A cat issue - need some ideas

coasterqueen wrote: I have two unruly cats - one I know pees on everything. dry.gif Haven't proved the other one does. I've wanted to get rid of these cats since we got them - never had difficult cats like these, but I lost in the household vote so now I just have to "deal" the best I can with them. I've taken the one I know pees to the vet, and basically got nothing on her as to why she does this. Anything like a rug, small chair, kids dress-up clothes, etc - she pees on it. Like marking her territory I guess, who knows. SO to minimize the pee situation we keep all doors in the house closed at all times. As you know with kids, though, that rule is hard for them to follow. Plus I think my dogs are opening the doors, yes, seriously. tongue.gif So the cats get in there, I don't find out until a day or so later when the pee dries that the cats were in there - usually the smell clues me in. dry.gif Keeping the doors closed means the thermostat thinks it doesn't have to run the geothermal as much meaning the bedrooms/bathrooms stay colder than the rest of the house. SO the colder rooms is driving me insane and since I can't get rid of the cats any other solutions to them not peeing in the rooms? I even mentioned to Dh about taking the doors off the rooms and putting screen doors, but I seriously don't like that unpleasing look of screen doors. rolleyes.gif He also said it wouldn't take long for the cats to claw through it or the dogs to run through it.

Any solutions would be helpful!!!

DVFlyer replied: No solutions other than what I've read online (cinnamon, vinegar, etc), but pet pee is permanent and nasty.

I don't think I'd keep that/ those cats in my house.

aspenblue1 replied: I know some cats don't like to share a litter box. I also know some cats don't like certain litter no matter how good it is. Some don't like scoopable some don't like clay some have to use the like news paper stuff ect. Cats are so hard to read. I had a male cat that would pee on my clothes when he was upset with me for some reason no clue why but if it was on the floor it was free game. Usually female cats are better. Usaully if it is one certain place they will say to move the litter box over that spot and slowly move it back to where you want it after the cat starts using it. That is a hard one. Have you tried keeping her in the room with her litter box until she start using it?

my2monkeyboys replied: I would pick a room and lock the cats in there, with a little box or 2 (so they won't have a problem sharing) and only let them out to play/love on them. If that doesn't work they'd be outside kitties. No sense in having your whole house become a bathroom.
We used to have a female that did that, but found out it was a urinary tract problem. It wasn't something we could fix though, it was from age. So, we locked her up when we weren't able to keep an eye on her, and let her outside a lot.

coasterqueen replied: Well we've tried everything. We are using the same litter we always were. They have their own box. When she does actually go to the litter box closet, she poops/pees on the floor. growl.gif This morning I go out into the livingroom where I had the laundry basket of socks - starting digging to find a match, and ended up with urine all over my hands. I'm DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif growl.gif DH better find a solution soon if he wants them there, that's all I have to say!

jcc64 replied: I sympathize. I had a female cat that did this many years ago, and I was never able to resolve the problem, tbh. We took her to the vet, no UTI, no underlying medical cause. Changed the litter, got multiple litter boxes, the whole 9 yds. She actually used to pee on top of me while I was sleeping. Talk about a hostile gesture!!! The last straw (as if I needed one after that) came when she peed on my brand new sofa the day it was delivered. I snapped--and believe me, I am a complete softy when it comes to my animals. However, enough was enough, and I turned her into an outdoor cat. I mean, she was always in and out anyway, but she was no longer aloud in the house. We got her a big dog house, filled it with blankets and stuff, and she seemed ok with it. The sad part of the story is that one day she just disappeared, never to return. I did catch a raccoon in her little house, and I can only speculate that she wound up on the wrong side of that fight. We live in the woods and there are all sorts of animals around, I'm sure she met her end that way. I feel awful to this day, but I had babies in the house, and I wasn't gonna turn my house (and myself) into a giant litterbox.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: Ummm... a pack of baby diapers?

dunno.gif

coasterqueen replied: Thanks to everyone who responded. I think we are going to try a few more things before giving up. We are just not ones to give up on animals once we've taken them in our home - they deserve a good life, we chose to give it to them, so we'll go the extra distance and HOPEFULLY we'll find something that works. First we are going to keep Hailey in the bathroom while we are gone, with litterbox/food, and let Sox roam the house free with all doors open and see if he is peeing outside the litterbox on things as well. We know Hailey does it, but knowing if Sox does it too will help us determine what to do next. If Hailey is the only one doing it, if nothing else we do helps her to stop, then she will be the only one who goes back to the APL. We can't make the cats outside cats as they've never known anything other than us and the APL since birth, so they would have no idea how to defend themselves out here in the country. We've had outdoor cats, but they were raised that way from birth so they knew what to do. These two wouldn't and I don't feel that is fair to them. So wish us luck that the few other things we are going to try will work! thumb.gif

DVFlyer replied: Just had another thought...

Is the cat(s) fixed/ spayed/ neutered?

coasterqueen replied:
Yep.

luvbug00 replied: Have ur vet look into bladderr issues, uti and diabeties. (Although cat may not show symtoms
There is always a chance). Hope u can fix this smile.gif

DVFlyer replied:
I'm sorry, the correct answer is "No".

Then I say, "Well, you should get them fixed because that will stop the peeing/ marking".

And you say, "Wow! Thanks! You are my hero!".

coasterqueen replied:
Did that - nothing.

~Roo'sMama~ replied: I had a cat who peed on everything, and I bought this spray at Target that totally got her to stop doing it. I don't know if they sell it anymore - I couldn't find it online. And I don't remember what it was called. But it was something like this stuff from petsmart: Simple Solution Repellent

Our cat Daffy used to walk around the house meowing and then pee on stuff, and I figured it was because he wanted to go outside. Dh didn't want to let him be outside at all (we lived in town) but I decided it was either that or get rid of him because he was peeing all over. I started letting him out whenever he wanted and he totally stopped.
