mattress advice

kimberley wrote: so our crappy, cheap bed is really becoming a problem with creaks, poky coils and being on a roller coaster whenever the other moves so i want to invest in a good mattress/boxspring set and am not sure what to look for or where to start my search. all advice welcome!

tia!

boyohboyohboy replied: I think I have been trying to find the right mattress for 35 yrs! Its really hard to do.
good luck.

A&A'smommy replied: UMMM we have a select comfort and its fabulous!!! LOVE It!!! You can buy them refurbished and they are cheaper.

bluebear replied: A big role in selecting a good comfortable bed depends on the mattress pad. Trust me, my parents got a new feather top mattress about 2 years ago, it cost about $40,000 (I kid you not) and a mattress pad that vwas $90. The bed felt awful because the mattress pad was plastic lined (like if you wet the bed) and my mom didn't know it until she opened the package. Well last year they got a new mattress pad and the bed is so comfortable now!

Nina J replied: When we got our new bed, I honestly just went and tried all the beds. I spent a whole afternoon going to a few different stores and laying on the beds. Then I narrowed it down to which ones I thought were good and I layed on them for longer rolling_smile.gif

In the end, the one I liked the most was only $600. I have no idea what brand it is, I'd have to take all the sheets off to see.

I also think a big thing in making a bed comfortable is the actual bedding. We have a good quality woolen underlay. When I wash it and hang it out to dry, I have to leave it out overnight sometimes so all the wool dries. You really notice what a difference it makes to your bed when it's not there. And the blankets and things, you could have the nicest mattress in the world but if you pair it with bad sheets, pillows and blankets, I don't think you're going to sleep well.

kimberley replied: hmm much cheaper than i thought. is a pillow top important? should i stick to specialty mattress stores or is sears, walmart or costco okay too?

bluebear replied: Last year I got a new bed. My parents wanted me to get one from Costco. I didn't want it because it felt so awful...even though it wasn't firm.

You can get a pillowtop mattress pad, that makes it feel better

cameragirl21 replied: I have a Sealy Posturpedic and I think it's awesome and anyone else who sleeps on my bed always comments on how comfortable it is too.

momofone replied: tempur-pedic beds are soft
idk if you have a bob's discount furniture by you but they have bobopedic beds that are super soft.

coasterqueen replied: The Sleep Number bed and LOVE it! thumb.gif

PrairieMom replied:
We have one too. A "Night Star" to be exact. laugh.gif It is a pillow top, I love it. We have had it for about 10 years now, and it is still working for us. I would stay away from the big box stores and go for in the very least a furniture store. I have never set foot in a mattress store, but it may be worth checking out, maybe they can point you in the right direction.

PrairieMom replied:
40,000?! are you sure not 4,000?? that is insane. absolutely insane. You can literally buy a house in my town for that. Even 4000 is insane. ohmy.gif

moped replied: We have a deep queen pillow top, love it! Was about $2500.00, which really wasn't too bad. You ahve to really test them out and be prepared that at first you won't love it. I found I was a bit disappointed at fisrt, but after a couple of weeks it truly is the THE best bed ever!!!!!!!!

moped replied:
Hey cool, you are the only people I know that have a sleep number! Tell us more!

coasterqueen replied:
Not much too it, really. It has a hard plastic base for the bed, a QUIET machine that sits under my bed blows air into the mattress chambers - one for my side, one for DH's. There is a remote control that we can adjust our "sleep number" on for each side. That number is how firm/soft, etc you want it to be. So it's not a one size fits all type of mattress that regular mattresses claim to be. This mattress is tailored to the individual.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: we have a sleep number bed too. It is the best EVER!!!

My3LilMonkeys replied: I would caution on the Sleep Number beds - make sure you get the kind that has the 2 separate chambers. When we were on vacation the hotel had a sleep number bed but with only one chamber and since DH is heavier than I am it had an 'underinflated air mattress' kind of effect - when he laid down, I went up!

The last night we were there he slept on the other bed and I had one to myself and I really liked it then. thumb.gif

bluebear replied:
lmfao. I just asked my mom how much she paid and it was $16,000 not $40,000. She's continuing to yell at me for not having any concept of money

The bob-o-pedic beds are awful. They're like laying on a giant dry sponge.

luvbug00 replied: i have two words for you.
memory foam..lol
Jon has this stuff and every time i sleep over i have to get dragged out of bed. emlaugh.gif

coasterqueen replied:
I didn't know they had one chamber beds.
