When to ditch the monitor?

MyBrownEyedBoy wrote: So, Logan will be 3 at the end of the summer. His room is literally right across the hall from ours and I'm a fairly light sleeper. Even with our door closed, I can still hear him if he needs me. When did you all ditch the baby monitor? And when did you move to a big kid bed?

lisar replied: With Lexi I didnt have a baby monitor her room was off of my room. (single mom) I lived with Granny. Our rooms were connected. With Raygen she is only 1 so I am still using it.

indywndy_04 replied: I ditched the monitor when they went into a toddler bed. My first went into his toddler bed at 1, my 2nd went in a little later then that because she wouldnt stay in her bed.

But - My friend has a 4 year old and a big 2 story house, so she loves using the monitor when her daughter is sick so she can listen out for her at night.

Our Lil' Family replied: Our house is only 1300 sq. feet, I've never used a monitor. I can practically hear him turning over at night.

My3LilMonkeys replied: Both my girls are in big girl beds but I still use a monitor - they are on the opposite end of the house from me and I like the security of knowing if they need me I'll hear them for sure.

MyBrownEyedBoy replied: Okay, I think I'm going to give it a try for a week and see if I can handle it. I do always hear him even if I forget to turn it up.

coasterqueen replied: We ditched it when Megan was born as we didn't want to buy another one for her. So that was at 2.5 years of age. As long as you are comfortable I think it would be just fine to do it now. I'd do it with Megan at 2.5, but she is in to everything and I don't trust her yet. tongue.gif

~Roo'sMama~ replied: We just recently stopped using a monitor in Andrew's room because we need it for Allie's. He sleeps in a toddler bed, and I've been opening the door after he falls asleep so that I can hear him better or he can come find us. He's pretty loud when he cries so I'd probably be able to hear him without the door being open, but now that its getting hot I've been putting a fan in our room at night and I'm afraid I won't hear him over it. Now that he knows the door is open he doesn't cry in the morning any more but just comes in our room. happy.gif

Calimama replied: We never used the monitor. Bella's room is right next to ours. I can hear her if she so much as coughs.

lovemy2 replied: Big kid bed came at age 3 right after we moved - just decided not to put the crib back together - but she has the gates on both sides of the bed cause its not against a wall and the monitor well she is taking it with her to college rolling_smile.gif Oh yeah and the rails on the bed will probably go too- she would fall out otherwise... emlaugh.gif And come to think of it she will probably still be in a car seat too since she is going to be 5 in less than a month and only weighs 33 pounds - her brother is almost halfway to her weight at age 5 MONTHS rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif emlaugh.gif rolling_smile.gif

Maddy'sMommy replied: I stopped using the moniter at like 9 months b/c our townhome was small I could hear her, plus her room was upstairs so i felt more secure with her there. We recently moved and her room is all the way on the other side of the house so I got the moniter out again b/c I would worry so much I was getting up 2-3 times to check on her. I also just switched her to a toddler bed , and to my surprise she is doing awesome. She is a wild child so I thought for sure she would be in and out and in to everything... but with an occasional getting out and playing with her toys, she always goes back in the bed to sleep and is even taking great naps in it. Good Luck. smile.gif

Boo&BugsMom replied:
Monitor...with Tanner, had one for 2 weeks and got fed up with it. Haven't had one since. His room was down the hall as a baby and we always heard him. The monitor made us paranoid because we'd hear every coo and fuss and made it difficult to sleep. Buh-bye monitor! For Aiden, we don't have one for the room either, but we have one that we use if we are outside and he is inside sleeping, and that's it.

Bed...Tanner was in his big boy bed right before he turned two. We'll do the same for Aiden.

lesliesmom replied: Well, I had stopped using a monitor for my older two. Even though we are upstairs and they are downstairs I would hear them calling out. That was until 5:15 this morning when both of them come up the stairs. Christopher lost his puppy and couldn't find it. I guess he was calling out but I didn't hear him (we have fans in our room and they covered up their call). Leslie woke up to help him and when she couldn't find puppy they both came upstairs to our room. So, since lindsay is down the hall from us upstairs and hasn't used the monitor for months, that one is going downstairs, even though they are 3 and 5 and can take care of themselves. I just would like to know the occassional times when they are crying or something is wrong...

moped replied: Never really used a monitor at all - he is fine! tongue.gif
