Any Mac users? - PC vs MAC
luvmykids wrote: I'm trying to decide on a Mac or not, I've been told they are much less prone to viruses/spyware/etc since most of those are written for PC's. Plus I like their compact hard drives. Any opinions?
jcc64 replied: Genuine Mac fanatics over here. It's absolutely true that Macs are virtually virus free and incredibly user friendly. We have 2 PCs and 2 Macs, and the PCs have chronic viruses, while I have yet to have one directed at either Mac in the 10+yrs we've had them. Furthermore, the new Macs have the ability to run on either the Mac operating system (OS10) or Windows. Pretty handy innovation. I say go for it- you absolutely won't regret it.
redchief replied: We have all pc's here, mainly because of work and what have you (software titles for macs are a little on the slight side). Macs are much less prone to viruses though. The OS is simpler and therefore not nearly as prone to security holes as the Window-Monsters.
I would have a mac. It's getting more and more possible too, though I see no reason to have a computer with two OS on it, the new macs will either run Apple-OS or Windows.
DVFlyer replied: We have both Macs and PC's at work and at home. I'd take the Mac because I'm more familiar with them. More and more, they seem very similar to me though. I think it comes down to what you're used to. Both have their strengths and weeknesses.
I can tell you from experience that I have never had a virus on my Mac, but my wife got one on her PC. Luckily, it was not a bad one. She knows not to download anything or open attachments with certain file type extensions etc, though. I have had one Mac hard drive go bad and my wife's PC just decided not to work one day.
Split decision, I guess.
MommyToAshley replied: It depends on what you want to do with your computer. We have both Macs and PCs. I prefer the PC just because I am used to it and I do a lot of gaming. Ashley on the other hand, prefers the Mac.
In the older days, Macs were geared more towards graphic design and you were limited on the software you could buy for the Mac. But, as Jeanne has already said the new Macs now run both the Mac OS and Windows.
luvmykids replied: I play a lot of games to, in what way does a Mac limit that, in the software? How about online gaming?
jcc64 replied: Basically, if you get one of the new Macs that can run Windows, then the issue of software limitations is null and void. Whatever games you can play on a PC, you will be able to also run on a Mac.
ashtonsmama replied: Ryan has a Powerbook, and he loves it. I use it occasionally, but I prefer the PC for some reason...it's just too big of a switch for me to go back and forth I guess.
MommyToAshley replied: I am not sure what kind of gaming you do? The software won't be a problem with the new Macs, but there seem to be better video cards available for the PC that are made specifically for gaming. But, again this would depend on what kind of games you run.
kersteegirl620 replied: I always used PC's before I met my DH. When we met he had a Mac Powerbook and I had a PC laptop. My laptop was always freezing up and I constantly had to restart it. I started using his Mac more often and it was weird to me at first because I had to get used to it, but I really started to love it! I got rid of my laptop and now we have a Mac mini. We never have to restart this thing from it freezing up. Our mac mini had been up and running for 32 days before we had a thunderstorm and the power went out. My mom has a Imac and she uses IMovie to scan in pictures and make slideshows with music and stuff. She makes the cutest videos and it is so easy to do! (If my mom can do it, anyone can do it). LOL. So, in my opinion, Macs are way better than PC's and I would never buy anything else. On top of that, my DH would kill me if I ever bought a PC.
MommyToAshley replied: She's got a point there. The Mac has some neat things like ILife (Has Iphoto, IDVD, etc). They're easy and fun to use. There are some comparable products for the PC too, but the Mac programs seem so easy to use. Ashley likes ITunes ... she plays her own music whenever she wants. LOL!
luvmykids replied: Thanks, all! I think I'm leaning more and more towards a Mac, this is my 3rd PC in 5 years because they just have trouble of one kind or another. And I don't open weird emails or anything, they just seem to conk out on me around the one year mark.
