boot legged movies - PLEASE NO ARGUING
A&A'smommy wrote: Okay my opinion is that its wrong it feels wrong to me and I just can't agree with it.. I kinda had a conversation with one of my friends online tonight her husband is in iraq and can get boot legged movie its not illegal over there well we got into the conversation about it and basicly I told her that I didn't agree with it (she kinda mad at me ) anyway I do d/l music not much but I do and I have.. I also don't like it because I like to buy them I like collecting the "real" thing. So whats your opinion without arguing with people
kimberley replied: i am not a big movie person so i am probably the wrong one to ask, but i wouldn't rip one of the net. i have d/l music from Kazaa in the past but if it is something i truly like, i go out and buy the actual cd to support the artist. for me, kazaa was like "sampling the goods". a lot of times i have paid $25 for a CD and hated all but 1 or 2 songs. now, i can hear the album, then decide if i want to buy it. no different than listening to the radio in my own time, kwim?
MyBlueEyedBabies replied: I think dowloading music and movies would be the same thing. Your are in essence stealing either way. I don' really care if I have "the real thing" I don't keep DVD cases anyway so it's not like anything is on display for others to see.
coasterqueen replied: I'm just curious if you are not for boot legging movies and music what about computer software?
I've never boot legged a movie or music before, never a need to. BUT being that said Dh did try to copy a certain movie we rented the other night and it didn't work.
CantWait replied: I dl music from the net... Ron who has been overseas 4 times now always brings bootlegged music and movies back, so I'm not totally against it.
CAMSMOM1 replied: My Step Father is a bootlegger to the extreme! It's his hobby! He has over 2,000 boot legged movies.
What I mean by that is, he will go rent 20 movies from Blockbuster, and he has a DVD burner, and copies them. So he is still "renting" the movie, but is making one for his collection. He has EVERY new release. I think what he is doing isn't right. If you want to copy a movie every now and then, no biggie. But to take it to such an extreme, is not right. IMO.
But I have to admit, my Mom has made some copies of Disney movies, but most of which she owned...and it wasn't boot legged.
In moderation, I don't see it as wrong. But what my step dad is doing, isn't good. It's a tough question. I just know, that I don't do it.
gr33n3y3z replied: I like the real movie also Boot legged movies are usually crappy copies any way
C&K*s Mommie replied: I do not agree with going to the theater and videotaping the movie at the theater. But there was an operation of bootlegged movies here in town, before they were busted last yr at our flea market. I know that the business was booming with customers. We would walk past, and look but we would not buy. We were more curious about it, thinking 'how in the world did they get this movie it just came out?' A couple friend of our had a relative that made his living selling videotaped bootlegs.
To d/l music off the net, I think is okay. I do it. To burn purchased dvds for your personal collection, without making a profit, I think is okay too. But it crosses a line when it is for a profit. IMO.
salmndr007 replied: This is a very interesting convo. I was doing some research and it isn't against the law to make copies of movies and cd's as long as they are for your own collection and not for distribution. One of my friends back in Tenn did the same things that CAMSMOM's step father does. Actually, I was talking to some of the people at blockbuster a couple of months ago and they actually recommend doing that to the store employees. I find that interesting.
luvmykids replied: I'd personally rather buy it and support the people who made it but if someone gave me a bootlegged copy I don't think it would bother me too much since I'm not the one who did it.
jcc64 replied: I do think d/l music and videos is exactly the same thing- so if you're philosophically opposed to one and not the other, that seems sort of inconsistent to me. We've had this conversation here many times. I pre-date the digital era- and back when I was a music collecting teen-ager, no one thought twice about recording a friend's album onto a blank cassette tape. The same thing goes for recording shows on t.v. The industry didn't question it, no one was making money off of it- people just passed music around and it was how fans were made, y'know. I fail to see how what's happening now on the net is any different. If you d/l some music, really like it, then you will go out and buy the higher quality 1st generation recording and support the artist (although that's essentially a joke- most of the $$$ goes to the businessmen. I'm obviously not suggesting that someone should profit off of others' intellectual property. But for personal consumption- I see nothing wrong with that.
My3LilMonkeys replied: Well we rent movies and burn copies - or borrow from friends and burn copies. About all I get out of it are movies that I never find time to watch.
We don't make any money off of it, although if someone wants a copy DH will ask them to either provide their own DVDR or give him $1 to cover the cost b/c they are expensive.
Most new movies have a copy protection on them so that they can't be copied. There is a program you can d/l from the internet to remove the protection - but I'm not sure how legal that aspect of it is.
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Well, I don't own any boot legged movies, but I own an Ipod and get my music from Itunes...is this the same thing?
jcc64 replied: No, Aimee- Itunes is a fee per file service- you pay 99 cents for the right to d/l a music file a maximum of 3 times, I believe. Totally legal and legitimate. We're talking about peer to peer sites, where individuals post or share files, free of charge and w/o the blessing of whomever owns the copyright. (although that is not always the case with some musicians, who actually encourage internet trading of their music).
Maddie&EthansMom replied: Oh okay. Thanks Jeanne!
mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I don't agree with it. My father makes what he calls "back up copies" of movies he already owns. SO he doesn't rent and then copy movies, he only copies what he already owns for friends. So I suppose he's already paid for it, but I still don't agree with it though. He recently sent me a bunch of Disney movies for Wil and I told him I didn't want him doing it anymore. He thinks I'm silly, but I think he's silly! It just doesn't feel right to me.
ediep replied: I am not against it, but I would rather have the higher quality version by buying it from the store
~~*Missi*~~ replied: I dont know if this is boot leg or not. My husband and mine laptops came with DVD burners and software to copy DVD's. Which I know that here is the copy right thing on them but we copy them for our viewing pleasure. Ya know So i am guessing if that is bootleg well then yeah. Selling it no i wouldn't nor would chris since well you can go to jail. But we pay for the membership at blockbuster and well most nights we don't get to watch the movies so we copy them to save for later.
So ok to watch but not to sell!! LOL
A&A'smommy replied: that is not exacly bootlegging my dh does it but I told me that I don't want him doing that for us (he copys our movies for friends)
A&A'smommy replied: Really that is really interesting I will have to tell my dh about that!!
