baby swings - to sleep or not

suzykrul wrote: My 7 week old sleeps in her swing very well....Its the craddle swing that swings back and forth. She loves it. As soon as you put her in there she goes to sleep. I know that its a bad habit to start...but she sleeps so bad in her crib. Its like she likes to be in a tighter spot. And i dont want her to get used to sleeping in a bed with us. Did anyone else have a baby that loved her swing?? Any advice or thoughts????

indywndy_04 replied: Jake loves his swing too, but you have have have to get them to sleep on their own in the crib/bassinett. As hard as it is...because they will get hooked on that swinging motion to go to sleep and when they get too big for it you will have to constantly rock them to sleep and as soon as you lay them down and they aren't rocking, they will be right back up. (I had one of those kids! smile.gif )

Try swaddeling tight like they did in the hospital. That works for Jake, makes him feel comfy and snuggled.

CantWait replied: My first loved his swing, honestly I was never able to get my kids to fall alseep in their beds, I just didn't want them to cry. It's not a horrible thing so long as your prepared for the long term side effects.

My first started sleeping fine on his own when it was time for his own bed, my yougnest on the other hand was a different story.

suzykrul replied: We do the swaddling....she fuses until shes out of it. We also just use the swing to get her to sleep....then when she is still awake....but dosing off we put her in her crib....but she wont sleep anywhere near as long as she will in her swing.

TheOaf66 replied: don't worry about the sleepin in the crib thing...we gave Aiden all of his naps and such in his swing until 5 months or so...when they are that young, you do what you have to so that they sleep

indywndy_04 replied: You guys are giving her good advice and that is true...when they are that young you really do whatever it takes. I guess I was just thinking of the long term... smile.gif My oldest son was addicted to his swing and when he outgrew it...UGH! Mama was torchered trying to get him to sleep!! smile.gif

That is good that you move her before she is all the way asleep, that is what I try to do with Jake too if he starts to fall asleep on me, of course sometimes I let him because I want to snuggle with him, but I guess I try to give him a variety so he will sleep no matter where he is. Good luck!!

Do you have a picture of her? Love to see her. smile.gif

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: At that age, don't worry about where they sleep. Wherever and whenever is my philosophy, as long as they are safe of course. My kids slept in their bouncy seat, but not really the swing.

~Roo'sMama~ replied:
We had the same experience with Andrew. I let him sleep in his swing all the time during the day - he wouldn't take naps at all in his crib because he wanted the swing. Then he'd sleep about half the night in his own bed and then wind up with us. Now at 2 years old, he's still sleeping the majority of the night in our bed. wacko.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Aiden is almost 6 months old and just started taking naps in his crib. I say do whatever works. He has always (usually) slept in his crib at night though, which has helped make the transition easier. Aiden was SUPER colicky and colicky babies love movement, so the swing was our safe haven!

ETA: Tanner took his naps in his bouncy (another colicky one), and slept there until he was about 6-7 months old. Again, slept in his crib at night though, but the naps he loved that movement as well.

Twelve Volt Man replied: Seeing how I just took my son for a ride in the car, in order to get him to sleep, I can't say anything about you using a swing. I've tried two other times today to get him to nap, but he keeps waking up as soon as I lay him down in his crib. Now, he's sleeping peacefully in his carseat in his room.

holley79 replied: Annika NEVER liked the swing. Maybe had I had a papasan swing she may have liked it better but oh well. Maybe with the next one.
