what would you do?

boyohboyohboy wrote: What would you do if you went to pick up your child at the bus stop and when the driver pulled up he was chatting on a cell phone?

boyohboyohboy replied: am I guessing that no one thinks this is a concern?

Boys r us replied: I would call the bus garage and report the bus driver. I think that a bus driver has entirely too much responsibility on their shoulders to even consider talking on a cell phone and I would dare say that there are probably rules in their contract that prohibit cell phone usage while driving the school bus!

momofone replied: in my state it's against the law.

boyohboyohboy replied:
i wonder if it is here too?

Calimama replied: I'd report him!

momofone replied: Here its anyone on a cell phone while driving it is enforced with a ticket.

mckayleesmom replied: yikes...I would report Mr. Technology pronto.

Calimama replied:

gr33n3y3z replied: reguardless if its against the law or not its not safe
Report them

Brendan's_Mommy replied: I do believe it is against the law in many states for bus drivers to be on cell phones...but regardless it's unsafe and I would report him!!!

boyohboyohboy replied: ok so that is what we found when we went to get our son from the bus today. so i got home and called the school and asked who to talk to about the bus...and was given a number...well this man answers and it sounds like he is on his CELL PHONE! so i start with my story of what we saw, and the man i am speaking to is driving my sons bus! he is also the owner of the bus service!
so i told him that i felt he was being very unsafe, and he said well it was the school he was talking to. and i said well cant you pull over to talk to them or call them back?
it was very ackward, but now i am thinking we should just drive him to school...

so what would u do in this case? who do i talk to now? this was the owner of the bus...the man who trains the other drivers....

AlexsPajamaMama replied: I would report it! That is soo unsafe!

MommytoKKC replied: Wow, that's ridiculous. I already drive my girls to school because I have never been comfortable with a stranger with a bus load of children driving. My husband is military and it's already a law on base that you can not drive with a cell phone unless it is hands-free. Maybe the bus driver should invest in that option, if he has to have one.

mom21kid2dogs replied: I know all our buses are equipped with CB's for the drivers to communicate with other drivers, the busing superintendent, etc. I suppose some districts might use cell phones in lieu of this, possibly. Here we're too rural for that, though.

Is this an independent bus company contracted by your district or is the busing run by the district? Either way, you have both a school board and a superintendent. I'd go there.

I observed a bus dropping off a student without activating the flashers. I emailed both the busing superintendent and the school superintendent about exactaly what I saw. I got an immediate response that was professional and concerned. Of course, I did let them know if I saw it happen ever again, I would address my concerns in a letter to the editor and bypass them. cool.gif I've never seen it again. I think putting your concerns in writing is a very good idea. Way more traceable than a phone call they might "forget" ever happened. Good luck.

lovemy2 replied: I agree - report him and do it in writing mad.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I agree. I'd have no problem saying something to the bus driver, myself. That could be because we know the bus drivers and some of them we knew from when we were in school. happy.gif

luvmykids replied: Is this the same bus driver who started through the intersection while kids were still crossing (or something along those lines, sorry I don't remember it all)

At this point I think I'd rather just drive them myself wink.gif

punkeemunkee'smom replied: I would drive them myself! We have too many instances of bus drivers being aggressive drivers or not paying attention because they are the 'bigger vehicle' on the road. When it is your child's safety in the equation I don't think you can be too careful-especially if his response to you was "I was talking to the school" wacko.gif

boyohboyohboy replied:
this is that bus drivers boss!
when i called the school to get a phone number for someone to talk about the cell, i was told the man driving was filling in for the woman who wouldnt pull into the intersection and left the kids unattended boss...
and i talked to him about his use of cell phone.
we agreed that we have talked to him now, and will watch him..if i find one more thing i am going to the superintendent. i want to drive him myself. my dh and caleb want him to ride the bus...
i am not in the winning majority.
