn in other langauges. lol laugh.gif

TsurugiButterfly replied: Totally! When I was in high school I made a hobby out of learning curse words in other languages.

CosmetologyMommy replied: my dh is mexican and my MIL does not speak english even though she has lived here for over 30 years. I am going to let Aidan decide when he is older if he wants to speak spanish, but I am not going to have my dh speak it to him as a baby.

My2Beauties replied: I used to be pretty fluent in spanish and french, I took Spanish for 6 years, 1 year in college and then French for 8 years, at times in middle and high school I was taking both, my high school was really big into international studies. But beacuse I didn't speak it everyday I forget a lot of it. My grandma's husband (he is deceased now, he was my dad's stepdad obviously) was Mexican, I called him Papa Pete, his name was Pedro I used to speak spanish to him. I miss him! sad.gif

MamaJAM replied:
I can honestly say - it's NOT easy learning Hebrew as an adult! I work hard and my conversational Hebrew still has a long way to go - though my prayers, etc are great (mostly because I memorized it all). I'm still working on reading writing - but making progress.

My girls, on the other hand, are AWESOME (but they attend a Jewish school and half their days are spent entirely working with Hebrew). _They_ can hold complete and in-depth conversations in Hebrew (I can understand most of what they say to each other). The boys are coming along with their prayers as well....until school when they'll learn it all.

jacobsmama replied: The OBGYN that I work for is quite diverse..The physician I work for can speak hebrew and 2 of the girls I work with are fluent in Spanish. It is great for our patients but like them I would love to be able to communicate with them that way!! It is awesome. wub.gif

maestra replied: I speak fluent (not to be confused with perfect- I'm not!) Spanish. I can write/read about as well as I talk. But I have to write in Spanish once a week and used to teach children to read and write in Spanish until they passed the law here that banned Spanish bilingual education for Spanish speakers wacko.gif . Now I can only teach them in English, instead of both like I used to.
