7'1" gator caught in our backyard today!

kit_kats_mom wrote: There is still bait hanging for that big fella. Hopefully he will take it. I'll feel much more comfortable taking walks in the neighborhood when he's gone. rolling_smile.gif

I'll be posting a video on our youtube page when I'm done editing it. There is a link to that page on my blog. http://www.themagicalmom.blogspot.com/

That would make me feel more comfortable too!

amynicole21 replied: Wait - was it caught or are they still trying to catch it? I'm confused by the title of the post. unsure.gif Crazy!!!

luvmykids replied: ohmy.gif Holy sheep Cary! I didn't realize it was so literally IN YOUR BACKYARD! Dumb question, how do they get there, is the lake fed from an outside source or what?

I love your blog, you're a great writer! thumb.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: Sorry Amy. They caught the 7 foot 1 inch gator today. She's the "small one" that's been here since last fall. The "big one" is that 12-14 footer that was being really aggressive last year. He's still eluding the traps. I really want him gone. He makes me nervous.

Monica, they move from pond to pond. Typically, the females will stay in a pond for awhile and it's the males who travel over land or though the culverts, to breed then they take off again. I'd watched the big male come to our pond last week and mate with this female that they caught today. I'm really suprised that they caught her because she ate a cat or dog last night. We aren't sure what it was but we saw a long furry leg hanging out of her mouth. Could have been a very small deer. I'm suprised she took the bait though. blink.gif

My computer is acting wonky so I wasn't able to add the videos yet but I did add a slideshow to youtube. We got some great video footage though so hopefully I'll get to put that up soon.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: blink.gif Holy cow. I hope they get the big guy too. I know he eluded the traps last year.

msoulz replied: Holy guacamole, it's good to live in Michigan - deer aren't that scary!!!! tongue.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: LOL. They really aren't that bad. Once we get a fence, I won't be terribly worried at all. Normally they swim right away if you get nearby. However, during mating season (April-May) they get a little wierd. The females are bulking up and eating everything in sight and the males are all hopped up on testosterone. They are fighting each other for the ladies and eating more to keep their strength up too. They get really territorial and wander where they aren't wanted (actually, we invaded their land so I'm pretty respectful of that). The big guy has been fed by humans or something because he doesn't have the fear of people that he should have. that's why I want him gone. it's really sad, if people would not feed them or mess with them, they'd be ok.
