Amniocentesis..did you have one?
jakesmommy08 wrote: Im trying to remember if i had one with my first son and i dont think i did. I think we opted not to do it. I was just wondering......how many of you did it?
boyohboyohboy replied: I had an amnio because they wanted to take the baby at 36 weeks and wanted to be sure that his lungs were ready.
jakesmommy08 replied: well i dont really remember all that much about it.....off the top of my head i know they put a needle in you and take out some fluid......and that it can increase your risk for losing the baby, i think my sons dr. was gonna do it at like 20 weeks or something.......and at the point even if there was something wrong with him it would change my mind on having him.....so i guess my question is...........am i selfish for not doing it?????????
mummy2girls replied: I had one done with Jenna. I had taken the AFP test and it showed possible for spina bifada. Me and jennas dad said that when we go in for the ultrasound that if they are not sure if the baby has it or not to have it done. and we ended up having it done. Me and marcus opted to not have the AFP test for this pregnancy but everything on the ultrasound showed normal:)
I wouldnt get the amnio unless you really need it done. It can cause miscarriage...
mom21kid2dogs replied: No. We refused all testing except US. AFP are more ofen wrong than right. Amnio has a pretty good risk of m/c associated with it so we didn't do that either.
msoulz replied: Ditto.
BAC'sMom replied: I was offered an Amnio after my AFP tests came back high for Downs Syndrome with my oldest son. But like Cheryl mentioned an Amnio has a pretty good risk of miscarriage associated with it. We had already had a miscarriage so we opted out. I refused any AFP tests with the next 2 PG’s.
stella6979 replied: Nope.
lisar replied: I never had one done either.
jakesmommy08 replied: OK im still trying to get use to all your lingo on here..........whats the AFP test? Im not sure if i ever had that done with my son........
mom21kid2dogs replied: Alpha Fetal Protien (AFP)screen is offered (usually pushed IMO) to women in the late first trimester of pregnancy. It's supposed to be an indicator of a number of fetal abnormalities from spina bifida to down syndrome. Unless you know the second you got pregnant (literally) it is frequently incorrect as the protien it is measuring is very specific and based on exact date of conception. For almost all of us, the real "date" is elusive, thus making the screening tool largely ineffective. Because the ultrasounds are so incredible these days, they give you a much clearer picture of your fetus' health than this screening tool.
sc_mom2five replied: I never did because of the m/c risks. It was never something I needed to have done anyways but even if it had been I would not have taken the risk.
youngmomofone replied: Nope, didn't have a reason to.
mckayleesmom replied: Nope...I guess I'm a little misinformed though because I always assumed they were for people that were 1. Over the age of 40 or 2. Had tests show the possibility of something wrong. It wasn't even offered to me, but I didn't know they offered it most of the time for every pregnancy.
my2monkeyboys replied: I never did any of the triple screens or amnio with mine. I knew we'd keep them no matter what and decided to just enjoy the pregnancy.
~Roo'sMama~ replied: I don't think I was offered one, either, but I wouldn't have done it even if I was in the high risk group. The risk is just too great. I refused the triple screen too.
mom21kid2dogs replied: I was 41 when I had Oivia but my doctor did not consider amnio routine. I had to sign a paper refusing the AFP screen.
austins mom replied: I had one when I was pregnant. Me and Dh had already decided that it wasnt going to make a diffence in the results. But we wanted to make sure so that we knew how to plan for when he came just in case.
