Alimentum or Nurtrimigen (sp?) anyone???

Boo&BugsMom wrote: We were really hoping to NOT have to go this route with Aiden. When we got home from the hospital, all was well. Then shortly thereafter, it seemed if Aiden was not sleeping or eating, he was screaming and always fussy. I didn't think anything of it because he is such a good sleeper, unlike how Tanner was. Tanner was an extremely colicky baby and we ended putting him on Alimentum as a baby, which actually worked quite well for him, IMO. I saw a night and day difference. Aiden gets into these screaming fits all the time and is inconsolable when they occur (just like Tanner), and last night he was so bad (screamed for about 3 hours) that he pooped himself out so much he totally konked out at about 7pm and didn't wake up to eat next until 1:30am. So, after speaking to hubby about it, he went to Walmart to purchase two cans of the Alimentum formula, which is half the amount of other brands and twice the cost because it's hypoallergenic. wacko.gif . We are hoping we see a difference in him llike we did with Tanner. I guess we were doomed from the start to have colicky babies, since I was a SUPER colicky baby myself and Troy was so colicky that he was put on Valium for the first year of his life...YES...I said Valium!!! blink.gif

Anyone else have to use one of these hypoallergenic formulas? Did it work for you?

lovemy2 replied: Welcome to the world of Steak and Lobster Diet for your newborn!!!!!!!!!!! Dylan has been on it since he was about 4 weeks old and is STILL on it - at 4 1/2 months!!!!!!!!!!!! But yes I saw a night and day difference with him - it quieted his tummy down considerably which in turn quieted him down considerably!! rolling_smile.gif But it did take about a full week before we started to see a difference.

My issue now is trying to get him back on Soy....I am hoping once we through all the first foods (we have peas left puke.gif baby peas are gross) we will give him a week or two and then try again - we have tried two times before with no success- he got really gassy and uncomfortable both times....but we haven't tried in amost two months so....

Boo&BugsMom replied:
You got that right!!! Arg!!! wacko.gif I also forgot how nasty the stuff smelled from when Tanner was a baby. I made a bottle and it brought back all the memories! blink.gif

coasterqueen replied: hug.gif hug.gif I don't know anything about the formula, but I do about colicky babies. I hope whatever you get helps him. hug.gif

boyohboyohboy replied: HI, poor aiden, hope he is feeling better soon. My allergiest just recommended nutramigen to us, and said its the best, but I would say what ever your ped recommends and what ever works really.

Here to hoping you are getting some rest..

amymom replied: Alimentum is what Mary Beth was on for two years. She loved that stuff. Now we found out that she is lactose intollerant and can take almost no lactose, so that was the reason it worked for her.

Yes that stuff smelled yucky! And IMO tasted worse. But MB loved it. Good Luck.

lovemy2 replied:
I believe Alimentum and Nutramigen are the same thing - one is Similac brand and one is Enfamil brand

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: I had Logan on Nutramigen for the first 5 or 6 months then I slowly moved him over to normal Enfamil. Really slowly, it took me nearly 2 months to make the complete switch. But it was truly night and day between the two.

Our Lil' Family replied:
Same here....for reflux!

lovemy2 replied:
How did you do this? Did you mix the two?????? I want to try to get Dylan off it too but wonder if I should put him on regular similac or soy....of course I could ask the Ped too... tongue.gif

Our Lil' Family replied: I mixed the two and each week I'd put one scoop less of Nutramigen.

momofone replied: Can the baby have soy formula? I've heard about the cow's protein upseting the stomach Hope things get better smile.gif

TANNER'S MOM replied: All 3 of my babies had this problem and all 3 had the same formula. It made a difference. The doctor actually recommended it for us. This was years ago as that my babies is 9 and he actually wrote a script for it and it was something our insurance covered. I think now they have probably revamped that. But it did help us with the cost.

I have alot of experience with colicky babies and the screaming hours too. I remember crying with them. I hope it works out for you and you find what you need too. Don't forget to swaddle really good it always helped me.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Right. Just different brands, but both are the same...corn-based and hypoallergenic.

We haven't tried Soy with Aiden, but honestly do not think it will do any good considering what we went through with Tanner so I think I'd be a waste of time. Soy didn't do any good for him, as it wasn't just a milk issue, it was the general colic and protein issue which is present in milk and soy based formulas, which is the same issue we are having with Aiden. It's like dejavu (sp?) all over again. Tanner is all good now and LOVES milk and tolerates it. He was only on it for the first 3 months, after colic is suppose to start subsiding. But for those 3 months...goodness gracious did it ever hurt the checkbook!!! Gosh it worked wonders though.

I was reading about all the signs of colic last night and he's a classic textbook case. Arg!!! The plus side...he does sleep well at night, thank God! Tanner never did because he had his days and nights confused. blink.gif He also likes swaddling. I even have a swaddling blanket for him. He loves his vibrating bouncy too, which helps. It's sad though because whenever he's awake it's like just waiting for that time bomb to go off. It's like he only gives us about 5 minutes of happiness, then the crying begins. It breaks my heart, and like Mel, I often cry with him.

A little update...today he went about an hour without crying while he was awake. He's only been on it for about 24 hours, but I was floored that I could actually do something around the house without him being asleep! Hopefully we're getting there.

Anne Marie...Aiden seems to loves this stuff too, and so did Tanner. I have no idea why because it smells so nasty. They guzzle it down though.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Just another update...Aiden is going to the doctor today. He has had horrible diahreea (totally botched that word up! sp???) all morning and last night. sad.gif

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: Johnny is currently on a trial of Allamentum Ready to Feed because it is the only one on the market that is corn free (along with the dairy and soy) that is basically the last guess as to what could be upsetting his stomach.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Everything is ok. "He's jusy colicky", is what we got. Oh joy! sleep.gif

lovemy2 replied:
hug.gif Pursue it if you think its not 100% what is wrong ..... hug.gif

Hang in there, I have been where you are and I know especially the second time around after I had sooo hoped I would enjoy the early stages of infancy with my new little one I was pretty let down that again I had a miserable baby hug.gif and of course I was worried sick because I KNEW in my gut something wasn't right - not just "colic"......Dylan was a combination of reflux and the milk intolerance - not colic at all.... hug.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
We are going to keep going with the formula, since it did wonders for Tanner. Hopefully it will have some sort of positive effect on him. We'll do a re-evaluation with the doctor next week to see what he thinks. 3-4 months is looking a LONG ways away right now!

Kaitlin'smom replied: hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif just want to send lots of hugs to all those who have babies suffering. hug.gif
