need techie help..

kimberley wrote: my puter keeps shutting down for no reason. the red "busy" light is still on, so the power is still going through but windows itself shuts down. my on and restart buttons on the pc will not fix anything. i have to basically pull the plug and turn it back on. i am running XP professional. often when i check the PF usage, it is way above normal (300+) and i am only running the board and msn messenger. it happens about 10-12 times per day. wacko.gif banghead.gif breakcomp.gif

so this kind of explains my lack of posts sometimes. i have written out many well thought out replies and have the darn thing crash and am too irritated to type again blush.gif tongue.gif

kit_kats_mom replied: sounds like a virus to me sad.gif

A&A'smommy replied:
me too!

If you have norton or something run that and see if it will get it off for you!!

coasterqueen replied:
I agree. Could have come from something as easy as SPAM, pop-ups, etc. sad.gif

Kaitlin'smom replied: I was going to say either debug or run the virus softwear.

kimberley replied: i have scanned for viruses and it says there are none. i have a pop up blocker and don't open anything if it is not familiar to me. weird. thanks anyway.

booey2 replied: Hi, have you tried running adware or spybot. Sometimes cookies left behind can cause this to happen.

kimberley replied: no i haven't but do clear my cookies and temp files regularly. will have to try that later smile.gif thanks.

booey2 replied: I am not sure clearing them will remove all of them, I have found stuff I thought I had gotten rid of before, after running the scans. hth rolleyes.gif

redchief replied: I don't think you have a virus. I do think you've got a critical system file that has gone corrupt. Have you enabled System Restore, and if so, do you have a recent restore point available?

This could also be caused by a corrupt or improper device driver. Have you added new hardware lately? (like a mouse or keyboard, sound card, etc.)

kimberley replied: no new hardware or software. i believe my techie friend did a system restore and couldn't find anything wrong. he is probably going to wipe out the computer and reload window etc for me when he has time. was just hoping i could find a miracle in the meantime to keep me tied down lol.

redchief replied: Awww, man, Kimberley! I'm sorry. Sounds like a reinstall of Windows would be best to me too, though. sad.gif
