Are there any shows you watched as a kid - that you wouldn't let your kid(s) watch?
Celestrina wrote: I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I don't remember seeing a similar thread.
Some shows we watched might have content considered inappropriate by today's standards. For example, racial stereotypes (the Africian-American maid in Tom & Jerry) and the treatment and stereotypes of women (Pepe le Pew locking female characters in a room or women rarely having a job). Another one that is commonly used is the depiction of characters with speech impediments being less intellegent.
Yes, many of today's shows I would not want DS to watch and are HIGHLY inappropriate. But are there shows you would not want your kids to watch that you did when you were their age?
Crystalina replied: I don't mind my kids watching some of the actual shows (not meaning the cartoons). For instance Different Strokes. There is a lot of racial type things going on on that show. I think it teaches them how far people have come over the years. We don't use certain words anymore and attitudes have changed.
On the other side of things as far as the racial thing goes. I hate how other people think they think they know how you think ( did you get all that?). I absolutely LOVE "Mami" (kind of like the maid from Tom and Jerry). It started with Gone With the Wind for me. She was a tough cookie. I was also a big collector of Mami dolls and cookie jars until one day a friend let me know it "wasn't right". I got rid of it all and regret it now. I wanted to be "PC" but I don't think I was being anything but a collector. Wow, a smidge off topic. Sorry. I regress.
ZandersMama replied: my dad was a bit weird and would get me to sit down and watch big time horrer movies with him when i was very young.(4-5) so i wont be doing that, but other then that there isnt much really. Cailou because i cant stand him
mckayleesmom replied: I watched scary movies from the time I was born too...I have to admit I'm bad about scensoring what the kids watch. Usually they just watch Nick or Cartoon network.
On a funnier note. I didn't realize that sometimes at night on cartoon network adult type cartoons come on. Mckaylee was camping out in the living room one night and I was in bed. I got up to go get something to drink and I realized she was watching Robot Chicken . Usually Mckaylee comes and gets me to change the channel when an adult cartoon comes on. I told her that she needed to change the channel because that cartoon was too grown up for her and she replied "I know mom, but don't worry, I won't repeat any of it"...
Danalana replied: I was allowed to watch really scary movies, too, at a very young age. We won't be doing that.
Celestrina replied: Even I won't watch some of those shows (Robot Chicken, Assy McGee, and many others) because of the content.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I can't think of any really. My parents were pretty good about monitoring though. At this age (5-6, Tanner's age) he really isn't going to get the sterotypes unless we ourselves make it an issue, and to me it's not. When I watched Tom and Jerry as a kid I just thought the lady was the person who lived there/owner of the house. No need, IMO, to dig deeper. A lot of times I don't think kids pick up on those things unless we adults make it a big deal. If we don't make it a big deal, then it wont be. JMO.
Danalana replied: I agree! I loved Tom & Jerry...it was one of my faves, and I never thought she was a maid either. I just thought she was the person who lived in the house. We can make just about anything bad if we try really hard I watched cartoons, Diff'rent Strokes, Gimme a Break, The Facts of Life, and stuff like that. I wouldn't have a problem with my kids watching any of that.
Boo&BugsMom replied: I LOVED Gimme A Break!!! All those shows are tame compared to some of the ones on tv now a days. I think I'd let my kids watch those ones over many of the newer ones we have around!
My2Beauties replied: Anyone remember the show about the little girl who was actually a robot, I loved that show. There aren't too many that I wouldn't let my kids watch. You know though now that I'm older I seriously wonder Smurfette was the only female smurf and there were baby Smurfs on there, who was the dad?
Boo&BugsMom replied: SMALL WONDER!!!
grapfruit replied: I didn't know she was the maid! Guess I'm dense. I thought she was the owner too.
My3LilMonkeys replied: I'd be a little more selective in what age I started letting my kids watch adult shows, but that's about it. I watched the Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time when I was in 2nd grade (so probably about 9 years old) and while I didn't understand quite all of the sexual references in the movie, I understood much more than I think a 9 yr old should be watching.
Celestrina replied: I didn't see that until I was 19!
Danalana replied: I've never seen it!
mckayleesmom replied: I Loved SMALL WONDER and PUNKY BREWSTER (Punky power!!!)
Danalana replied: Punky Brewster! Yes, I loved that
stella6979 replied: OMG, I LOVED Small Wonder! Aside from Punky Brewster, it was my all time fav. I also love Diff'rnt Strokes and watch the reruns every morning.
Danalana replied: What channel are the reruns on????????? Tell me, por favor!
stella6979 replied: They are on every morning at 9:00 and 9:30 on BET.
Danalana replied: Ooooooh, I love you!
