What is neoki? - And what do you do with it?

luvmykids wrote: My neighbor just brought me some home made neoki ( I'm probably spelling it wrong but thats what it sounds like) and I'm not sure what it is or how you cook it or what. I didn't want to ask and seem rude blush.gif They kind of look like dumplings?

mckayleesmom replied: blink.gif unsure.gif

luvmykids replied:
rolling_smile.gif Glad I'm not the only one. I'm trying to look it up on the internet but can't find it, probably because I don't even know how to spell it.

mckayleesmom replied: What nationality is she? Maybe you can look it up under that?

luvmykids replied: She's a white chick tongue.gif

*Shannon* replied: They are gnocchi (I think that's how it's spelled, may be gnocci). They are potato dumplings. I believe they are boiled in water or chicken stock, and possibly served with a tomato sauce.

redchief replied: Is it gnocchi?

luvmykids replied: thumb.gif Thank you, thank you!!! Now at least I know they are probably edible rolling_smile.gif

luvbug00 replied: OMG if it's those german dumplings I'm going to hunt you down and eat them! emlaugh.gif

redchief replied: I've had gnocchi... I like them with chicken (of course that's the only way I've ever had them, so my experience is limited).

luvmykids replied: Gnocchi (pronounced nee-okkee) are an excellent alternative to pasta: They're fantastic with all sorts of sauces, from a simple summer tomato sauce to the richest winter meat sauce.

Cook the gnocchi in abundant salted boiling water, removing them with a slotted spoon a minute or two after they rise to the surface. Drain them well and serve them with a few leaves of sage, melted unsalted butter and Parmigiano, or meat sauce, or pomarola, or pesto.

Well, I guess you really do learn something new every day! thumb.gif

Apparantly, they are considered an Italian dish but get their name from the German word for knot. They're served with everything from marinara to heavy meat type sauces to lighter stuff like simple spices. Now I just have to figure out what to have with them, sounds like they're too good to put a jar of Ragu on. cool.gif

luvbug00 replied: ohh so they are like german spetzler. which are made exactly the same way. Ohh yummy! tongue.gif

Brias3 replied: Yep, its gnocchi. They're a cross between a dumpling and a pasta in my opinion. I've never prepared them myself before but I'd guess you can probably boil them. I like to eat them with a marinara sauce or with broccoli and garlic butter sauce.

luvmykids replied: I boiled them with some salt and garlic, then just put diced tomatos, basil and some mozerella on top. They were yummy but the kids didn't like them, they pretended they were eating eyeballs wacko.gif
