cheerios

beckamouse wrote: when is it ok to give a baby cheerios? My dad was over and saw maggie sitting in her high chair and decided to put some on the highchair and i took then off because i didnt know if it was ok for them to be there.

she's 6 months old. no teeth. i dunno if they're safe for her at the moment.

Hillbilly Housewife replied: lol.... (JMO!!!!) if they can sit up, they can eat cheerios! lol!!!

Especially if they are DROOLINg.... the droll mushes them right up. Try it. It takes about 4 seconds. emlaugh.gif

AND - the reasone for the "o" shape - they're choke free. Even if they get caught, they're a hole in the middle to breathe from. (yeah, it can happen they gag on it or something.... but assuming they are one at a time, it should be fine.)

Just like the LifeSavers candy - ever wonder why they're called LifeSavers? It's because even if you swallow it accidentaly, you can never really "choke", since there's a hole in the middle for air to get through....

mammag replied: I googled it and it just said when they get the pincher grip (around 9-10mos). It's probably fine if she is able to pick them up and put them in her mouth.

mummy2girls replied: i ghave them to jenna at 7 months approx.. Just keep a close eye...so they diont stuff!

3_call_me_mama replied: Kathleen has been eating them for about 6 weeks, so around 6 month. She doesn't care for them though---- but LOVES Kix, and since she has a few teeth she chomps them right up.

JAYMESMOM replied: I gave Jayme cherrios around 6 months. They mush real easy with their drool and gums. Just make sure she is in her highcair and is being watched.

kimberley replied: Jade was about 10mos but had really no interest in food until then. i agree, just watch her closely if you do give them to her and make sure she doesn't jam 10 in her mouth at once wacko.gif .

ediep replied: I think Jason was about 6 months old when I gave him cheerios. You could break them in half if you feel more comfortable. Babies don't need teeth for cheerios, their gums are hard enough and the cheerios get really mushy fast

iluvmysweetiepies replied: I started giving them to my girls around 6-7 months. thumb.gif They loved them(and still do)!!

3xmommy replied: She should be just fine. I gave all of mine Cheerios once they were able to swallow without smooshing half of their food out with their tongues. laugh.gif They do mush up fast with spit and let's face it, babies have a ton more than we do. My son would just waller them up with slobber and swallow, he didn't wanna take time to chew! LOL!

Just keep an eye on her though. You don't wanna leave one alone with ANYTHING... it is amazing what babies can get hurt with!

Gammy2 replied: My granddaughter is 13 months and we just started giving her cheerios, i was always afraid she would choke. We have been giving her puffed snacks for awhile and they are available in the baby food section at the grocery store. The don't have to chew them they dissolve to mush, i think we started them at about 9-10 months old. They are available in strawberry, banana, and sweet potato flavor - they are pretty good too because i tried them.LOL But i never thought about the "O" shape of cheerios and not choking or i probably would have gave them sooner. But as everyone else said just make sure she doesn't put too many in her mouth. I'm a very paranoid person when it comes to choking so i don't know if i would give them at 6 months, jmo.

gr33n3y3z replied: I used to snap them in half or 3rd's

Hillbilly Housewife replied:
It can also help her develop the pincher grip... fine motor skills... lol if she REALLY wants them, she'll grab them!

Mommy2BAK replied:
Blakely actually started the pincher grip around 7 months, but I had never even considered cheerios until I took her into the childcare at the fitness center where I work out and all the other kids were eating them so I figured I needed to let her try it at home first. This was when she was about 8 months old, she didn't have any teeth yet but she was teething, so gumming those were good for her, and she got teeth like 2 weeks later! wacko.gif
