J-rod replied: especially makes me mad...that

1. she was IN the office at 4:30

2. the ONLY called the house number

3. they have at least 6 numbers on file to contact us at.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Poor planning on doc's office staff. But if it's any consolation, Steph's blood work was probably just an initial screen. If anything seemed a bit off, the doctor will likely order a more intensive study. I work in a lab, I see these all the time. Try not to freak out too much, so long as the baby is moving and kicking and growing like you said, there isn't much harm in waiting a few extra days for blood results. However, when you call on Monday, do ask why they didn't try an alternative number. And if you have any questions about her results, ask.

J-rod replied: what all would be found in a glucose test? steph is afraid she may have anemia or sugar.

although i thought anemia is when your blood doesnt clot...but she doesnt have that problem.

1lilpeanut2love replied: the glucose test is testing for diabetes. i had a raised glucose result while i was pregant, i had to go back drink some other liquid stuff and got pricked 4 times for blood. You can sometimes get pregnancy induced diabetes. Don't worry. There is nothing to worry about. I did too. Come to find out I didn't even have the diabetes while pregnant. Good luck!! hug.gif

1lilpeanut2love replied: What is gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body isn't able to use the sugar (glucose) in your blood as well as it should, so the level of sugar in your blood becomes higher than normal.

Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women. It usually begins in the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy (between the 24th and 28th weeks). Most often, gestational diabetes goes away after the baby is born.

How can gestational diabetes affect me and my baby?
High sugar levels in your blood can be unhealthy for both you and your baby. If the diabetes isn't treated, your baby may be more likely to have problems at birth. For example, your baby may have a low blood sugar level or jaundice, or your baby may weigh much more than is normal. Gestational diabetes can also affect your health. For instance, if your baby is very large, you may have a more difficult delivery or need a cesarean section.

What can I do if I have gestational diabetes?
You will need to follow a diet suggested by your doctor, exercise regularly and have blood tests to check your blood sugar level. You may also need to take medicine to control your blood sugar level.

What changes should I make in my diet?
Your doctor may ask you to change some of the foods you eat. You may be asked to see a registered dietitian to help you plan your meals. You should avoid eating foods that contain a lot of simple sugar, such as cake, cookies, candy or ice cream. Instead, eat foods that contain natural sugars, like fruits.

If you get hungry between meals, eat foods that are healthy for you, such as raisins, carrot sticks, or a piece of fruit. Whole grain pasta, breads, rice and fruit are good for both you and your baby.

It's also important to eat well-balanced meals. You may need to eat less at each meal, depending on how much weight you gain during your pregnancy. Your doctor or dietitian will talk to you about this.

Why is exercise important?
Your doctor will suggest that you exercise regularly at a level that is safe for you and the baby. Exercise will help keep your blood sugar level normal, and it can also make you feel better. Walking is usually the easiest type of exercise when you are pregnant, but swimming or other exercises you enjoy work just as well. Ask your doctor to recommend some activities that would be safe for you.

If you're not used to exercising, begin by exercising for 5 or 10 minutes every day. As you get stronger, you can increase your exercise time to 30 minutes or more per session. The longer you exercise and the more often you exercise, the better the control of your blood sugar will be.

You do need to be careful about how you exercise. Don't exercise too hard or get too hot while you are exercising. Ask your doctor what would be safe for you. Depending on your age, your pulse shouldn't go higher than 140 to 160 beats per minute during exercise. If you become dizzy, or have back pain or other pain while exercising, stop exercising immediately, and call your doctor. If you have uterine contractions (labor pains, like stomach cramps) or vaginal bleeding, or your water breaks, call your doctor right away.

What tests will I need to have during my pregnancy?
Your doctor will ask you to have regular blood tests to check your blood sugar level. These tests will let your doctor know if your diet and exercise are keeping your blood sugar level normal. A normal blood sugar level is less than 105 mg per dL when you haven't eaten for a number of hours before the test (fasting) and less than 120 mg per dL 2 hours after a meal. If your blood sugar level is regularly higher than these levels, your doctor may ask you to begin taking a medicine called insulin to help lower it.

You may be asked to see a specialist if you have to start taking insulin.

What happens after my baby is born?
You may not need to have blood tests to check your blood sugar while you're in the hospital after your baby is born. However, it may be several weeks after your baby's birth before your gestational diabetes goes away. To make sure it has gone away, your doctor will ask you to have a special blood test one or two months after you have your baby.

Even if the gestational diabetes goes away after the baby's birth, it makes you have a higher risk for diabetes in your next pregnancy and later in life. That is why it is important that you continue to exercise, watch your weight and eat a healthy diet. If you do these things, you may not get diabetes when you're older.

I found this at familydoctor dot org!!! HTH

Tell her NOT to worry!!

MyBrownEyedBoy replied:
A glucose test would be testing for gestational diabetes. Having an abnormal initial screen does NOT mean she has gestational diabetes. The doctor will run further tests to determine that. If she does have it, most of the time it can be controlled by diet changes.
Anemia is actually a low red blood cell count. It is fairly common in pregnancy to be slightly anemic.

Ashlynn's Mommy replied: That happened to me when I was pregnant. But they called me 2 days after my glucose testing. They told me that I had gestational diabetes. They sent me to a dietician, and put me on a special diet so that the baby didn't get any bigger. (gb if untreated causes the baby to gain weight at a fast pace). They gave me a glucose meter to check my blood sugar level 3 times a day. I followed everything but the baby still continued to grow. I delivered her at 36 weeks, by c section. She was 10lbs 4oz. But she was healthy. I hope everything works out for you guys.

AlexsPajamaMama replied: How frustrating!
I'm sure everthing will be alright.
P&PTs for you guys! hug.gif

Bee_Kay replied: If her glucose test results are a bit off.... then generally the dr has the woman follow a stricter diet, exercise and maybe consult with a dietician. In more serious cases sometimes insulin is required.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. The test results could have been affected by what Steph ate that day. So, I am sure they just want to test her again, or have her to daily at home tests and return the results.

Good luck and try to not worry hug.gif

C&K*s Mommie replied: ITA with Kelly, Jocelyn & Barb-- there are tests that con give more conclusive results. Nothing to really be alarmed at until they give you those results from further testing.

Sorry that your weekend has a damper put on it, but call first thing Monday am to put your mind at ease. hug.gif hug.gif

redchief replied: I hope your apprehension is eased quickly. I think if it were anything serious, they office would have made sure they got hold of you. I know how you feel though, I hate when drs' offices do stuff like that.

CantWait replied: Did they draw blood? It's been awhile. It's quite possible that her Iron levels are either border line or slightly low. Mine was border line and it was just a matter of taking suppliments. I'm sure it's nothing big. hug.gif

J-rod replied:
exactly what i told her smile.gif

yes they drew her blood. thing about is she hates needles...i have to go with her all the time to ensure she doesnt pass out. so im hoping they dont make us go for the 3 hr tests sad.gif

1lilpeanut2love replied: I had to go through the 3 hour test. It's no fun, but you don't mind the pain because you want to make sure the baby is healthy. They drew my blood 4 freaking times. It hurt but I knew it was better to be safe then sorry..

Keep your head up. The baby is fine. Good luck!!

Mommy2Isabella replied: I just recently took my glucose test! They said they would call if anything came back it normally takes a a week or so. I never got a call, but the dr. told me the test is very easy to be tipped off, and if something comes back then they will send you for another test that is longer. Like other people have said, if it was something SERIOUS they would have found a way to get ahold of you guys. So try not to worry too much.

mummy2girls replied: my Sil had an asbnormal gluclose test. She had to go back and do another test and then it came back as her having gestational diabetes.. the baby was born healthy 4 months later:)

My ex's sister had an abnormal glucose test result. She had to do another test and it showed she was fine and she didnt have gestational diabetes. So wither way im sure your baby wioll be fine:) She will just have to go on a diabetes test if it comes back pos.

Another thing.... I had that glucose test as well and a pee test as well. I was called as something wrong with the test results. I went in and it showed i had a bladder infection... Which shocked me because i had no pian or symptoms of a bladder infection...
