Where did this come from - panicky

HuskerMom wrote: Since late this afternoon I've had this scared panicky feeling. I don't know what caused it or why I feel this way. I'm not as bad now but earlier I almost felt sick I was so panicky. It's really scary. The only other time I felt this way was the day before I found out I was pregnant with Summer. I know I'm not pregnant so I can't figure out what's going on. Has anyone else all of a sudden gotten a feeling like that?

PrairieMom replied: yeah, all the time. Its horrible. There is usually something very small and stupid that will trigger me, like OMG! did I forget my keys! when I am driving the car. Duh! I'm driving aren't I ? Of course I have the keys! but the feeling will stay.

I don't know what causes it, I suspect mine is some how related to the seasons.

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: I think it sounds like a panic attack.

My SIL gets those. Her DR told her to think of 3 things/places that make her feel good. Identify these three things during a calm state - not during a panic attack. Then, when you get that panic feeling,,, think of one of these places to see if it helps calm you down. I've never tried it myself,,,,,,but I've heard it helps.

Hang in there.

HuskerMom replied:
Thanks I'll try that. It's so weird that it was just out of the blue like that. And I noticed that even talking about it makes it worse it seems. growl.gif

Sam & Abby's Mom replied:
Kind of sounds like panic attacks. I wonder if the fluctuating of hormones is bringing them on ? (post pregnancy hormones) I think my SIL was also told about some breathing techniques to use during a panic attack. I dont know what the techniques are, though. Maybe you could google panic attacks to see what comes up ?

I'm sure its a horrible feeling. Hang in there sister! If they get any worse,,maybe you can talk to your DR ? Even your OB should be able to help with advice/meds.

HuskerMom replied: That's a good idea, I think I will google it. I never even thought about post pregnancy hormones. I didn't have ppd as bad this time so I thought I was through the woods with hormones by now, kwim?

Dh will be home in a couple hours so at least I won't be alone then.

Sam & Abby's Mom replied: I know what you mean about being out of the woods but ,,, I know your hormones are still changing because at 6 months PP its not uncommon for some women to develop an underactive thyroid due to the dip in hormones. Of course,, I'm no doctor laugh.gif

seeingblue2 replied: I get them too sometimes..a panic or anxiety attack. And they can be triggered by the dumbest things..like just leaving the house..sigh.

ediep replied: yup, I pretty much live tht way all the time

I have Generalized anxiety disorder and I am on meds for it. But silly things can trigger an attack. Mostly mine is related to my kids getting/being sick. If jason says he has a stomachache I start with the sweats, heart racing, sick stomach......

even if I am aound a sick person, sometimes that will trigger me too....

jcc64 replied: Definitely sounds like anxiety, and many many times for us women, it is tied into hormonal fluctuations. Different things work for different people, and there are varying degrees of severity. The one you describes sounds pretty mild, though I'm sure it didn't feel that way to you at the time.
Visualization like someone else described works sometimes, though for me its effectiveness depends on just how freaked out I am. Deep, diaphramatic breathing is very effective, and I think works for just about everyone if done correctly. It's really easy: close your mouth, inhale deeply through your nose for 5 seconds, making sure that you see your abdominal area extend or protrude with your inhale. Hold it in for 5 seconds, then exhale very slowly for 5 seconds through your mouth. Do this repeatedly for a few minutes, and you should start to feel a little calmer. Alot of panic attacks come from shallow breathing done too far up in the chest cavity. I was never conscious of how I was breathing until I read up a little on anxiety. I've had an anxiety disorder for 10+ yrs now, and what distinguishes a diagnosible disorder from a few random attacks is the frequency and severity of incidents. If this starts to happen over and over, or becomes so severe that it interferes with the quality of your daily life, then it's time to see a dr. Otherwise, just do the breathing, and odds are, it'll pass and your system will settle down when your hormones do. Good luck!

Calimama replied: I hope you're feeling better today. hug.gif hug.gif

holley79 replied: OMG yes, I would also get a queasy feeling right along with it....

HuskerMom replied:
I started to feel a little panicky again today and tried slowing down my breathing like that and it really helped. Thanks for that!

Now I keep catching myself getting scared that it'll happen again. dry.gif
