3 yr old escapes daycare!
mummy2girls wrote: I was watching the new the other night and a story comes on.. At a adycare by where I live a 3 year old got out and was walking down one of the most busiest streets. This little boy was about to walk into on coming traffic when a bystander jumps out of her car and grabs him by the hood of the coat and pulls him back. She then takes him to a nearby police station. the cops then put him in teh back seat and drive around to see if they notice any daycares near the area he was found. And then they saw it and brought the child back. The mom of the boy was not notified until about an hour and half AFTER he was brought back to the cintre! So the mom is now making a report to child services and will not be bringing him back to the daycare! They think the boy climbed the cubbies to reach the knob to get out !

~Roo'sMama~ replied: Oh my gosh how scary! I can't believe that the center didn't call the mother right away! I wouldn't be bringing my child back there again either.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Wow! How scary. I, as a mother would be very upset myself. As a daycare professional, I know things happen though. However, I don't understand how someone in the room with the child could not see this child was missing or trying to get out!!! I don't know about anyone else, but I would think you'd notice something like a child climbing the cubbies, if not right away, but within a certain amount of time!
mckayleesmom replied: That is sooooo Mckaylee.....I don't know how many times she has used something to get the locks open...The other day her and Russell used a laundry basket to reach the lock that is taller then me.
Kentuckychick replied: Eek, we just had a daycare closed here a few weeks ago for that exact scenerio (only the child didn't walk out into traffic). Yes, as a child development major who's spent lots of time in daycares I can see where "accidents" happen, but I've honestly never been in a daycare where I can see a situation like this occuring. Most of the daycares I've been in have doors that automatically lock so there's no way the child can get out, or the handles are too high for the kids, or they would have to get through both the door and a locked fence before they'd be anywhere near a street. It just seems very odd that a child can "escape" a daycare like that. I guess we'll have to see what comes of it. I know I'd be extremely upset if I were the parent.
TheOaf66 replied: yep gotta love that, they didn't let mom know because they didn't want to get in trouble...nice.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: Hmmm.... it's easy to say...until it happens to you... my middle daughter (2 1/2 at the time) escaped my house... at night... dh was home, putting the baby to bed... she walked all the way down the street to my mom's house, where I was with Zach... so I can see it happening and the provider not notice. Accidents happen...to anyone.
What I DON'T understand, is how the mother was not notified RIGHT AWAY!!!!!!!!
Boo&BugsMom replied: That's very true Rocky, however, in a large daycare facility the children are in a square room usually and most state regulations state a teacher has to be in the room at all times. That is what I don't understand. I don't see how a teacher, if one was in the room, could not have seen this child climb up a set of cubbies and out a door. I do understand things can happen easily regardless though and all people make mistakes, which is why I stated that to begin with.
ETA: this was in a large daycare facility right? That is what I assumed anyway since "daycare" was mentioned and not anything about a provider, persay. Perhaps I'm mistakenly assuming? Someone correct me if I'm wrong please. If it was a daycare provider in her home I can easily understand then how it can happen. Not that is still is "ok", but being a provider myself, I can't be in all corners of the house at one time. But, being in a large daycare facility, I still don't see how this could have happened if people were being responsible enough. Sorry, but after working in them for many years, I just don't.
Hillbilly Housewife replied: I'm assuming it was in a daycare home.
Besides... in a centre, aren't the doors like a double entrance type thing? So there wouldn't even be a knbob to turn, right?
Boo&BugsMom replied: LOL! That's what we both get for assuming I guess.
The doors depend on the center itself. All are different. I would hope that any reputable center though had locks on the doors or some way of keeping the children from opening them. Not sure how this center was set up, but I've never worked in one where the children could have climbed up something and out a door without someone noticing it, even after they got out of the room with that many people working in one place and management being around. Maybe it wasn't set up very safely? I dunno. I know not all are the same and as safe as others, but it just makes me question what the teacher was doing when this was happening.
Jolyn replied: You know it can happen. Here in some areas the centers and daycares cannot lock doors. Soooooooo the kids can open them anytime. I guess the fire marshals want the kids to be able to get out in case of fire. Well how about the fast sneaky ones who run for the door every chance they get because that is where mom and dad left from.
Once i saw a little boy at the grocery store. No more than 2 and a half. It was a dark and rainy night and someone saw him walking down the middle of a road and brought him in the store. Thank God they weren't driving fast. You just never know.
lisar replied: I cant believe they didnt notice him missing. OMG....
mummy2girls replied: no it was in a daycare not a daycare run out of the home...
mummy2girls replied: nope rocky it was in a daycare not a home run dayhome. and yes the knob is way high up and thats why the boy climbed the cubbies to get to it...
Hillbilly Housewife replied: well it's a sad situation nonetheless... but accidents can happen... and I know MY kids are certainly quick, and I only have 3 during the day... I could see it happen with a bunch of kids.... sad...but a reality...
kristy-n-chad replied: How scary! Noah has developed the oh-so-terrifying habit of going out the front door to play with the neighbors toys on the porch. We have to try to remember to slide the chain lock in at all times. Good thing our apartment is small, 98% of the time we are right in the living room when he tries it, but still....
holley79 replied: I would be totally ticked had I not been notified.
