Bad Habit! - scares me so much!
MichaelsMommy wrote: Recently my baby has started to pull things over his face whenever he has a chance to. If he has a baby blanket by him, he'll pull it over his face... If I put him on my bed, he'll grab for the comforter and pull it over his face - even if he as a bib on - if he's laying down he pulls it up over his face. This weekend we were on a drive and i saw him trying to bury it in his jacket. Why does he do this? Do any of your babies do this? It's really making me crazy. I know I'm past the major age for sids, but this still has me on edge like you wouldn't believe. It's like I can't take my eyes off of him!
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Matt does this too and has since he was about Michael's age. He loves it, it's the *where's matt* game, if we pull the blanket, bib, washcloth, whatever down and say there you are he will crack up. Both of my kids could play this game all day.
MommyToAshley replied: Ashley never did this, but I thought maybe you could make sure that he always has one of those thin baby blankets with the holes in it. If he is going to do that, I think that would be a little safer. It would make me nervous too, although I am sure there are lots of babies that do that for comfort.
loveydad replied: yep. That's why I'm glad they all have crocheted blankies with lots of holes in em.
ediep replied: yup, Jason did this and he still does! He always puts his blankey over his face, I guess he likes the feel of it. I used a blanket with holes for a long time.
smullin replied: My nephew does this. He likes the feeling of everything and he has learned if he pulls it close he can feel it better. I would watch him but I wouldn't worry to much. Michael does this and we try to stop him but sometimes we just lay the blanket over his face because he will sleep better with it over. Just watch him when it is over his face so you know. Is he big enough to move around by himself ?Roll over ? If he is then he will move if he needs to blanket or something off after he pulls up on him. That is Michael does. Sometimes you just can't stop them but the bigger he gets he will problay quit and start on something else to worry about.
Sarah 23 weeks, five days Sammy is on the way and kicking !
Hillbilly Housewife replied: My kiddoes did that too.... they have crocheted blakets too!!
MichaelsMommy replied: Glad to know he's not the only one. I do have a few of the crocheted blankets.. but they are not all I use. I have others that are light and I'm sure are not smothering him- it just makes me crazy that he's always doing it. I think because the ped told me when he was itty bitty not to put him in a situation where things would cup or cover his face which is exactly what he keeps doing to himself. He is pretty mobile - he rolls and can lift up on his arms and turn his head.. I just worry that the damage is being done before he moves or something - or if it would build up after so many times of doing it and cause harm. I always try to keep an eye on it, but lately it seems nothing can get close to his face without him wanting to cover up with it. After I wrote this last night he was taking the sleeve of the sweatshirt I was wearing and covering his nose/mouth with it. I guess it is maybe he likes the way it feels? I hope he gets past this soon before I end up with a nervous breakdown lol
Thanks for the replies.
chloe&tysmommy replied: hey, maybe it's a boy thing
My little guy does this when he's tired...he usually puts his receiving blanket ( a nice thin one) over his face to sleep. I wait until he's sleeping and put a crocheted blanket with huge holes to cover him up with. I am still paranoid to this day!!! I even get up in the middle of the night just to check on him
so no, you are not alone
Jordon and Lisa replied: That is Parkers favorite game.
The only three times he's put himself to sleep (boy, is that a whole 'nother thread) were when we let him him a thin blanket to play with, which he talked to and put over his face.
He also loves to have us pull it a way real fast, and then cover him back up. Early 'peek-a-boo' I guess.
The crochet blankets are a good idea, and very thin, breathable receiving blankets.
He is definetly not the only one!
kaitlynsmom replied: Kaitlyn used to do the same thing and it freked me out! Now she hugs her blanket instead of having it over her face but sometimes I go in to check on her and she has burried her face into the bumpers on the cot.
moped replied: Jack does that with everything............for bedtime he is in a bag thingy and no blankets in his crib....................I just don't want the added stress of thinking he is throwing everyhting over his face at bedtime.....but he thinks it is pretty funny when his playing. No worries
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: Wil doesn't do this that much. I've caught him maybe twice, but it's usually when he's wide awake and playing. He sees me watching him and that gets him going.
I suggest using one of those Sleep Sacs and no blanket when he sleeps. You can buy them at Babies R Us. This is why I call Wil my little sweet pea...he looks like Sweet Pea from Popeye when he's wearing one. Very cute!!
