After 7 months - Maple II is gone

CantWait wrote: So you're probably sick of hearing about all our dead fish, but I though in memory of Robbie's second Betta Maple 2 I would post anyway.

Maple II died last night, he looks good, no signs of fungas, raut, or anything of that nature, so I think he was just old.

This makes 3 dead fish in our freezer waiting for bariaul. sad.gif

cameragirl21 replied: i'm so sorry, Marie, fish are so hard to keep, you have no idea what i've gone thru with my saltwater tanks and my koi pond. bettas are also more fragile as far as i know, you may have better luck with goldfish.
maybe you should just get the boys some turtles...they're easy to keep, more fun to watch and play with than fish and they live to be about 10 vs the couple years or so that a fish lives. they're very hardy and as long as you give them what they need they're unlikely to die. i've saved quite a few from near death so i know they're really not hard to keep at all.
either way, hug.gif to you and sorry about all the dead fish. sad.gif

hopefulmomtobe replied: Beta fish and gold fish are very hard to keep alive, imo. I have a 30 gallon aquarium with all the little bubbles and whatnot and have had my fish for years now with no problems. We dont really do much to the tank and only have 5 fish in there, we just keep refilling it with clean water when it gets low and adding chlorine drops when we do. I think it is the whole bubble action giving the fish oxygen that helps, along with plants that provide oxygen.

We tried the whole beta fish thing and my daughter just kept getting upset that the poor fellas died all the time. A turtle is a great idea, you can even get those miniture ones that are so cute. Sorry about your fishy though...I cant believe they are in the freezer...yikes...that creeps me out..but I'm not crazy about fish anyway.

Danalana replied: When I was little, I got goldfish once. The next day, they were all dead sad.gif
I never wanted any after that.

redplaydoh replied: My first fish were these black guppies. Before I went to bed (I was about 5) I folded kleenex into little rectangular "beds" and took each one out, tucked them in and said goodnight to them. I didn't want them to drown while I was sleeping. I woke up the next morning to very dry fish... I was heartbroken. bawling.gif
I hope your burial stops at 3.... poor kid. I remember the pain of losing those fish.

kimberley replied: sad.gif sorry hon. hugs to the kids. hug.gif hug.gif

msoulz replied:
OMG that is the sweetest, saddest little thing . . . blush.gif

redchief replied: We also had terrible luck with Betas. We've had Jack Dempseys for years now, and while they're aggressive and don't take well to other species, they're hearty.

I'm sorry you have to keep them in cold storage for so long. When does the ground finally thaw enough for burial?

CantWait replied:

I'm not sure, this is my first spring planting here. We were posted here years ago, but knowing that we'd be gone a few months after spring, I didn't plant anything. The forecast is calling for 20cm of snow tomorrow, with rain after, so I'm guessing there's still at least another month until the ground is soft.

butting in... i'm sorry for your loss sad.gif
i managed a pet store for 8yrs. bettas are very harty fish. they generally live through most everything. and live for about 3-5yrs. there can be soooo many reason why you lost your fish - temp., over/under feeding, hard/soft water, improper cleaning... i could go on and on. if you plan on continuing the fish thing go to petco or petsmart, they have quarentees on there fish and may be able to help you get things turned around.

good luck with the "services" and with your future tanks happy.gif

redplaydoh replied:

I think the story is funny now, but for years I carried the guilt that I was a fish murderer... I was horrified as a little kid finding crispy fish instead of fish waking up yawning, stretching and wanting to go for a swim in their pool. And I can say that my mom wasn't too happy with me either, we didn't get more fish for a while after that.

CantWait replied:

Oh gosh, that's heart wrenching. sad.gif

Kirstenmumof3 replied: hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif That seem awful strange that 3 of your fish have died in a matter of a month. Poor Tanner, he must feel awful! Maybe get him a hamster or something else other than a fish. hug.gif hug.gif hug.gif
