Alec is losing weight

ammommy wrote: and I don't know if I should be concerned. Quick history. Since his 4 weeks checkup, he has been in the 95% or off the charts for weight. At 3 he weighed a whopping 40 pounds and was 39 inches. The kid is solid, not fat (per ped). In the last 2 months, he has dropped 3.5 pounds. I don't know if it's because he's more active and rediscovered his love for veggies ( thumb.gif ) or if I should be concerned. That just seems to be a big drop in a short amount of time. It's nearly 10% of his weight. He also seems a bit off some days. I really can't explain it, but he's just not quite himself if that makes sense.
Do I take him in or keep an eye on his weight for another month or two? DH and I are really torn.

moped replied: Well I would say that if you have any concerns to take him and get him checked out - I am sure everything is fine, but for your peace of mind I would tawk ehim in!

JAYMESMOM replied: The best thing to do would be to watch his eating habits. Children go thru ups and downs in growth spurts. He may be going thru one which will require more calories/nutrients from his body to make his bones, etc. grow. Thus causing him to lose weight. Plus he is probably burning more energy than he is consuming. I would watch him for the next month and see. If you want to make sure he is getting enough nutrition you may want to give him a pediasure or ensure drink every night. That way you know he is getting the proper balance even if he is using up what he has eaten that day. Also remember if he is eating more veggies vs. other higher calorie/fat foods he will lose weight but that is good for him. Veggies are always good.

Don't worry yourself too much. But if you can't wait a month just call his doctor's office. So you can have peace of mind.

jcc64 replied: Probably nothing- but I'd check with the dr to be sure. 10% of his body wt is something I would pay attention to, particularly since you mentioned he seems a little off his game as well. Maybe he's missing some key nutrients- like iron or something? Why speculate- that's what the drs are for.

ediep replied:
I agree! Its probabaly nothing, but worth getting a ped opinion

mammag replied: I also agree! I would at least call and talk to the dr about it. Like Jeanne said, since you think he seems off and it 10% it's something I would want to check with the ped about.

I'm sure he's fine but it will probably ease your mind to give them a call.

ian'smommy replied: There have been times that I called the clinic just to tell them what was going on. If they felt it was worth checking into, then that's what I did... I didn't like to feel like I was overreacting for no reason. So I would call and just tell them the situation. If they feel that it's something that they should check, just to be safe, then go and do that... But if your gut is telling you that something is off, I'd go ahead and take him...
Ian was sleeping real well for about a week or so one time and I was convinced that something was wrong... He had been running a fever off and on as well... Everyone thought I was overreacting... But I brought him in, convinced that something wasn't right and low and behold it turned out he had a throat infection. You just never know. They can't always tell you when something isn't right with them... So if you really feel strongly about it, take him... If you find out it's nothing, then at least you can rest easier...

ian'smommy replied: that last post should read that Ian WASN'T sleeping real well for a week... Sorry... tongue.gif

mammag replied: That reminded me of something else....

For quite some time Kyle, kid I watch, was just a bit "off". His mom & I were both noticing it. Well, one day she looked in his throat and noticed his tonsils were huge. He didn't have a fever, no pain, no other symptoms than just didn't act right. He ended up having to get his tonsils removed. He'll also get ear infections and not complain of any pain. Sometimes they're demeanor can give you a clue that something is wrong when they aren't showing sypmtoms of anything.

ammommy replied: I called the docs office and he wanted to see Alec and weigh him again just to be sure. The weight is the same (give or take a few oz) and our ped talked with us for about 15-20 minutes. We have decided to keep an eye on Alec and come in for another weigh in next month. If he's lost more weight, then we will run blood tests, etc on him. In the mean time, we're keeping up his vitamin.
Thanks for all of the advice.

ian'smommy replied: Glad that there is a plan now... If you feel better about the situation, even better... Godo luck and keep us posted... thumb.gif

Isabelita replied: I agree that is a good idea, and I hope everything is ok with your little guy

gr33n3y3z replied: That was a good idea of calling the Ped.
I hope everything is ok
It just may be a change in eating habbits

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
Hey....

it's probably nothing but a growth spurt - and I'm sure you know:

1-eyes are yellowish
2-blood or mucous in poop, or discoloration (green, black, yellow...etc.)
3-dark circles under eyes
4-darkness of urine

those could all mean an infection of some kind...even if it's just a small one....well the circles under the eyes could mean he's tired too... lol... but if you notice those things, check if it matches when he's less active....it could be a temperature-less fever
