22 yr old question - please help!!! everyone!

ashley219 wrote: Hi, This is a little strange for me. I am not actually a mom. I am 22 years old and I am and have always been very close with my parents. I have never been in trouble and I do well in school and have a full time job. I am currently in a bind and feeling torn and I wanted some input...
I have been in a relationship for 2 years. My parents know him and like him. We just won a free cruise for 4 days and I am not allowed to go because my parents are afraid I'll sleep with him on the trip. I really want to go and am at my wits end as far as trying to explain to them that I think they should trust me at this point to make my own decisions. I have tried to find other people to come on the trip with us so it wouldnt be so much of a "romantic getaway" ,as they call it, but it's not looking like others have the money to go. I don't want to disrespect my parents but I don't want to miss out on my own life experiences either. I would just like to know what some other moms think to get some perspective on the subject and honest feedback. please help!!!

holley79 replied: To be totally honest you are 22 years old. You are an adult and you have to make the decision for yourself.

paradisemommy replied: ita with holley79 - 22 makes you an adult and i think you can kindly tell your parents.."i love you guys and respect your opinions but i am an adult and i think you should trust me about my decisions. i am going on this cruise because i think it's a wonderful opportunity for me to get out" if you are as close to your parents as you say then they should respect your decison to go and support you smile.gif

mckayleesmom replied:
Ditto.....Unless they are pulling the "my house, my rules thing"

luvbug00 replied: Ditto to the above and If you were mine ( which would be odd concidering I'm like 2 years older then you wink.gif ) . Weither your choise is religous or personal to not have sex yet, you should be commended to stick to your convitions for the two years that you have been dating.

Boo&BugsMom replied: Well, I agree, you are 22, that is beyond 18, and you need to make your own decisions. However, as for parents, they always try to look out of for us in the best ways possible. I was usually a good girl too, and always thought I'd be able to make the best decisions for me, but that wasn't always the case. There are many times I look back now and wish I would have listened to my parents, even at 22! Also, never say never. It's easy to say you wouldn't, but it's not that simple when you have two people together, alone, etc. etc. etc. You have to make your own decision as an adult, BUT, keep in mind, parents do know what is best for you, even if we don't always agree. They always mean well. If you do go...have fun (not in that way of course wink.gif )!!!

C&K*s Mommie replied: dito.gif to everyone above!

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Ditto! Way to go!

A&A'smommy replied: ITA you are 22 (2years older than I am) and you should be able to make your own decisions!!

toady_buckshot_noodle replied: YOU ARE AN ADULT, YOU HAVE TO MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS.

GOOD LUCK

CantWait replied: ITA with everyone. Good luck.

PrairieMom replied: If you are 22 and haven't had sex yet, esp with a guy you have been in a relationship with for 2 years, a crusie isn't going to make you do it. thumb.gif Way to go!

You are 22. Thats old enough to make your own decisions.

ashley219 replied: THanks everyone for all the feedback. I really appreciate it. Please keep posting...this has given me a lot to think about... wacko.gif

3xsthefun replied: I agree with everyone else, you are 22 and a adult, so you are old enough make your own decisions. Good luck with whatever you decide.

redchief replied: Go on the trip. Your parents are no longer qualified to be the protectors of your innocence or your moral integrity. They can continue to be a moral compass, but how you read that compass is up to you, not them. We always want to protect our kids. I have adult children too, and believe me, it's not easy letting them go, but we're doing that. We're finished raising them. It's time for you to start becoming who you are going to be as an adult. Speak with your parents, but make your own decisions. Make good ones. smile.gif Good luck.

ProudMother4857 replied: dito.gif to everythign above. You should definetley take your parents opions in consideration, but make a decision that you won't regret later in life. GOOD LUCK!!

gr33n3y3z replied:
I agree smile.gif

ZandersMama replied: you are a grown up, a little old to have your parents make decisions for you. I am only a year older, and my parents would not dare tell me I couldnt do something. They give their opinions but in the end its always my decision.

YuMe-n-GavMakes3 replied: If it was me... rolleyes.gif

I'd tell my parents .......okay I'll not go on the trip, We'll just use that 4 days to elope to Vegas and get hitched at a cheap Marriage drive thrugh place thumb.gif love2.gif

Seriously,
Its great that you have such a good relationship with your parents that at 22 you still honor their opinions like this. However it needs to be a two way street!
Try sitting down with them and asking why the sudden lack of faith in you after 22 yrs?

Talk it out And make them see your maturity is outweighing theirs right now, no sense messing up a good family relationship over something so small.
