how old were your kids - when you stopped using lotion?

Celestrina wrote: We tend to baby Ben, and I was wondering when you stopped using lotion on your little ones?

moped replied: Honestly I don't think I will stop, because it is important to keep moisturized, otherwise your skin ages.....so I used lotion on Jack everyday, not baby lotion, but Dove Sensitive or something.....he love rubbing it in his legs and then doing daddys legs too

coasterqueen replied: Never have used lotion on my girls. PED tells me their skin is designed to lotion itself and they have the smoothest skin ever. My understanding is the more lotion you feed the skin the more it needs it, hence way too much lotion/way too much chemicals in their system. The only time I think it's needed is in cases of eczema, etc.

C&K*s Mommie replied: I do not/did not regularily use lotion on the kids- occasionally I did for the smell. They get into some of mine alot and I allow them to put some on then.

AlexsPajamaMama replied:
Thats what I thought too

I haven't used lotion on a regular basis, for Alex or myself

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I won't ever stop! We live in Colorado, so you can understand how dry it is here. I use Walmart's version of Cetaphil lotion on Wil. It doesn't have any perfumes in it. I use it on myself too. I'm a mess (super itchy) if I don't lotion up after a shower, so I don't want my kids to go through that too.

redchief replied: This is a fairly new practice. No one who had children in ours' peer group used lotion on their children with the exception of sunblock for UV protection when outdoors. As I sit here thinking about it I realize I'm not a big fan using moisturizing lotions on a daily basis. Our dermis is a complex organ with the ability to moistuize and heal itself in the course of daily life (with the exception of UV damage of course). I don't think I would use lotion if we were starting over having children.

coasterqueen replied:
ITA, this is what my PED was telling me.

coasterqueen replied:
Have you tried getting a whole house humidifier? Or whatever those things are so there is more moisture in the air? That would help out with your climate situation.

I know our house gets too much humidity and DH installed a whole house dehumidifier on our furnace when we built it to help with that problem. Then we have temperature gages throughout the house to help us figure out how we need to stabilize it from time to time.

C&K*s Mommie replied: As an African-American woman, I can tell you that lotioning up during the dry months in a must, otherwise you will be subject to much ridicule or embarrassment for having obviously dry elbows and knees, etc. But any other time of the year, it is merely for the smell of it. Same with the kids.

moped replied:
We have very much the same climate Rae, I would die without lotion

boyohboyohboy replied: I still put lotion on my oldest son, mostly only on bath days, but mainly just to spend some extra time with him, pamper him, he sees us do so much with the baby, and lotion the baby, so I think he enjoys it..He calls it his spa treatment, and asks to have his feet rubbed too!
DADDY JUST LOVES THAT! NOT!

mom21kid2dogs replied: We still use lotion on Olivia after every bath. (She only bathes 3-4x a week, though) I have always used it after bathing since my childhood so she likes it 'cause Mommy does it. I have much better skin than most all my same aged peers so I'm a firm believer in daily moisturizing!!

Kaitlin'smom replied: never really used it. She will occasionaly use my lotion, she love to put lotion on me if she feels a ruff spot laugh.gif

holley79 replied: My mom used lotion on me till I could put it on myself and I will probably do the same with Annika.

jaytrevjax replied: My husband has excema, and all 3 of the boys has some degree of it, especially during the change of the hot and cold seasons, so I just keep and eye on them and if they need it, I put it on them. Other than that, I don't really use it.

CantWait replied: I only use it when needed. Either when Anthony is itchy or if I notice that he's a little dry.

Robbie has excema so I tend not to put to much of anything on his skin unless he has a flair up.

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Tanner's eczema (sp?) gets pretty bad during the winter. He will usually get one bad break out every winter WITH putting on cream every night and every morning, so I would hate to see his skin if I never put it on. He is 4. I don't really apply it much during the summer. His skin stays ok then. If he asks I will apply it, but in the winter it is necessity! I use the Equate version of Eucerin cream. he also has a special Eczema creame that was perscribed by the doctor, but I don't want to use that too much because it's a steriod cream. I only use it if he has a breakout that can not be controlled by the cream.

MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I very rarely put lotion on the kids. And only use lotion on myself when I am particularly dry. I know it's time to start when Katy gets bumps on her upper arms and Matt will get them on his upper legs and then I remember to put lotion on them for a week or so and stop. FOr my it's when I look at my legs and notice they are about to completely falke away biggrin.gif

My3LilMonkeys replied: Only when their skin is dry or they get itchy. I was never much of a regular lotion user on them.

Brias3 replied: I still use some sort of moisturizer on all of them. I love the softestness that baby lotion gives so not only do I use that on myself sometimes before bed, I'll still put it on the kids too, especially Mason who has drier skin.

Plus most baby lotions (and a lot of other lotions) contain mineral oil, which really isnt' good for your skin or pores.

kristy-n-chad replied: Noah is a few months over two and I stil use it on him. With the amount of lotion I have been given between Noah and Abram, they'll be off to college still wearing baby lotion! emlaugh.gif
