When to start juice

shelbysmom wrote: I wanted to know when is it time to start giving them juice and water. Did you put in their bottle or cup only? And was it a sippy cup?

My3LilMonkeys replied: We started around 6 months. We gave it in bottle first (though many ppl give it in a cup only and that seems to work out well) then moved to a sippy cup, then a regular cup.

A&A'smommy replied: I wouldn't give her juice until at least 6months and I think I was told to give Alyssa water when she was like 3months old but I'm not sure about that so I would ask your ped about it first!!

MyLuvBugs replied: We had to start giving Lorelei some when she was 2 months old b/c she got SOOOOO constipated for likea week. We used a little pedialyte (2 oz) with 4 oz of water each day, and gradually worked up to full juice by 1 year.

luvmykids replied: Around 5 months, diluted with water and in a bottle. But I've heard that's bad for their incoming teeth, that it's better from a cup. But I did the bottle anyway. I'm a rebel.

kayla's mama replied: Juice at 6 months diluted with water out of a sippy. She refuses to drink water and out of a real cup unless it is our drink.

MomToJade&Jordan replied: I was told not to give my first water until the age of 1. I didn't give her juice until 6 months. I think I used the Gerber kind, and I gave it to her in a sippy cup. It was how we got her started on a sippy cup.

MomToMany replied: I'd wait until at least 9 months old before starting juice. And even then I'd water it down to 1/4 strength. Babies under 6 months old need nothing other than breastmilk or formula, even in the hotter climates.

Guidelines for offering juice to babies

Kaitlin'smom replied: I think around 6 months I tried but she HATED any kind of juice full strenth or watered down so she just got mommy milk and water in a sippy until about a year when she was ok with 1/2 juice 1/2 water. Even now she still perfers some juice watered down.

mysweetpeasWil&Wes replied: I started dilluted juice at maybe 10 months when he was first interested in using a sippy cup. I gave it to him once or twice earlier than that to aid in constipation too. My ped still doesn't recommend juice whatsoever, only water and milk, but I give Wil at least one sippy of dilluted juice everyday. He is 17 months.

fashionmumofboys replied: I started both boys at 7 months with the bottle first and then proceed to a sippy cup.

Myprecioushearts replied: Caden just started juice at 6months old. He's drinking very little bit, maybe about 2oz in a full day. I make him a 4oz sippy with 2-3oz water and 1-2oz of juice that I'll continue to give him with his meals all day. I feel it up that much because he doesn't get the concept of tipping it yet. I know he won't drink it all but it helps me from having to hold it so much for him. I'm breastfeeding and he does not take bottles so I really needed to introduce the sippy cup to help give me a break!!! He's still learing and doing much better with it though.

Edward's Mommy replied: I start my kiddo at 3 months when he started solids. His doctor ok'd it. At first I put it in a bottle until he was 5 months, then he got it in a sippy cup only.

Cece00 replied: I waited until my boys were close to 1. Before that it was just water every now & then, starting around 7 months.

I've always diluted any juice I give my kids- even to this day...& we usually drink water or milk.

kimberley replied: according to my ped.. never. he said it is full of sugar and calories that should be spent on other food groups. and a couple of small glasses of juice is the equivalent of 4 apples and no one eats that in one sitting. he said he'd rather see them eat an apple, some pasta and milk than fill up on juice. tho the boys did get juice at daycare at about age 2.

pinniy replied:
The same went for Trei-Trei. He was constipated, so diluted apple juice, or added to his formula, every once in a while, was only to help him get through THAT phase. After that, it was about 6 months, regularly, and watered down. He's 10M, now, and he's at 50/50 twice a day w/ juice, just to keep him hydrated. He's a "sweater," and gets thirsty all the time. His Dr. ok'd it, too.
