routine dr visits - percentiles??
boyohboyohboy wrote: I have taken my son in for his 6 month appt. The Dr said he is in the 75% for his weight, what does that mean? Is he bigger then 75% of the kids his age or is he smaller??? That has always confused me....
C&K*s Mommie replied: I believe... usually with that preface I am wrong, that 25% of children his age are bigger than he is. Kinda like the SAT's, you are in a certain percentile of the range compared to other takers of the same standardized test.
You can take it that he is slightly above average for kids his own age, or you can read it as he is not at the top of his weight/height for his age. Either way he is normal.
ETA: bigger, but normal still.
Christian was always above average for her height/weight but they cancelled each other-- so she was normal
Kellie, OTOH, is below average in h/w, so they cancel each other and she is normal.

coasterqueen replied: Amy, I know you've sent those charts to me before and then and now I keep getting errors when opening them. Anyone else having that problem or is it just my computer?
C&K*s Mommie replied: Karen, I can see it. If you would like I can copy the pages that pertain to you. They are broken down by ages, so not all would pertain to you and your girls.
amynicole21 replied: Let me see if I can attach the file - this is the simplified chart for girls age 0-5. You have to convert to pounds from kilograms, and can use this site for that: Conversion
amynicole21 replied: And here is for boys age 0-5. I tried to download the actual chart, but it was too big so you'll have to use the table.
coasterqueen replied: Ok the boys chart comes up but the girls does not. It brings me to an error screen on PC.
amynicole21 replied: Try now - I think I fixed it.
coasterqueen replied: Thanks Amy! That worked.
Cece00 replied: Think about it this way: If there were 100 kids in a room his age, he would be approx # 75. So he's be bigger than about 74 other kids and smaller than the rest. In other words, he is bigger than about 74-75% of children his age.
